Title: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Jimsey67 on 01/15/07 at 11:52:41 Hi Friends, I have found most of the mods to my bike now but have found one I can't figure out and it appears to be a bad one. Can anyone tell me what the spacer sizes on the rear axle should be? The rear brake housing swing arm lock looks to be in the correct place on the right side and the drive belt pulley on the wheel looks to be centered under the belt guard but... Here is my problem. The wheel (tire and rim) are not centered in the frame. Or possibly it is but the fender is not mounted right (looks right to me). The right side has about 3/4" clearance from the fender and the left side has almost none. This spacing has led to some tire damage on the left sidewall of the tire from the tire hitting and rubbing on one of the sissy bar side rail bolts on the underside of the fender. I have removed the bolt in question for now to prevent further damage and the bike seems to ride true. My thoughts on this from being a bicycle mechanic for years is that the spacers are not correct on both sides and that the swing arm may be compressed or that the spoke offset on this wheel is not correct (possible new wheel but not set for this frame?). Am I way off and missing something here? Thanks for your help! Jimsey67 |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by bentwheel on 01/15/07 at 12:03:26 Relax, there is nothing wrong with your alignment. This is a common Savage complaint. You are probably running a slightly fatter tire. One solution is to stiffen up your shock springs with the preload adjuster. This will move your fender up slightly. |

Post by allan on 01/15/07 at 12:08:03 I had this on my 1st one, its was my fender, drop the lower shock mounts, reach over the wheel & undo the 4 fender bolts 2 of the holes in fender are oval to give some movement push it over where you want it and lock it up. allan. |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Savage_Rob on 01/15/07 at 12:17:27 I'm with Bentwheel. When I installed saddlebag supports, it forced the bolts closer to the tire. When I put a slightly larger tire on, it rubbed on the left side. Swapping the bolts to mushroom head allen bolts and adjusting the shock preset to its stiffest/highest position took care of it. Since I went to taller shocks, it's become irrelevant. Do you have saddlebag supports installed? What size rear tire do you have? |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Jimsey67 on 01/16/07 at 00:14:29 It is a 140x80x15 tire. Another thing... The carb has a few hoses attached to it. One is the fuel and another is a vacuum line. there are two more that are located near the bowl (one on the left and one on the right) which go to no where. That was the way it was when I acquired the bike. Where do these go? I put in an iridium plug today and set the idle mix screw at 1.5 turns (was at .5 turn). The old plug only had 300 miles on it. It had lots of soot on it. The electrode was dark brown and almost black and the ground electrode was silver on the edges and black on the top. Input? Thanks all! Jimsey67 |

Input sounds like a bit too much fuel for the air. Rich,Did you check the gap? Heat range? There are folks here who will know what heat range it was by the maker & number. The spacers on the rear axle. Guys? Are they the same length? Seems to me the left one is longer that the right. If someone got thgose backwards would it set the wheel to left side some? |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by sparkett on 01/17/07 at 12:11:09 I thought this was just odd till the carb problem, then it was just streaming gas out of them all over :o took a few to figure out where all that gas smell was coming from.Maybe i will run new ones long enough to go into the air box. leak catcher, since the cone thing is on now. |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Brendan on 01/17/07 at 12:15:56 The spacers are different sizes on each side, pull the wheel off, swap them and see how that pans out. I reckon they are in ar$e about. |

They go in the "Y" of the frame backbone under the tank. Right under this little black electrical relay. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/6972/carbshots0046qk.jpg |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Jimsey67 on 01/17/07 at 15:21:46 Hi all, How about the rich running? what should I do? (EDIT) I have taken the carb out and broke it down. The "white" spacer seems to have been replaced with three steel washers (approx 1.6mm thick in total) and the main jet is a 147.5. The pilot jet size is unknown as the stamp is too darn small for me to read (old eyes - lol). The one thing I did notice is that the float level comes in at about .975" instead of the 1.1" spec in the Clymer manual. Should I change it to 1.1"? Would that be why it is running rich and getting bad milage? (EDIT #2) It wasn't that far off. I was measuring it wrong. Jimsey67 |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by steelwolf on 01/18/07 at 20:07:19 I honestly don't think it is the petc0ck. The rich condition has got to be a mix problem. You said you have a 147.5 main and (3) washers for a "spacer" totaling 1.6mm thick. Best I remember the 147.5 main is stock jetting so that is probably not the problem. The "white spacer" being replaced is common but I think most folks go with only two washers which I would assume to be richer than your current set up. I'm not really sure how thick the "white spacer" is so I'm not sure if you are richer or leaner than stock. That leads us to air intake. What does the air filter look like? A clogged air filter could cause a richer mix. OK, I just found the stock spacer size to be around 2.8mm. That makes your 1.6mm washers richer than stock. This gives you some options depending on your exhaust and air filter combination. |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Jimsey67 on 01/18/07 at 22:21:37 It is a K&N flat filter (drop in?) and jardene exhaust. The filter appears to be clean. Jimsey67 |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Reelthing on 01/19/07 at 10:54:02 what year is this bike ? and what elevation does it live in? this is a US bike right? never mind - found it - it's a '98 - man sure doesn't seem to me you should rich at a 147.5 - came stock at 145 (i think) sounds like the petc0ck might be letting it suck gas through the vac hose - cap both and run it on pri a bit and see if you have a different situation is it backfireing? |

Title: Re: New owner - found another bad mod? Post by Jimsey67 on 01/19/07 at 18:05:29 Yes, it backfires... Sometimes so loud it scares me.... Jimsey67 |

I agree, and I have this crappy image that I cropped from another photo. You can run the axle through from the left side if you need the muffler clearance, but keep the spacers the same way. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b277/gmdinusa/RearWheel01web-1.jpg |
