I turned my fuel petcock into the "On, Off, Reserve" type to fix my leaky diaphram. After doing so I used a clear fuel line to ensure fuel was getting to the carb. Turns out, it isn't. If the fuel line is not connected to the carb, fuel flows freely from the tank. If the fuel line is connected to the carb, nothing comes out of the tank. I took off the float bowl and tried to see if fuel was flowing...nothing. Something in the float area is stopping fuel from flowing. What could it be? Opinions anyone?

It sounds like your float needle is stuck. It is up under the float. You have to remove the float to gain access to it. You could first try squirting some spray carb cleaner into the fuel inlet tube. It should free up fairly easily. Sometimes I rap on the side of a carb with the handle of a screwdriver to help free up a sticking float.

The float seems to be moving easily, but fuel only fills the fuel line from the carb, up to one inch of th efuel line. Basically 3/4 of the fuel line is always empty. Any other suggestions?

I would've suggested a lack of vacuum but you've converted your petc0ck so that it no longer uses vacuum. Could be the petc0ck is hosed. If you remove the fuel line from the carb and simply try to drain it into a can, does it flow freely? If not, check upstream to the petc0ck and tank. If it does flow freely, check for obstruction in the carb.

if all you changed was the petc0k what did you do with the vacume line that went into your carb?? pm lancer he seems to be the carb guru on this site maybe he can help..good luck !!

once the float closes the flow, wether the fuel line is full or not, flow stops, is it creating a running problem?

When you converted the petcock did you also open up the vacuum diaphram in the petc0ck? If not it will block fuel from going down the line. It is on the back of the petc0ck behind 4 screws, where the vac line used to hook up.

The float moves easily...but does the needle underneath it ? If you've converted your petc0ck to manual, disconnected the vacuum lines, and have an unimpeded flow of gas, then it must be the float needle which will be glued to it's seat.

With the bowl off and the fuel line connected, turn on the gas and let the float drop. You should have a never ending flow of gas. Lightly raise the float all the way - gas flow should stop. If both of these things happen, your float needle is working properly. This test will confirm that your petc0ck and your float needle are working properly.

Thanks everyone, I seem to have everything in working order now. It was definitely a float issue.

Just to be sure though, how fast should fuel flow into the bowl? It wasn't coming out of the tank like a faucet turned all the way open, more like a faucet 1/4 open. The fuel line had fuel flowing through it, but it didn't take up the whole interior of the line, just a few centimeters along the bottom until the float bowl filled up, then the rest of the line gradually followed.
