Gotta say, it turned out fantastic and Midas Muffler Shops rule! Went in there first thing after they opened, asked the manager if he'd accommodate me on my request for a 10 degree piece of pipe. He said sure, let me go get my guy so you can tell him what you want. Only charged me $5.99, so I'm totally happy!

Only caveat, I had the adapter made 7" in length. It was about an inch too long, but the vise and a hacksaw took care of that in short order. The muffler track lays right in the OEM exhaust bracket, and the mount was sweet.

My plan was to find some band clamps, but the local shop didn't have any -- go figure. All those yaps wanna do is sell new bikes, they don't wanna carry anything in the way of parts. Another indie shop didn't open for another 3 hours and I had other things to do today in addition to getting the bike back together, so I went with automotive clamps against my will.

After brute forcing the clamps, I got it down to zero leaks, however I think I will come back and revisit it on a slow day and weld everything together. Shouldn't be a big deal, and I've got a friend with a fabrication shop so I can yank the whole outfit off there, take it to him, let him weld it and then remove the automotive clamps.

Don't get me wrong, its fine as it is with zero leaks, I just don't like the look of automotive clamps on a bike. ;D

Anyhow, here is the Savage in its current incarnation. Notice also I chromed out the tank, fenders and side panels, which sets it off a bit I think.

Sounds like Paul will get ya taken care of, although I'd like to see some parts of Arkansas sometime. Only part I've ever been in is West Memphis, and I darn sure didn't spend long there! ;D

Waiting for my slash cut muffler to arrive from Lancer, so am avidly looking @ all your (& others') muffler work - good job!

Hope my fitting goes as well as yours!

Question - did you end up with the 6" (well, 7" in your case!) adapter going into the at the other end of the adaptoro, did the adaptor fit over the pipe or into it?

Appreciate your input.

In meantime, thanks for sharp looking pics, not only of a great looking muffler, but a great looking bike too!

Maybe the Sportster mufflers are a tad shorter than the Dyna mufflers, but a 7" adapter was way too long and I whacked about an inch or so off of it once I got it home. Even then, the muffler is mounted about an inch rearward of the original muffler mounting holes on the bracket.

I had the Dyna muffler flared ever so slightly to accept the 1 3/4" adapter. The local Midas muffler guy was an absolute pro at throwing this together for me.

Get this -- I went to another independent muffler shop before going to Midas. The guy acted like he really didn't want to do it, and wanted to charge me $22 for the adapter, plus I had to buy the remainder of the pipe he cut the adapter from. Midas charged me for the adapter only, no worry about any left over pipe.

BTW, thanks for the compliment on my bike. It gets a lot of looks around these parts, and a lot of people get blown away when I tell them its a big thumper! Ran into an old-timer at the gas station the other night next to my work. I had just finished filling up with gas and he pulled up next to me and said "Is that a thumper?" I told him that it was, and he replied "I haven't seen one of those in years, what year is it?" When I told him it was an '02, he was blown away. He thought it was something out of the '60's or '70's. Then he proceeded to tell me about his old Norton he had at home. ;D

I have to say too, if you're looking for the "rumble", but not the spleen rupturing noise at road speed, this is it. It is really mellow when you're wound up but flows really well.

Oh... and NO BACKFIRES!!! NOT ONE!!! ZILCH!!! ZERO!!! NADA!!!

That alone is worth the happy dance!!! ;D 8)

I put a Dyna muffler on my Savage a few months back. I really like the way it mounts - very secure.

Did you use the gasket from the stock muffler?

BTW, a HD dealer will probably have a band clamp specifically for that muffler. It's pretty expensive, liek $12, but it is very strong. I used a 1.75" Cobra t-bolt clamp (p/n 95-2953P) clamp on the adpater to head pipe end. It's a pretty good clamp, too.

I used no gaskets whatsoever. I would've had to have had the pipe flared even more to use the stock Suzuki gasket.

Besides sound/tone, are there any changes in performance or mileage that you can share? Also, could you please clarify what carb jet settings and air/other mods you are running with the Dyna?

Just picked up two Dyna's off eBay to place on a stock 2001 Savage so am curious what else I need to do to give it a little boost.

Performance is daylight/dark as opposed to a stock can. Then again, ANY muffler other than stock can will give you that. My main thrust was losing the brain rattling high-end sound while retaining the performance. Sound-wise, the Dyna is practically identical to a Sportster muff, I just like the mount up better than the Sporty muff.

All my mods/jetting is mentioned in my signature below. I run a #55 pilot jet and a 152.5 main jet with a 1/2 spacer. Just in what limited trial runs I've done, I'm probably a little rich with the pilot jet, as I'm only about a 1/2 turn out from totally closed with the pilot screw, so I'll probably take it back to the 52.5 jet when I get a chance but I'll run a few tanks of gas through it and see what mileage I get first as well as monitor what's coming out the back end of the bike as far as sooting goes before I change anything.

Mileage is yet to be determined. We've had two days of rain around here and I've had other things to do so I haven't gotten out and really ran it yet, but I'm anticipating no different mileage than I've consistently gotten, which would be around 52-54 mpg.

Any news on the Dyna installation front as far as performance and adjustments?

As soon as my bike comes out of the shop to resolve an electrical issue, one of the dyna's I bought is going on! Probably be selling the other dyna (packaged deal on eBay) soon thereafter.

Performance and sound are on par with the Sportster muffler. I'm still toying around with jetting and the white spacer so I don't have any firm answers there. Still looking for what the bike likes best.

Last time I had my sporty muffler off I drilled a 3/8 inch hole in the baffle. Didn't make it much louder but made the exhaust note sharper. Backing off the throttle at highway speeds really sounds different, a bit more raspy with a little crackle, love so far.
