Title: Fuel cut off valve?
Post by dreamweaver on 04/19/06 at 20:59:32

I have an 87 650..is there a fuel cut off valve. And how normal is it to have a different key for gas tank, ignition and helmet lock..
BTW..still can't find one to fit fork lock..

Not normal, same key should work all  three.

Fork lock key is different as it is single sided teeth, rather than double sided like the others, On my 96 all others are the same, except the helmet lock and it was changed due to a malfunction of some kind by the original owner. Max

Yup, fork lock is separate while the ignition, gas cap, helmet lock, and battery/tool pouch cover should all be keyed the same (unless maybe something was replaced).

There should be a petc0ck valve on the left side of the tank with three settings.  I think they are RUN, PRI (prime) and RES (reserve).  Unless it's been altered, it's vacuum-operated in RUN and RES and simple gravity-feed in PRI.  There's a vacuum line that runs from the petc0ck to the carb and provides vacuum when the engine is running to allow fuel flow in the RUN and RES positions.  When the engine is off, the fuel flow stops.  PRI is used to prime the carb but you shouldn't leave it in that position when the engine is off or you may come back to a puddle of fuel under your bike.

Now that I think about it, I'm not absolutely sure whether it's vacuum or gravity operated in the RES position.  Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks Max!!
Speaking of malfunctions..I think the previous owner of my bike was malfuntioned in the mind..he screwed up so many things on this bike..now I'm having to pay the price after thinking I was getting a great deal on it... ugh!!
Well..it can only get better..unless it blows up!!
haha

ride safe!!

RES works on vacuum as well - it's just a shorter tube on the petc0ck

That's what I figured but I haven't tested it or pulled the petc0ck to look at it closely.

Just for grins here's a picture of the beast - when you turn it from ON <-> RES it opens the hole under one tube or the other - of course for a complete disection of the poor thing see:
