Title: Gas Jockeys Post by Veritas on 06/24/06 at 18:02:41 What do you do if you find yourself in a place where you find only full serve gas stations, or New Jersey where they don't let you touch thier pumps? Do you push your bike to a self serve, or is it ok to ask them to do it yourself? |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by DaddySauce on 06/24/06 at 18:41:10 I don't know the laws there... but I've heard of people getting really pissed off if you try to pump your own gas. I think it's like that in Oregon or somewhere up north as well. Stupid laws if you ask me. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by necropsy on 06/24/06 at 21:34:51 Wow, I've never heard of that. Every time I pull up to a full serve, the jockey just stands there all nervous, with the pump out at arms length, ready to hand it off to me, like he thinks it might be a better idea if I do it myself, because he might wind up dead. At 5'4", 120lbs. I'm not a very intimidating person. But the idea of a territorial pump jockey is just too funny. And laws?? They actually inacted laws that protect territorial gas station attendants? |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Veritas on 06/24/06 at 23:53:03 Yeah, in those states, for "safety reasons" you are not allowed to pump your own gas. In my Mustang, I always planned my gas stops to avoid needing it in New Jersey, but with the S40, I can't do that because of it's limited range. I swear, if a gas jockey tried to fill up my tank and got gas everywhere, I'd stuff him into my gas tank. So it is ok then to request to do it yourself? |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Kropatchek on 06/25/06 at 02:59:43 Here in the Netherlands you can hardly find a station that pums gas. It's all DIY. Greetz Kropatchek 8) |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Guido on 06/25/06 at 06:28:17 What's a full service station? ;D Don't have any in these parts. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by HawkEye1967 on 06/25/06 at 07:52:47 I don't blame the guy for not wanting to be stuffed into your gas tank, no laws here but at the full service stations here they just hand me the nozzle and I do it myself. btw just how mean do you look. ;D |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by WD on 06/25/06 at 09:25:20 I've never had that problem, even in the "Independent Soviet Republic of Portland". Working in bike shops, and looking a bit like Charles Manson, does have its advantages... Find a station willing to let you pump it yourself. Or make the pump jockey wrap a rag around the filler opening to catch any splash out. -WD |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Savage_Rob on 06/25/06 at 13:35:18 I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a full-service gas station. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by starmom on 06/25/06 at 16:04:07 yup, its a northeast thing, New Jersey............... they would probably over fill and make a mess, and I would be PISSED! |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by thedocdm on 06/25/06 at 16:53:07 I was wondering this myself when I rode to NYC a few weeks back. I stopped in NJ and the attendant just handed me the nozzle. First and only fillup in NJ with the bike. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by lancer on 06/25/06 at 17:34:46 My son is stationed in NJ with the Air Force, I must say that I have never in my life seen such a "PROGRESSIVE" state that is so freaking backwards, inside out and upside down. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Lion on 06/26/06 at 02:21:22 It must be disgusting when a stranger puts something into your pretty bike's fuel tank. Phew! ;D |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by vroom1776 on 06/26/06 at 12:00:16 Yeah, it's a bunch of BS. I usually just sit ont he bike and let him hand me the darn pump. when I have to fill up at one of these darn palces. >:( |
|
Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by 911radioman on 06/26/06 at 17:02:38 That's not a worry around these parts. Darned few full service gas stations left, and if I found myself at one I'd tell him to enjoy the free pay while I do his work for him. I do enough spilling of gas myself, let alone someone else doing it for me! ;D |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by MacAttack on 06/26/06 at 17:15:03 Some of you need to be old and poor, when it's cold and rainy. You'll understand why Oregon and NJ lead the nation. Take a deep breath and relax. Hurrying only gets you killed, especially on a bike. Now then - in Oregon, at least, it's LEGAL for YOU, the motorcyclist, to pump your own gas. In fact, it's expected. ;D |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by luken on 06/27/06 at 07:52:52 Speaking of which, how full do you fill up your tank? the onwers manuel says not to fill it up above the 3/4 mark or something. I dont remember. Do you just top it off? From what I read it sounded like doing that was bad, but I cant imageine why. |
|
Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Island_Biker on 06/27/06 at 09:24:30 I haven't stopped at a full service station with my bike at all. As far as filling the tank 3/4, with the small tank we have, I can't imagine doing that. |
|
Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by bikingb on 06/27/06 at 12:49:20 If you fill it all the way up to the top of the neck (what ever you call the thing the cap fits in) , gas will leak out onto your beautiful tank. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by Al_ironman on 06/27/06 at 13:01:55 I don't know of but 1 full service station around anymore and it's about 30 miles from me. Back in the day when I was a "gas Jockey", I was taught to hand the pump to the rider. Maybe cause the guys who owned the stations were "wrenchers" and Bikers theirselves. I did not mind handing over the hose; it gave me more time to check out the bike! |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by DianeS. on 06/27/06 at 14:57:21 I've read that you should fill the gas tank to the bottom of the filler neck - I guess to leave a bit of space at the top for expansion. |
|
Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by zbiker on 07/01/06 at 08:42:54 whatever bike you have if you`re not stopping after fillup like you have many miles to go running will create it`s own space for gaz expansion. If you filled to the top and let it stand there in the sun, then you`re sure to have a mess. Just my 2 cents. |

Title: Re: Gas Jockeys Post by sluggo on 07/01/06 at 11:57:47 most of my dealing in oregon they have handed me the pump after they activate it. i always fill the bike upright not on the stand. |
