Title: noise!! Post by grey-head on 05/20/06 at 15:37:31 for some reason my 2001 savage has started making a noise that seems to be coming from either the drive pulley or the driven pulley. (i think this because it only makes this noise when shutting-off the throttle). could the belt be too tight /loose, hasn't been worked on (lately) thanks and God bless...grey-head |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by SeattleSavage on 05/20/06 at 16:54:36 listen real carefully to your speedo, it is the most common culprit and you can't hear it with the throttle on at all. (on mine at least) But when I'm off the throttle and coasting I can hear the cable noise easy. It may not be, but check that first to make sure, many have had the issue here. Kevin |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by Kropatchek on 05/21/06 at 05:30:22 Check the belt tension anyway. Easy to do with the 90 degree twist methode. Next check the cover that's over the drive pulley, the 3 bolts that are holding them. When you take them off keep the sets of washers and rubber bushings to-gether as they are all different lenghts. Check the big nut of the drive pulley for tightnes. Than continue as suggested above, the speedo rattle. Greetz Kropatchek 8) |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by grey-head on 05/21/06 at 10:24:33 don't mean to sound alarmed, but the sound is more of a rumbling, not the chirping that comes from the speedo. (already had that problem, as well as the head-plug) for a nice bike it sure is plagued with gremlins!! thanks again and God bless--grey-head |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by grey-head on 05/23/06 at 15:58:41 talked to a mechanic friend today, he rode the bike and said it sounds like a bearing going south. (transmission or rear wheel) hope to findout soon. has anyone had bearing problems? it's a 2001 with a little over 19000 on it. (by my standards that's new) thanks again and God bless...-grey-head- |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by Reelthing on 05/23/06 at 17:35:50 check the belt for alignment and tension as suggested - and check that the drive pulley is tight and not floating around on the shaft -it's easy to check just take out three bolts that hold the cover on and check it for play on the shaft - some bikes do not seem to come with any where near the correct torque there are some pics around here of one that wasn't tight, wore the spline teeth, and made the exact noise you describe when you let off on the throttle - had to replace the drive pulley at 20k miles - here it is http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1130022642 |

Title: Re: noise!! Post by Reelthing on 05/30/06 at 10:52:01 got an email from grey-head seems a lose drive pulley was his problem - had almost no spline teeth left but had not hurt the output shaft at all - seems the nut had very little torque on it with a very clean bend in the retaining washer - thats 2 or 3 of us with the issue that seems to come from the factory this way - maybe - since it's very easy to check the torque - or at least add a little - i'd sure suggest at least folks with higher mileage bikes do so |
