Title: pipe discoloration Post by tfrawg75 on 04/23/06 at 07:19:42 I was once told that if your pipe discolors blue it is too lean but if it turns a honey brown that it is running rich. Is there any truth in that? I was just wondering. The only place I get discoloration is on the jardine pipe it looks like it is right where the baffles start. Just curious on the coloring. thanks |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by lancer on 04/23/06 at 10:58:54 That is a very generalized statement with some truth in it. Checking the spark plug after doing a proper run is the best way to check for a rich/lean condition, next to an actual exhaust analyzer of course. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by tfrawg75 on 04/23/06 at 11:28:32 I've also heard that no matter what I do the jardine will discolor. Atleast I was told basically right about the colors. I will have to check the plug when I get a chance. I leaned it out with the mixture screw and get no more backfires at any time. So I think I'm pretty close to being right |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by tater on 04/24/06 at 19:24:24 I have the same problem both my jardine pipe and just by the bend by the gasket seal is discolerd. Now i was reading if you put a #55pilot in it will stop the backfire at 1 to 2 turns out. which is it make it leaner to stop the backfire or Make it richer to stop' the backfire. not sure. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by steelwolf on 04/24/06 at 19:43:01 Richer to stop the backfire. Thats why you shave the spacer, and UP the jet size. Read this...http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1104205157 |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by lancer on 04/24/06 at 20:54:27 There is only one sure way to have a pipe with no discoloring at all...cover the pipe from cylinder head to muffler tip with chromed heat shields. |

Or do a SavageRob and paint it black! ;D I still haven't ruled out doing that to mine. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by Savage_Rob on 04/26/06 at 11:20:32 And that's temporary. One of these days I plan to have it ceramic coated black... which is an option for you also. They can even coat it with a silver that comes close to chrome, but not quite. As long as it's not grey; enough time in the Navy and telecom both have made me less than enthusiastic about grey for a paint color. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by 911radioman on 04/26/06 at 12:19:01 Now you got me wondering where I'd look for a place that does that. I don't know if there is any place in Louisville or not that offers that service, or is that something where you gotta ship it off somewhere to have done? |
|
Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by Savage_Rob on 04/26/06 at 14:01:09 I've seen a number of places online that I could ship it to but haven't put any real effort into finding one locally. Here are a few I found with some web searches a few months back and saved in my bookmarks. http://www.performancecoatings.com/headercoatings.html http://www.thermaltechcoatings.com/ http://www.amr-coatings.com/ http://www.engineceramics.com/ |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by azjay on 04/27/06 at 15:11:27 drop by a local harley shop or a hot rod shop, and somebody should know who is getting the ceramic coating work for your area. |

as to the chrome discoloration question, brown is simply an intermediate stage to blue as the temperature chrome is exposed to increases. So in one sense, rich running is cooler than optimum tune and may avoid the "blues" but is not recommended just for this reason. In my day a shade-tree mechanic's rule was a blue pipe is the result of a lean-running, overheating engine. Now there is no simple "color rule" as the pipe header temperature depends on several factors; engine tune, trip length, riding style, air temperature and flow etc.. My bikes pipe is still the original color (I baby it), my wife's has reached honey and I have seen some others with a deep blue. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by mickthelimey on 06/29/06 at 22:28:44 My pipe has not discolored,I have an 02. I heard once that when the bike or exaust is new, wind some copper wire around the pipe as close as you can to the cylinder head,I don't know what gauge but it looked to be about one eighth thick, wrapped around about 5 or 6 times, worth a try. |

Title: Re: pipe discoloration Post by Savage_Rob on 06/30/06 at 05:48:58 It may be important to point out that the bluing is not necessarily the result of running lean. It is the result of excessive heat. Since running lean means running hotter, this is often the case. However, I have one that wasn't the result of a lean condition. I had already rejetted, added a K&N and a MAC muffler and had it running without backfires with a header that was largely white chrome and a few inches of honey coloring nearest the engine end. I decided to experiment with header wrap for various reasons. After a couple of weeks I noticed the forward end of my MAC beginning to blue and removed the header wrap to find the entire header pipe a deep blue. Header wrap does indeed keep the heat in, as designed. |

Great idea thanks. I just realized that the last link on my list above (http://www.engineceramics.com/) is actually in Dallas. I'll have to drop by there sometime in the next few weeks and talk with 'em. |
