Title: Funny Cold Start! Post by Bobster on 04/20/06 at 15:35:11 When i cold start my bike, I have to pull choke half way, start engine and push back in choke imediately or it will die. Then it idles fine. No warm up with choke on. It wasent like that before i did some mods like, total carb clean, 155 main jet, 55 pilot jet, K&N cone filter, adjust mixture screw. Already had a harley muffler. Adjusted valves and replaced leaky head plug & spark plug. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by SAMM on 04/20/06 at 18:59:25 My 87 hates the choke also... I pull the choke on and crank 5 times then push it in all the way and she starts.. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by 911radioman on 04/20/06 at 19:18:26 I have found my 02 to be a very cold natured bike. Doesn't like to run in cooler weather at all. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by gazab44 on 04/21/06 at 00:35:01 My 96 never needs choke, even in the coldest of weather :) |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by HawkEye1967 on 04/21/06 at 18:24:06 when cold pull choke out 1/2 way start bike idle 2-3 minutes bike starts to sputter, push in choke, ride away. Bike does not like to idle when cold but once it warms up, it's all good. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by klx650sm2002 on 04/22/06 at 03:06:19 With the "choke" on KLX there are only two positions on and off, so full choke and turn over for about 15 seconds and she starts, run for 30 secs with choke switch choke off and drive away. You can give her a squirt of fuel with the accelerator pump to get her to start if she is not dead cold. Clive W :D |

Mine (see signature) used to act like that. Turns out the vacuum diaphram in the petc0ck was leaking and raw fuel was being dumped into the intake manifold, causing a rich condition. I never figured this out until the problem got so bad that the bike wouldn't run well. IHTH someone. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by geo on 12/29/06 at 00:47:59 My 2002 is like Gasab44. After the mods, I didn't have to use the choke anymore. I do have to run it at 1500rpm or so for a minute or so before it will stay running. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by PerrydaSavage on 12/29/06 at 02:22:47 My Bike is bone stock and the usual cold-start procedure is pull choke out full, start the Bike, push choke in to 1/2 right away ... let idle for a min. Gently Ride away and after about a kilometer or so push choke all the way in ... has worked fine for me since I bought the Bike back in '03 ... |

Mine is exactly the same, with the exception of idle time, only takes about 30 secs or less before it starts to sputter and has to be pushed back in, with the mods listed below. If it's above 60 degrees I don't use it at all. |

Whoa. Even if the diaphram was leaking, fuel shouldn't be going anywhere unless the float needle is leaking also. |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by klx650sm2002 on 12/29/06 at 05:38:12 I have since found with the FCR on the KLX that with "choke" on and a squirt of accelerator pump she starts in 5-10 seconds and drives with no "choke" after about 30. Clive W :D |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by serowbot on 12/29/06 at 09:29:50 Greg650, Ooohyeh... , believe me, the leaky petc0ck vacuum will let gas thru. Not down the fuel line but down the vacuum line. Murderous rich! |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by justin_o_guy on 12/29/06 at 11:36:36 So, if the diaphragm goes bad, can I just stick it on prime or am I just gonna have to walk home? I guess the reason I ask is, do I need to replace this before it goes out? It's an 05 model, do I need to hurry? What is the replacement? |

Down the vacuum line? Okay. I just learned something. That will certainly go in the intake. So the vacuum petc0ck is to prevent flooding with a leaking float needle. Now what do we need to stop flooding with a leaking petc0ck? Ah, I miss the good old On/Off days.... |

Mine's an '00 and no leak as far as I know. Yet. I doubt Prime would stop it from leaking down the vacuum line (if it was already leaking in On or Res). That would just turn the gas on for both lines :) I just learned something....and I remember this coming up with someone a couple years ago too. I'm thinking an aftermarket petc0ck would be a good move, in light of this... |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by serowbot on 12/29/06 at 14:39:43 Correct, going to prime won't help. The good news is that the good old days can be here again! Bobo383 has a clever conversion to manual on/off/reserve that has worked well for me. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1113631600 |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by Brewbrother on 12/29/06 at 16:11:54 I feel like the odd man out on starting. I turn the key hit the starter for a second or two it starts. I idle it for a few minutes and then I'm off. :o |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by justin_o_guy on 12/29/06 at 20:57:30 Maybe an emergency "Get it Home" procedure if the diaphragm lets go would be to crimp the vacuum line off & stick it on prime. Untill I replace that petc ock, I will haul a small dowell rod I can stick in the line to plug it off till I get home. |
|
Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by serowbot on 12/30/06 at 00:58:25 Yes, that will work as a temporary fix, but... Don't just plug the vacuum line, (you will block the fuel leak but will cause an air leak), you need to remove the vacuum hose completely and cap both places the hose was connected to (pething's to stop fuel leaking, and carb to stop air sucking). Auto part stores sell little rubber caps for that. Then running on prime will work. O.K? |

Title: Re: Funny Cold Start! Post by DianeS. on 12/30/06 at 15:30:52 When I start my bike, I pull the choke out fully and let it idle until it starts to sputter. Then, I push the choke in halfway, and let it idle a bit more while I finish getting my helmet on. Then, before I take off I push the choke all of the way in, and if the bike still seems to need the choke on, I pull it halfway out and ride up my road for a bit before I push the choke back in. I don't think I need the choke on as long in the summer months, but lately it's been about +6 celcuis when I've ridden the bike. I'm hoping to ride it again in the week, when they aren't calling for snow. DianeS. |

My petc0ck diaphram was letting so much gas into the vacuum line that the engine eventually wouldn't run anymore. I'm so lazy that all I did was disconnect the vacuum line at the petc0ck, plugged it there, and shoved a cap over the vacuum nipple on the petc0ck. It will stay like this until I take the tank off for the next valve lash check. Works for me. Just remember to turn the petc0ck from PRI to ON before walking away from the bike (just like the old days) to avoid potentially flooding the carb. |
