Post by SouthernMD on 05/07/06 at 16:58:44

Hi All

With a Sporster muffler what sound does the Savage make a deep throaty Bop Bop Bop Bop or a flat Blat Blat Blat Blat?

Mine. Nice deep wopwopwopwop @ low rpm under torque, pretty deep and loud blatblatblatblat if I kick her hard.

That's with an 883/1200 sportster muffler and jetted carb

I agree with both-BopBop and BlatBlat. My sporty has no baffle and is as describe by SeattleSavage.  On decel sounds alot like a jake brake, too.  Riders behind me say it is really loud and back off to save their hearing!  Might be putting the baffled sporty back on.

get a harley muff....they are cheap....then punch a 1/2 inch hole in the baffle. Yes it is hard to do. Sounds great.

Clueless.......

Under hard acceleration I myself can't tell a difference from stock to sporty.  On deceleration it has a much nicer wop wop sound.  Same with idle.  Idle is much less noticeable than the decel, but is an improvement over stock.  If you're looking for something really loud this isn't it IMHO.  For me I wasn't looking for too loud so this is perfect.

Louder?  Too Loud?...like Screamin Eagle loud or just a bit over the stock Sporty?  Did you just use a drill to make the hole?

I think there is a post in technical that you can here the differance of Exhaust sounds  ;D

a drill won't touch it. Used a punch.
That is some kinda tough metal!

The tech thread does not address sporty exhausts.

RussG,

My stock was so quiet, I wonder if different one's give off different sounds or is it just age and maybe baffle rust, or my stock was clogged with carbon or rust.

Mine is deep and loud enough that I feel for my neighbors when I'm warming her up. (it warms up in my alley, between two three story buildings)

But when I had the stock muff on, the only thing I felt was embarassed at the pitter putter of noise mine would make.

OK, that explains it pretty good, thanks all.  I guess when I do the carb I have to do the muffler too.

If you like a nice deep rumble, alot like a harley, try a Supertrapp.. I have heard the Savage with a Jardine, a drilled out stock muffler, (which made me laugh), it sounded like a lawnmower on steroids, and have ridden behind Gregg D and his Rassk for a bit last summer and my ears are still ringing. The Supertrapp even gets compliments from the harley riders. What is nice about it is you can remove disks to soften the sound so you dont wake the neighbors, and when you want to punish them, add disks for more sound and power.

Over 200 bucks, Ouch!  Thanks chriss but it’s not in the budget.

I have an 883 Sportster muffler that I still have to fit, and yes it does have the baffle.
'Hammer away at the baffle', you say... but wouldn't a decent power drill with a long enough bit/point/whatever, anything between 3/8" and 1/2"?

I've got a straight thru Porker Pipe to put on when I get all the bits of her back together!!  :D

Can't wait to hear what she sings like in that dress!!

The only trouble here in the UK is that the Feds are real strict on illegal pipes :'(

We were on an Easter Egg run the other day (approx 20 bikes) and a copper overtook us one by one to check the bikes. He eventually pulled the lead rider cos of a small number plate. Checked his pipe (which was a "not for road use" straight thru. Luckily he had bought one of those signs off Ebay days before that you fix to your pipe to make it seem legal! Confused the copper!! ;D He couldn't understand why it was legal. Anyhow, he let the rider off with a warning for the plate when he found out what he did for a living.......another Police Officer. Ha Ha ;D

Sorry to read what the EPA is doing to you guys re Custom bikes etc!

17" straight thru harley pipe on the wifes bike, BOOM,BOOM,BOOM, i can occasionally hear her over my straight pipe harley, that way i know where shes at ... and the idiots in cages can hear her too, even with their windows up and the a/c on with the stereo blasting  ;D loud pipes save lives, imo

Don't do any mods to the sportster muffler until you try it stock. It will probably be loud enough for you. You should be able to get one on E-bay, just make sure you get pre 2004. I bought two mint condition ones not too long ago for $41.50 delivered.

Pre 04?  Why?

Title: Re: Exhaust Sound
Post by pgolden on 05/08/06 at 14:27:51

The '04 and newer Harley mufflers have a crossover pipe connecting them together. If you use one of those you will have a large pipe flange pointing out of the front of the muffler. UGLY

SeattleSavage,

My stock was pathetic at idle, but when I opened up the throttle it made quite a satisfying wop wop wop.  The Sportster might be a very little bit louder under hard accleration but I can't notice from the drivers seat at least.  Perhaps it's much louder if you're beside or behind me.  I'm still not loud enough to get any rude looks though.  In my case the sporty just made it sound like a bike instead of a moped.

Next question, How does the Carb / Muffler mod affect gas mileage?

Title: Re: Exhaust Sound
Post by 911radioman on 05/09/06 at 02:45:28

I can only answer for how mine does currently, I average anywhere from 52-55 mpg after all the mods.  However, I did mine as soon as I got the bike, so I am not really sure what a bone stock Savage/S40 will do as far as mileage goes.

Bone stock 05 S40 here, till first service.......SOON!!!
54mpg so far.

Post by Guido on 05/09/06 at 17:25:22

By the way, if somebody has a better sound file of the Jardine I'd really to hear it. That's the one I'm leaning towards right now after the initial service. I really like the Screamin Eagle but am afraid it would be too loud in the long term.

Title: Re: Exhaust Sound
Post by azjay on 05/10/06 at 07:01:33

they're inexpensive, you could try one, if you dont like it, your not out much $. then you can move to a jardine, i thought i saw cobra offered a pipe for the savage also.

Title: Re: Exhaust Sound
Post by Guido on 05/10/06 at 15:28:00

Are the Jardine and Screamin Eagle pretty close on decibels? Just a deeper tone for the SE?

Title: Re: Exhaust Sound
Post by pgolden on 05/10/06 at 19:37:47

My bike came with a Jardine, It was so loud I could not ride it til I put the sportster muffler on it.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna try the sportster muffler on mine.  I like the MAC a lot but it's pretty dang loud.
