Title: gripping Post by guitarsr4girls2 on 05/15/06 at 21:01:49 My mom went to the Kawasaki shop today because she wanted to buy me a new set of grips as a birthday present and she came home with a set of $14.99, 7/8" grips because that's what they told her to get. The guys up at this shop told her (3 different guys, keep in mind) that the Savage has 7/8" bars and that the cables from the throttle are "just hanging on the bar", so you CANNOT put kuryakyn grips on there. Obviously this is all not true and my mother encountered a few useless employees, at least as far as Suzukis are concerned, but my question for you is this: What exactly is the process and difficulty level of putting a set of iso-grips on? I know you've all done it, so maybe I can get some advice from someone with a little bit more than catalog experience. |

Title: Re: gripping Post by slavy on 05/15/06 at 21:09:11 To take off the old ones- just slice them with razor blade. To put the new ones- the best way is to use a compressed air. If not- soapy water will do. Just don't use oil because later the new grips might keep rotating. |

I haven't messed with my Savage but just did a handlebar swap on another bike and the process (removing and reinstalling the grips) was very easy. Go for it. Oh, and find a new parts man ;D |

Title: Re: gripping Post by WD on 05/15/06 at 22:45:56 Changing out the 1" grips on a Savage is a piece of cake. Tap the chrome end caps off with a screwdriver. Throw them away. Slice off the left rubber grip, and throw it away. You may need to reuse the chrome collar, if not, slide it off and throw it away. Remove the screw from the throttle cable. Remove the two screws from the switch housing and seperate the halves. Twist the throttle grip until you can unhook the cable. Slice off the rubber as before. Spray the inside of your new grips with hairspray or WD40, they will both set up rock hard when they dry. I prefer WD40, have been using it for years as grip lube/cement. With the new grips in place, attach the throttle cable. Reinstall the screws. Gas up bike. Go for test ride, come home and kick yourself for putting those awful, too fat grips on your bike. -WD |

Title: Re: gripping Post by Lion on 05/16/06 at 05:58:31 It takes about 1 hour with lazy work ;) My stock grips were so worn that I could remove the left one with my hand. The other was a bit harder but I could loosen the rubber with a screwdriver. Then I had to razor down those plastic lines from the grip which kept the rubber on them. After it I sanded it smooth and pulled on the new grip. It was tight just as I needed so I didn't need any glue or hairspray. But that was mine you may need something like that. Anyway I wish my mother would be like yours: buying MC stuff for a present ;D |

Title: Re: gripping Post by 911radioman on 05/19/06 at 14:47:17 You probably got some glue where you shouldn't have. You might try removing the end cap of your grip and see if you can't work a thin knife or something around the edges and see if you can't get the grip loosened up. |
