Title: Gas Cap Question
Post by Five_Points on 01/23/07 at 11:48:24

I've been oogling over these pop up gas caps on Ebay lately. I hate the key access to our caps and like the flush look of the pop up style. If someone wants to steel my 2 gallons of gas, they can have it  ;D . Anyways, I am wondering if one of these Pop up gas caps will fit our bikes? Do we need one made for a metric cruiser, or are the threads on the caps/tanks pretty universal. They also sell vented and non vented. I'm not sure which one to get (I'd assume vented, but not sure). Anyone have some help in this subject?

Something like this:

Or even a simple low profile cap like:

They look threaded...don't think they'll work.  The Savage has 2 little tabs that retain the cap.

nuts. I knew that. It just kinda locks in place with the tabs. Oh well. Worth a try. Maybe I'll just use a ducktape flap!  ;D

What you would need to do is remove the complete gasoline filler assembly and replace it with a new complete assembly.  All that would matter is that the new assembly be no smaller than the hole left by the stock (can always enlarge the hole, harder to shrink)

Putting quick release gas in Google Images came up with several possibles, none like the gasoling filler on my '67 Spitfire -- hit the release, cap flips back, fill, slap cap down, go!  Back then it was pay the attendent.  I could pull up to the pump, start filling, hand over $2, stop filling and be off in under a minute.  Usually when I was late for work.

You know...if the inside diameter is the same those might work in the Savage despite the two tabs for the locking cap.  I've thought about this myself since I don't like the way the stock cap seals...

Man, sometimes mine seems to air up in the tank & just pump gas out as soon I start the thing. I am sure I get it a bit above the lip in there, but , sheesh, not that high up to make it just pump the gas out. Maybe this is a result of the vac leak  at the carb & somehow pressure going INTO the tank when I start it?

I don't like the way the stock cap seals...  Oh yea, I witchya all the way.

Is this what your talking about?

Quote:
The Speedster cap attaches to the tank with eight 10-32 machine screws (included). You can fabricate your own mounting base, or purchase one of ours, they are available in both steel and aluminum. Gaskets are also available separately.
The speedster gas cap is available immediately for $239.95, plus shipping

If so...Yikes!!!  That's like...4 rear tires for my steed!  I said I was annoyed with my gas cap, not that my gas cap was about to kill and eat me  ;D

I was thinking something more along the lines of this:

Thirty Quid.

Mine did the same thing one time. Not once I started it, but when I took it off the side stand and stood it up vertically, it started pumping out a bit. I figured I just overfilled a bit and when I stood it up, it got suctioned out the cap. Only had that happen once (so far)
