Title: Vroom's New Bars (pics)+ miscellaneous
Post by vroom1776 on 03/28/07 at 11:32:21

Hey gang!  Finally got my engine back in (well, 2 months ago), the bike rewired, and everything is happy!   ;D

Vroomette made ::) me get new bars instead of the drag bar I was running... to hard on my upper back... So here are some pics (sorry Perry, nothing TOO saucy!)...

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g152/vroom1776/PICT0020.jpg

yeah, I'm not the best photographer (sorry greg!)... my camera no longer focuses, and the zoom feature is broken...

So the apes are about 8" tall, and they put my hands right at my shoulders... very easy steering... stock length cables, too, but I had to route them carefully.  I still need to adjust the throttle cable a little, as when I turn the bars all the way to the right, it opens the throttle a bit...

Next pic:

Anyway, You can see my new starter button right above the lead on the battery!  Fun!  I've only belted myself once so far...  You can also see the braket I made for the clutch perch... the stock one, which was part of the case, broke off when the engine came out (we were struggling [read: drunk as skunks], then the bike fell over, and the engine fell out).  Also, you can see the M16 (sorry, I forgot the pitch, Dagnabbit!) nut I had a cap welded onto to close up the speedo cable hole.

What's left of the wiring:

If you look past the carb, you can see I have all of 5 wires running along the left side of the frame.  2 for the coil, 2 for the Decomp solenoid, and 3 (inside the heat shrink) for the headlight (common ground).  That equals 5.  ::)

Now, since I have not adjusted my decomp sol and the bike keeps starting fine, and the nuts keep rattling loose anyway, I may just remove it and see how it goes.  Since it's a 97, it has all the good stuff in the case to keep the starter from breaking like the 86s...

Oh, and I am also going to rebuild USGCerams' old brake caliper and MC and stick it on mine... My pops (Vroom Sr) bought his bike (86), on which the MC & caliper were trashed, so I gave him mine...

Is there any interest in a tech. sect. article on "How to Rebuild your brake caliper and MC?"

V

thanks!

nope!  the drag bars were dead flat and had no pullback (it was a steel pipe I found), and I was bent way over... no problems now...   and the way the seat is mounted, there's a bit of spring in it... I'm not fat enough yet to permanently bend it...

I like it! Kinda got that weird desert mutant guy look. Mad Max in Thumper-Dome. Dig the seat and tail light. What did you make your rear struts out of?

steel  rebar I found in my garage (about 0.9" diameter), and 1" OD solid steel pipe for the eyelets.  10.25" long hole to hole, 14 mm ID mount holes, 18mm wide.

Hey Vroom, thanks for the pics. Are you running any baffles in that cherry bomb? Could you put a sound file up on the site, I'd love to hear how that fat pipe sounds.

your bike looks pretty wild judging from photos - is the chain to stop it from escaping, or what?!  ;D

Rogue,

Well, it's a cherry bomb, so... no.  A cherry bomb is a baffle, sort of.  Basically, it is straight through, but where it widens, the inside pipe is perforated, and those holes lead to fiberglass.  Cherry bombs are sometimes known as glass packs.  Some have the perforations with a preferred direction, like a cheese grater.  This particular one does not.  I bought it for $20.  It is 1.75" ID.  That's why I got it.  Also, it is 17" long, but the wide part is onlyh 14" long.  I forget what the ID is there.  To add some "backpressure," I drilled a hole, welded a nut over the hole, and stuffed a big thumbscrew into the pipe at the end.  I then added another nut and red lcotite.  It has never fallen off.  I do not really know how much this helps, but an olditmer tells me it does and says I can change the exhaust note by changing the size of the thumbscrew.  Also, cops can't stuff their nightsticks up there.  It fits perfecly onto the stock exhaust bracket.  There are some exhaust leaks I never bothered getting rid of.  It backfires and spits flame nicely almost every time I let off the throttle, but jsut gives a little "poot" on shtdown, which is disapointing.

Very cool!  8) Those apes give your Bike a "Cruel Cruiser" kinda look! Wicked!
I'll bet grannies cringe in fear and mommas hold their youngsters close and look away when you Ride by on your Savage!

Hey G&C!  I think I'm still supposed to come up for a visit!

The chain is mostly for looks!    ::)  but hopefully, it will help to keep it in my possesion.

yeah, it is wild... a lot of fun to ride.  for a 5'8" guy, it's pretty comfy... handles great... very light, easy to pick up ::)  Vroom Sr says it's a blast to ride for about 45 minutes...

Anyway...

I'm having a BBQ Sat, April 7, down in Fort Collins.  Wanna come for a vist?  I think TC should come too!
