Title: Special speedo - never seen before
Post by blackiex on 08/11/06 at 01:51:26

Dear guys,

I have seen a lot of pictures about Savages and read the OM, too, but the speedo I have is not the same that you have. Look...

http://chopperfield.uw.hu/my_speedo.jpg

The two lights in the clock are both red. "Side Stand" blinks up when cranking the engine (the side stand switch is removed) but the other has never seemed to work.

From where the heck is my Savage come from to have such a strange speedo? Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

What year of manufacture is the bike?

If you're not sure look at the wheels, they have a date stamped on the rims.

It's a 1991 LS 650 F. My tank is special, too... It has a hump in the middle in the line of the speedo.

The speedo is a pre 1991, probably '86 or 87 . Does it have miles and kilometers for speed? The tank I have never seen before. The owner did a nice modification on the tank or the tank is from another bike. Like to see more pictures of the bike.

Here you are, chief. Sorry for the dirt on the bike, but I had no time to clean 'er up yet.

Wide drag bar with turn signals on the ends (Highway Hawk):

Pictures of the humpy tank:

Teardrop taillight (Hella, I guess):

Speedo (only km/h):

Front fork (with 4 inches plus):

Turn-out muffler (Lu Hao, totally hollow)

The bike has 5 gears but a guy in  a Suzuki shop said that the frame is 1986. I guess it had a "heart transplant". :)

Thanks for the pictures. Some became clear to me.

The dragbar is not Suzuki, the risers are, but are fitted in reverse. Looking at the brake pump this is a model that was fitted from '86 to '88.

The tank is a nice piece of homework, very well done, not Suzuki.

The speedo is European and from '87-'88, later models have 2 blinker indicator lights, left and right. The middle is the "High Beam" and  the "Neutral" light  in the bottom LH corner.
The blinking of the sidestand light is probably a bad connection. When the sidestand switch is removed the wires should be connected to each-other to make the system work.

The turnout muffler is an aftermarket, maybe BMS.

So your bike should have 4 gears. Your mechanic mentioned the "transplant"of the engine having 5 gears and he is right.

Have a look at the date, stamped in the wheel-rims and you have the manufacturing date of the bike.

Hope this helps your quest to the origin of your bike.

Hey I have always wondered, what is the speed light just to the right of neutral?  I have never seen it go on.

Accoording the Clymer wiring diagrams it was only connected on the 1986 models. Indicates the the sidestand is down.

I wonder how hard it would be to put a low fuel indicator there...

Thanks for the useful information it helped a lot.

The risers are fitted this way because the former owner was about 6' 5".  Maybe it was more comfy for him this way. I like this setup, too.

There are some things to fix on the bike, for example some oil leakage on the alternator side, clutch is slipping - must put in some washers and change the plates, HD Sportster muff should be installed because this turn-out is a "killer" and some electric problems (strator must be repaired, I have only 13 volts because of a short circuit down there).
I hope it will be in perfect condition soon, its just the question of money. :)

Thanks again!

PS: I'm sorry, Lancer. I don't know what the problem could be. I have been using this webspace for a year and never met this kind of bugs. Apologies.
