Title: A Little Extra Oil
Post by red2k1 on 05/31/06 at 12:58:42

Some miles back I accidentially over filled the crankcase above the upper mark on the oil sight glass.  It was only about 3 or 4 additional ounces.  What has happened since is that the transmission is now quiter and shifts much easier and far more smoothly.

I now have about 600 miles on the bike with this additional oil and see no problems.  Has anyone else experienced this or believe that this slight oil overfill is problamatic?

imo > a FEW ounces wont hurt.. ive done the same thing
but...in MOST engines a lil low is better than TOO much
in an air cooled engine the oil is a coolent also..on my baby thumper i have an add on external oil cooler...remember modified vw bugs had a cooler and a bigger sump and pump...
the proplem with TOO much oil is you are shortining the(jmo) life of seals & gaskets..the real question is  how much is TOO much... ::)

keep the '95 of mine a little full as well - valve train seems quiter - but as you say it's just a couple of extra oz's a little over the high fill line on the sight glass.

It's also important to remember to have the engine level (both side-to-side and front-to-back) when checking the level.  This really comes into play if you move to taller shocks like I (and several others) have.

Thanks for your observations, I appreciate it.
