Title: I have a quick question on a muffler change
Post by Jodicline on 01/28/07 at 01:29:54

I have a Savage 650 and my husand just took the muffler off and replaced the bottom pipe with a cherry bomb, really like the sound of it but how do we know if it's running lean. I have a 95 Savage.

Just upgraded from my first bike rebel to a savage and I love this bike, going to do lots of changing to bike.. hopefully into a bobber bike when its done.

Take Care and hope to get some feedback on the cherry bomb

Cant fiqure how to load pics so go to myspace page listed on here and see pics

Well, unless someone has changed the jet on that thing I would be willing to bet it's runnin way lean. Is it backfiring? Little muffled rumbles or hard"gunshot" style blasts? Mine just crackles a bit on decel, sounds like a hotrod. Used to sound like a gun till I upped the main jet. These things aregenerallyjetted lean from the factory, depending on year model. there were some years with stock 150 main jets. I dunno which they are.

Your 95 should need to be rejeted unless it has been done already. What kind of muffler did your husband take off? You didn't specify so I assume that it was the stock one. If it was the stock muffler chances are that it has not been rejeted. Also too you will need to do something to the white spacer. Whether it be shave it down or replace it with washers this will richen the bike in the areas that the factory negleted due to the EPA regulations. That needs to be done even without the rejet.

Is that Cherry Bomb a bright red color too?

well this is matt. jodi's husband
i did the work thusfar on the bike, i removed the stocker, and put a good ol cherry bomb on it, tuned it with a bit of backpresure, and richened up the low side a bit, somone had already removed the brass plug for it and also had removed the white spacer completly, it surges a bit at speed but im suspecting a rear brake or trans problem, other then that it runs fine, the noise, well it is loud, very loud when you give it throttle, it backfires a bit when you let off the gas but no more, and it has a real raspy pop to the strock when accelerating,
matt

yea, i tried the turnout straight to the downpipes, but it was too loud so i put it on the back of the cherry bomb,
makes a nice leaf blower heh?

From my limited experience, that description sounds like it's running a safe enough mix. Have fun, good looking bike,,

That muffler sounds very free flowing (loud). I'd put a 157.5 main jet in it and a white spacer shaved down to 1/2 thickness. You'll be too rich in the midrange with no white spacer.

Hi Matt, I was planning on doing a Cherry Bomb on my '95 also. Do you know what model Cherry bomb? Inlet outlet diameters?  How easy was it mounting? What type of clamps? What did you do to tune back pressure? Sorry for all the questions, I can't seem to find or see the pics. Thanks.

hey, thanks for the comments, yes it does seem to be running rich either low or midrange, but i cant adjust it out on the low side, so i think if i can find the pics of the spacer off somone elses savage, i could make a new one and shave it down, but since it was removed already i have no clue of the orientation of it in the carb or the size, but i think that alone would make it run much cleaner and more fuel effecient too,

about the cherry bomb, i knew if people liked the cost and benifit, somone would be asking what and where to get it so i saved the box end,
at advance or autozone you can ask to go in the back and look throught the glasspacks(cherry bombs) to find the correct size, or just call them and ask if they have part number 87021 cherry bomb muffler, sku 0 43645 00380 7
it is a 1-7/8" inlet angled slightly and 1-3/4" outlet angled slightly, overall lenth 22-9/16"
the prefinished red burns off quick and stink, so i sanded down to bare metal and repainted it with 1200deg red, but that is burning off too on the inlet, and so i would say it should be either left raw, powdercoated, or chromed.

i tuned it with backpressure by cutting two 1.5" slits about 3/4" apart up from the outlet and bending that small 3/4" by 1.25" or so peice down into the path of the exuast gasses, then the chrome turndown is a 8 dollar screw on from autozone and it hides the tuning, part and also cuts down a bit on that wrapping sound under hard throttle,
the brackets i made by hand, i bought a 3' peice of steel band about 5/8" to 3/4" wide by 1/8" thick, wrapped it around the flange and casing and used a drill to make bolt holes, bought a 1" long 1/4" bolt 2 washers, lockwasher and nut for the clamp, and a 3/8" by 1" bolt, washer and nylon locknut for the mount, and bolt that to one of the two factory mount points, that had a rubber grommet already,
it all went together with pretty basic tools, i used a dremel to cut things but you could use anything even a hacksaw,

any other ???s feel free to ask, i will try to get pics up soon min more detail if requested,
matt

oh and i painted the bracket and clamp to match the muffler,
makes them hid a bit

You can order a new one from the Suzuki dealer. Just sand it down on a flat surface with some fine sandpaper. There's some good pictures in the Tech section on how it all fits together.
