Title: tictictic: question for the experts Post by SeattleSavage on 04/24/06 at 20:25:27 So my valves seem to be ticking a little louder than normal today. I replaced my timing chain and set the valve gaps. Then I put about 220 pretty easy miles on her. You think the timing chain is breaking in and offsetting my valve timing a little causing the excess ticking? Yes, No, Maybe? Thanks for any responses or words of wisdom. Kev |

Title: Re: tictictic: question for the experts Post by MacAttack on 05/25/06 at 12:39:26 No, because your clearances are set with the valves closed. Any slop in the timing chain would delay opening, but not increase it. You might be a bit hypersensitive, having just adjusted them. Or... the locknut on your adjusting screw may have loosened, and your clearance is growing (sorry!). That stuff is all hardened steel and takes a long time to mushroom, but it may be worth popping the covers off and taking a look. Too loose is better than too tight. Some motors tighten up over time; I don't know about this one though. VWs were famous for it. 8) |

Title: Re: tictictic: question for the experts Post by SeattleSavage on 05/25/06 at 18:20:58 Thanks Mac, It ended up being a worn cam that tore up my exhaust rocker arm causing the slop. (think I knew it didn't want to face it) New cam new arm and a different head cover and she seems to be fine. Someone had run her dry in the past or at least that's my best guess looking at the symptoms she had. Thanks again, Kev |
