Title: Possible starter malfunction
Post by savagenewbie on 08/15/06 at 20:31:04

I'm not sure if my starter has just burned out on my 96 savage, but it doesn't make any sound at all to start when clutch is in and I hit the starter button, can some one tell me where i should check before calling a shop

So your sure you have a good battery?
Do you have lights?
Do you get a click from the decompress solenoid when you hit the button?

Check the fuses and the interlock switch at the kick stand - infamous little switch there - fairly straight forward to by pass and find out

Key on, kickstand up, clutch lever in, kill-switch (red toggle by throttle, right handlebar) off.  Always one of those for me.
If not check battery negative and fuse.
Good luck and welcome,

Mine has never failed but I'm about ready to bypass it just on principle.

you know neither of these has either but I'm sure ready to at the least sign of it giving me trouble - seems it comes loose or moves on people so the stand doesn't trip it correct - one whimper out of it and it's gone!

Yes I have good battery lights work well, there is a clicking when I hit the starter. key is on,  kill switch is in proper position, have tried with kickstand up and down.  I usually start it with kickstand down in neutral, clutch is pulled in too.

if it clicks when you hit the button seems you could rule out the interlocks switches - what voltage is on that battery? Clean terminals?

Having experienced similar problem recently, I'm curious, did you experience any noticeable signs of excessive cranking to start before this happened?

In my case, first noticed some extensive cranking to start, followed shortly thereafter by crank, crank, clik, clik, clik of the starter---then nothing.  Pulled out the Clymer manual and after verifying the starter relay was the culprit, replaced it, bike started fine---that is about 2 or 3 times.  Then, no cranking, just cliking of the relay.  Battery checked out fine, electrical connections seemingly good.  I decided to take it in to a pro and am waiting to hear back---I'm betting it was a starter motor problem which then led to  the relay failing.  I'll post a follow up when I get some news.

The starter motor is fairly easy to remove and reinstall.  Take it out and hook it up to a 12V source and see if it spins.  Be careful, though, it spins a lot!  And something about conservation of angular momentum?   ;)

Like what kind of 12V source, and exactly how do I connect it?

also where might I find the relay switch just so I can check it too

Yep, hold on, good!  or better yet, put it on the floor.

The bike's battery should work as a source, assuming it is in good condition.

Now, how to hook it up.  Maybe someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but:

red/hot/positive  goes to the little plug on top.  black/ground goes to any metal part of the case; it's grounded to the engine.

Where does the starter relay live?  uh, see this thread in the tech section (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1099317926)

You may have to download the images to zoom in on them enough to read them.

ok problem solved......I'm new with these motorcycles, and didn't think of the fuse.  Sure enough it was blown, thanks for everyones suggestions.  Now I've got a fuel problem simply from taking the darn tank off, somethings blocking my fuel.....finding lots of info on here, I'll piece things together.   I hope.

Make sure you have the vacuum line attached properly.

yep I do now, didn't even realize it was there, cause I never purposley disconnected it, it just popped off as we lifeted the tank up.  Thanks for the info, saved me probably a few hundred bucks going to deal with a shop.

Follow up to my earlier description of the symptoms I was having that relate to this thread:

My starter motor apparently went out (after 2500 miles on a 2001) causing my relay to go as well.

Any thoughts or experiences out there that might explain why the zook-starter would die with seeming little use or should I just chaulk it up to being of "lucky"?
