Title: Weak spark!
Post by dreamweaver on 04/29/06 at 15:26:39

I'm Angie's friend Chris.  I got the carburetor back from the shop today, slapped it all together and it still smokes badly and fouls the plug after 20 miles.

On a whim I grounded the plug and the spark is yellowish...not good.  The bike came with a Denso X24EPR-U9 plug, should be the X22...would this cause a weak spark or something with the ignition?  Do these have CDI?

Accoording the specs.( of the Suzuki Workshop Manual) you have the right plug .

The KLX is notorious for it's weak coil so I use an Iridium plug to nurse it, used to be an NGK DPR8EIX-9 but now is a Denso IX24B.Shouldn't be a problem with the Savage but wouldn't hurt any.

I think something is wrong with the coil though.  The bike won't run anymore.  It left her stranded last night and I had to shove it in the back of my Astro.

Any recommendations where to get a new coil or ignitor/CDI?

There's one on e-bay. Make a search with LS 650 or LS650 in e-bay motors.

Unless you can get the ignitor for less than a new coil, I would try the coil first.  Mine died at 20k miles.  Easy fix.

Why don't Yo just check Your coil? Takes a $3.99 ohmmeter. If You don't know how any mc shop will do it probably for free.
Also check the cpark plug cap.
Your problem seems more like a CDI, but check all the possibilities before You replace it.
The easiest way will be if there is other Savage rider who will  let You swap parts.
