Title: OOOOOHHHHHHH MAAAAAAN,
Post by john1652 on 01/19/07 at 17:36:38

Well, I need info on fork oil. I installed black rubber fork boots on the savage tonight. As I was getting ready to put the forks back in I set them up against the work bench and walked away.  Believe it or not the forks, having the tire still attached, rolled away from the work bench the minute my back was turned, after all I have done for them----- to treat me like that.  Do I need to say more????  How much oil goes in each leg???    just stock I'm not trying to change the forks feel.   thanks.   Oh by the way BTW   the boots look awsome, gives it that old old old school look.

I understand your pain on this one.  Does seem kinda silly that you have to "uncork" the forks in order to remove them from the triple tree.  Doesn't it?

I like the fork boot idea though.  Good addition.

The best assets are usually found to be female.....IMHO

I seem to recall when other  person on site was talking about taking forks out of yokes I related on old bikes I used to put gaiters on you could just take wheel & mudguard off (& in this case brakes) & stretch the gaiters over any protuberatances on fork bottoms & get gaiters on that way.

of course might not work on modern day bikes as think these were old bikes with drum brakes & they did not have the lugs on the lower fork pieces the brake caliper bolts onto (though think I fitted gaiters on a Yamaha SR500 with a single disc this way.

person who fitted gaiters the way john1652 did said this might have worked (too late for him, obviously & too late for john1652 too but might work for next person).

often fitted gaiters to bikes back home, not because of how it looked - "like an old bike" - but because they serve a really effective way of keeping dirt  from prematurely getting in fork seals (why modern Savages have those little plastic bits on the forks & you can buy little metal do-hickeys to fit on your Superbrace - don't work as well  but better than nothing.

I've thought of putting on gaiters (but don't like look) but mainly because it involves taking forks out of yokes which I've found to be a little pain, though not end of world, I'll admit - just harder than taking wheel, mudguard & brake off forks (or in my case the superbrace too, which thinking about it would likely preclude use of gaiters)

Bike mods begin with the left over parts.  I never meant to have a K&N filter until I forgot to reinstall the airbox.

I LIKE springs. I save springs from about anything getting thrown away. Have a fair collection of them. If you aren't gonna USE em, I will pay ya for em. & Pay the freight. Like Greg says, ya don't really Need em..
Thanks for sharin that. No One woulda ever known. Takes some of the sheepish feeling I get away from my projects knowing others pull such stunts.

I DID explode my battery with grinder sparks, felt like such a genius.
I do wish I coulda seen the " What the hekkkk?" look on your face when those forks started past their normal position & headed down.

That's a wonderful collection to have, you never know when someone in the neighbor hood might need a spring.  Do you only collect coil springs or does it go to leaf springs also????   And of course you know i'm only kidding -------  right????    john

Got any pics with the boots installed? I'm really interested in seeing this mod. Also, what size did you go with?

Here's one that Babbalou posted this past August in the Rubber Fork Boots thread.

If you'll go read the thread I mentioned above, Babbalou tells you where to buy them, who makes them and what part number to look for.  They also come in several colors, if I remember correctly.

here are the ones I just installed. They cost $20 on e-bay there are tons on there and they are listed for all kinds of bikes. but they are all the same measurements. Like 1  3/4  top  by  2  1/2  something like that but they fir perfect. just go to e-bay and type in rubber fork boots and it will brin em up    john

Getting back on task....the recommended way to add the proper amount of oil to the forks is to pour the fork oil into the tubes, with the springs REMOVED, until the oil is 75mm (2.95 inches) from the top of the fork tube.

I measure this distance with a steel ruler, the end being firmly attached to a large pair of vice grips (keeps me from dropping the ruler into the fork tube).

IHTH!

What angle are you supposed to hold the fork tubes, while holding the ruler, while holding the oil bottle?

sit on the work benck, leg lock on the fork.level ziptyed to tube cloths pin on ruler to set depth. oil and funnel in hands.  ;D

So, she grabs a clothespin, cuz its stout enough to hold the ruler & it's in her mental arsenal of tools. The guy who posted used vise grips, sure, works great, no slap down anywhere. just noting the different approach to solve the same problem.Had to smile reading this. I have to admit, I think I could do the job more easily after reading Sparkettes approach.
