i did not get the results i was hoping for. the idle adjust is now set for less than 1 turn out, and the backfire does not seem to have resolved itself. i guess i'll return to the 52.5, and look for exhaust leak/air leak. any suggetions? similar experiences?

Backfire drove me nuts adjusting/readjusting the carb until I replaced the gasket between the cylinder head and the header.

Are any of the holes in your swiss cheese airbox cover on the carburator side of the cover? This will cause many undesirable effects. Make sure your filter is seated properly. If you have the sportster muff 152.5 and 55 pilot, you should probably at least go with the K&N stock replacement. Check the vacuum hose from petthingy for cracks/leaks. Check the clamps on the carb head and carb to airbox, you don't want those leaking either.

rob, i replaced the header gasket when i un-muffled the exhaust. they're cheap, i might do it again just to eliminate it.
seattle, the holes are all on the filtered side, clamps are tight, i'll check for vacuum leaks. i'm not convinced that an air filter wiil cause a low rpm/mid range problem, but i'll keep it mind.

Have you tried re-torqueing the exhaust bolts? When I installed the Dyna muffler, I bought a new header gasket. I torqued it carefully. I rode it a couple of days. Finally I got back around to checking the header bolts and found they loose enough to remove without a wrench.

So I torqued them again. I asked about it here, and someone told me that you need to re-torque them. It actually took about 4 times until the bolts remained tight. Apparently the gasket has to crush and the torque spec is not high enough to do that in one pass.

This solved my header bluing problem. It's sort of golden now. Backfiring is all gone, except for one last gasp on shutdown.

Does anyone undertand why an exhaust leak causes a backfire?
