Title: Savage owner soon
Post by zbiker on 06/30/06 at 20:08:20

I have return to motorcycling 3 years ago, got my hand on the first bike i could find a kawa750 1982 until last august when i decide to be a bit more stylish with a cruiser the yam virago 1000 1984, wich deceived me a lot with all the complications they put into the bike, it s got style, is powerfull but all those safeties switches and gadgets are a killing when you diagnose an electric problem. So i finally saw the light by luck when i heard about the Savage, so as soon as i get rid of the vigo this is what i want. Any advices about what to look for,
as a bad year production, obtainability of parts, they seem very easy to take care of, i had the chance to sit on one but that s it. So come on and convince me i am doing the right choice in case i decide on the honda vlx.
I am an experience rider(started biking in 1976 for 15 years) i am doing a bit of highway but not much so a big bike is not really needed and i don t mind standing down in cc so...

let the stealership buy you a couple of test rides on a new S40, where are you at, maybe somebody close by would swap bikes with you for an hour or two?. i fell into my wife's savage, a '96 with only 6700 miles on the clock when we bought it. since owning it, we have really come to like it way better than many other bikes on the road, and the fact that it is a thumper, garners respect from every motorcycle group, (including the die hard american v-twin crowd), nobody disses the bike and it does keep up quite well with everybody else, but a little tweeking, and the animal within, becomes a raging beast, fun, fun, fun! i dont know of any particular year model to avoid, they're all tuneable and parts are interchangable. they did move from a 4spd to 5spd(95 and later), that might be a good reference to use as a year model break in your search. good luck

The Savage/S40 is a very good bike over all.  If you are not concerned with getting a brand new one, then you can save a lot of $$ with a used one.  There are many used ones on the market with low miles for $2000-3000... or even less if you find the right one at the right time.   You can find some for sale with just a few thousand miles, and it really does not matter what model year it is as long as it was taken care of.
Saving money on a used bike makes it easier $$ wise to do the mod's most common for us ... carb/filter, exhaust, shocks, fork brace, & seat.  Those changes make it ride better, more comfortable and will make more power.

Well as a point of reference I got my '02 with 3.5k miles for $2700.  I saw an even lower mile one go for $2300 earlier this year.  Check ebay for winning bids to get a good idea of what a fiar price is.  When I checked KBB I think it was something like 1750 for trade in and 2590 retail.  Figure a nice average and thats what you should be looking at.

Keep in mind, it is summer so the whole supply/demand thing comes into play.

Bought my 96 with 4,000 miles on it about six weeks ago for $1700. Only thing it really needs is new tires, and I have those....by the time I get the tires mounted, and do the carb mods, the K&N pod, iridium plug, and Screaming Eagle pipe (all of which I already bought by searching out bargains), I'll be up to about the 2 grand the lady I bought it from was originally asking.....not bad I don't think for a bike with that low of miles and in the shape it's in. All in all, I think Savage's are a pretty well kept secret- two weeks before I bought my 96, I just missed another 96 with 6,000 miles, one owner, that needed a new battery.....$1,000 or best offer :(  I kicked myself HARD for not reading the ads first thing in the morning that morning!

I was reading the classified section today and I saw a 2001 Savage with 3000 miles, windshield, bags, mint condition for 2400.00, but it's here in Arkansas. If you will be patient, you will find a deal.

I`m confident i`ll find my new baby soon, i just got to get rid of the virago first, i did the mistake when i had my kawa750 to buy the virago and it took almost a year to sell the kawa. As they say first thing first and i`ll get there soon enough, thank you all for the advices,i keep reading everything in here and learn a lot, that bike will really be what i`m searching in a bike as to look, feel, and the possibility to do everything myself.

I just traded in my old bike for a 2002 Suzuki Savage 650 with 2,500 miles and I am THRILLED with it. My "old" bike was not a Suzuki and it was a 2005 model, and it was nothing but problem after problem. ... I used to have a Honda and loved it, but I think I may like this one even more. I went for a three-hour ride today and no complaints.
