Title: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by azjay on 05/20/06 at 06:07:22 with a 155 main jet is waaay too fat for us, it wont hardly run, and the exhaust is typical fat black. i think i'll change to a 152.5 with 1/2 spacer, will let you know. i checked the exhaust pipe at the head, the bolts took 1/4 turn each, but i wouldn't consider them loose. still chasing the backfire :-/ |

Title: Re: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by Dynobob on 05/20/06 at 16:48:53 Going from 2/3 to 1/2 spacer will make your midrange richer. That would make your problem worse don't you think. Yes the 155 main jet is probably too rich for that muffler. |

Title: Re: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by azjay on 05/22/06 at 07:18:00 that is what i wanted, was to fatten up mid range some, up until then, we still had a good amount of lean pop in the exhaust. i'm not sure what was going on, but it seems to have cleared itself up. we put 300 miles on yesterday(101*@ 9:30am & 110* hi), and 70 miles on saturday(105*hi). it is still a bit fat, which i normally wouldn't mind(actually prefer), but yesterday on the way home, we were running 70mph into a 25mph headwind, and the wife ran out of fuel at 70 miles, 35mpg? ??? wow! :o bummer :P thats worse than my harley :-/ i'm thinking the 152.5 is going in next. |

Title: Re: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by Dynobob on 05/22/06 at 12:09:59 With a Sportster muffler you'd be better off with a 2/3 spacer, not the 1/3 spacer that you're running. You're too rich and needle and spacer is where you run most of the time. You should be getting at least 50 mpg. Riding in a stong headwind will affect your mileage but not as much as you're down. Run a 2/3s spacer and life will be good. |

Title: Re: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by azjay on 05/23/06 at 06:38:07 thanks, i agree, i should clarify that the muffler is actually a 17" straight thru (dyna i think) with the slot mount, not really much of a muff ;D |

Title: Re: changed 2/3 spacer to 1/2 spacer Post by azjay on 05/24/06 at 21:02:31 i looked at the spark plug today, it is a milk chocolate brown (not black or rich chocolate), darker than tan. normally that is exactly the way i like to see them out here, however, 35 mpg on sunday sucked. i'm going to leave the 155 main in for now, and ride it back and forth to work (6miles @) and take another read at the end of next week. |
