Title: Reading the SuperTrapp
Post by geo on 07/27/06 at 20:03:42

I have a SuperTrapp exhaust on my LS650. I rejetted the carb with a Dynojet DL144 main. Now, the Dynojet kit replaces the needle and keeps the stock white washer. I don't know how the Dynojet DL144 compares with other main jets available.

What I have is black soot accumulating on my SuperTrapp discs. So, I think I'm running too rich. I ordered another 6-pack of discs, and I'm planning to add 2 more discs to lean it out better.

I'm looking for someone who has been through this, and what their solution was. ???

Yes, the DJ needle is adjustable.  Try looking at the Mikuni / Dynojet jet size comparison topic in the Tech forum to get an idea of the DJ size.  I didn't see a 144 on it; that seems to be off the chart on the small end but Dynojet may have more info on that comparison.  I'd suggest spending $3 for the right size Mikuni main jet.  I'd try a 152.5 with the Supertrapp; maybe a 155.  IMO, the only thing worth keeping from the DJ kit is the needle - and it's certainly not worth the price of the kit.

This DJ144 jet is plenty powerful. I had to add 3 more SuperTrapp discs to 11 to get rid of the black soot.
This thing has scary acceleration now. I still have a sticky needle, and sometimes won't go to higher RPMs.
This happens if I ride a distance at constant throttle.

Yes you're rich. I have a Supertrapp and a 157.5 main jet and no black soot at all. My disks (stock number) are clean and a golden color.

this supertrapp has got me all confused. the phamplet that comes with it says you dont need to rejet if you dont use more than 8 discs. im running 8 with a k@n air filter and no rejetting. It pops a little sometimes when decelerating but not often and not very loud. Took a major road trip on my 650 (5,000 miles in a month) and pulled the plug when i got home. plug was nice and tan, and what little soot on the discs i could wipe off with my finger. it runs strong and smooth, so how come i dont need no rejetting?

With a K&N and a Supertrapp, you should be very lean. What method did you use to read your plug? Have you owned your bike since new? Perhaps a previous owner did some jetting?
