Title: My Mods... Post by jk on 02/17/08 at 15:00:24 I hate to start a new thread, but I don't want to detract from anyone else's spotlight... http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/02/17/bikepics-1187374-full.jpg Ought to be able to put it back in the frame tomorrow. I'll put up some more picts then... |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 02/19/08 at 03:57:30 I've got it back in the frame and almost running- ran out of beer before I could get to the camera... :'( Also, the tool fairy visited my garage and stole my d@mn chain tool. >:( |
|
Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 02/19/08 at 07:56:47 Yeah, someone has been in my garage- I'm missing my chain tool, a jigsaw, various hand tools, a drill, and some pruning shears. Pruning shears... Who in the he11 steals pruning shears? The only thing I can figure is I had the overhead door open while in the back yard and somebody walking by took the opportunity... Bunch of savages... and not the good kind. And the stealership is d@mn proud of their chain tools. Anyway, a picture... http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/02/19/bikepics-1189168-full.jpg |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Gary On A Savage on 02/19/08 at 15:47:49 Nice! Must post more pics! I love the green frame. What's the color of your tins now? And how did you paint your engine? Love to see a pic after 6 months... Your fins seemed to have lost some color between the last pics. Did you paint them black or is that just old oil build up showing ;D |
|
Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 02/19/08 at 16:17:58 I sanded the edges of the fins, then decided I didn't like it, wrapped some freezer paper around everything else and shot a little more paint. It's some flat black 1200-degree header/engine paint. It's actually a fairly thin coat- the case already had some corrosion on it that made it look a bit darker than normal. I used the same paint on the muffler and after the 1,000 miles I was able to put on it before the cam chain went, it still looks great. The tins (and swing arm) are a semi-gloss black. I should have them back on tomorrow. All I need to do after that is wire up the tail lights and finish the speedo (and remount the seat) and I should be ready to roll. I promise more picts tomorrow. |

I had the can painted and done, but I was having problems with the mounting and assembly. I'm going to make a sleeve for it out of the same vinyl I covered the seat with. I've never had any luck with painting plastics... |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 03/01/08 at 07:40:34 Thanks! I was going to do some more work on it this morning, but... I am a lazy b@stard. ;) All that is left is to cover the new seat & speedo housing, finish the electronics & new dash panel, and... that's about it. Oh, and the ammo cans that will serve as saddle bags. |
|
Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Savage Chick on 03/13/08 at 16:37:16 I wanna see pics when you've got the ammo cans on!! |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by greyhead51 on 03/13/08 at 18:28:07 would love to do the seat mod that you have done. what problems, if any, did you come across. where did you get the seat, springs etc. thanks and God bless...greyhead51 |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 03/14/08 at 06:45:39 Thanks guys- I've been down with the flu and bronchitis for the past week- I haven't come within five feet of the garage in that time. Very frustrating, since I'm so close to being done. I will put up picts of the cans when I get them mounted, as well as the seat mods, hopefully in the next few days. |

Post by jk on 03/24/08 at 19:01:39 http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/03/24/bikepics-1229241-full.jpg Almost done- just need to verify the decomp adjustment, put the carb and battery back in, figure out something for the massive hole where the speedo used to be and then we'll be cooking with gas... Not too sure if I like the seat, even after the trouble I went through getting the springs. And the dude I bought a top clamp from for the risers won't respond to my emails about shipping... >:( |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by verslagen1 on 03/24/08 at 20:08:32 Some of those ebotch dudes are once a week workers. Had a complaint once, emailed the store, once a week for a couple of weeks then gave them a negative after a month for failure to get back to me after sale. That got their attention. |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Hutch on 03/30/08 at 08:34:51 JK, hope your feeling better and the weather starts to cooperate soon. If I remember correctly, you have a 17/43 chain conversion. If your speedo is not calbated for the conversion, remember that below 50mph(indicated) it reads about 5mph slow. From 50 mph(indicated) it is 10mph slow. 50=60,60=70, and so on. Cool looking bike. Have fun. and let us know what you think of the chain conversion. So far everyone has liked my idea. You can always drop to a 16 front for more acceleration. Hutch |

Title: D@mmit, d@mmit, D@mmit!!! Post by jk on 03/30/08 at 13:16:24 Of course, I put the oil in? Leak. Pulled the right side cover off? The gasket somehow got folded... Of course, it's soaked with oil, torn, unusable. Sometimes, I amaze myself with my sometimes eff ups... Anyway, I just ordered two, express shipping from bikebandit... Next weekend, I guess... >:( |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Rockin_John on 03/31/08 at 01:02:18 That last picture of your bike is just outstanding! The bike makes a statement. To me it says: "I was built by a rider, and meant to be ridden!" I'd ride that bike with pride. Although I'd have to ditch the broomstick bars for some with a little rise and pullback. My wrists just can't deal with the straight flat bars. |

Thanks! I appreciate the compliments! I don't know if you can see 'em in the picture too well, but I did put some 4 1/2" pull-back risers on it and the bars do have some bend to 'em. I sit pretty much upright this time. The last configuration (wth the stock risers and broomstick) made me want to cry after an hour in the saddle. If I could just get past amateur hour with the gasket, I'd be showing it off all over the place! :D |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 03/31/08 at 16:25:27 At 5:27:02, she fired up on the first pop of the starter switch... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3262/2378806982_79596aca90.jpg Me and Eileen after a brief shakedown run. I'll go over all the nuts and bolts tomorrow morning, and hopefully the weather will cooperate... |

I absolutely love the conversion. I do have the 16/43- lot's of zip out of the gate and very smooth on the top end. Previously, I'd get it up around 65 and it felt like it was pretty much wrapped out (or at least sounded wrapped out) Yesterday, we were cruising along at what my speedo said was 55. At the next stop, my buddy told me we were actually doing 65. Which made me really happy, 'cause Eileen still had a long way to go before she hit the wall, relative to the belt drive. I do need to rejet/adjust the carb, though. Since I cleaned out the engine and did the conversion, she's running fairly rich now. And too, I get it running? The forcast for the next ten days..? Frog-choking t-storms... Figures. :P |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Hutch on 04/01/08 at 14:49:37 JK, I know what you mean about the weather. 2 days ago I went for a ride when it got to 40. It rained cats and dogs yesterday and today the temp went from 49 at 9 oclock down to 29, with a low of 19 late tonight. It didn't matter about the temp. The wind has been gusting to 45mph all day. Glad you like the conversion to chain. It puts a lot less stress on the motor at high speed, and still comes off the line real nice. Hope the weather changes for you soon. Great job on the bike!! Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 04/01/08 at 15:35:04 Thanks, Hutch! I'm really looking forward to getting out there on the road & showing it off. I've only got 32 days until my road trip all over Texas & I'd like to get her fine-tuned before then. It's supposed to clear up a bit on Sunday and Monday, which works out fine since I'm off those days, but I really want to start riding it to work again. I can deal with getting wet on the way home, it's just the trip in where my options are limited. (Nowhere to change without attracting a lawsuit- I luv corporate America :D) |

Title: A better picture of Eileen... Post by jk on 04/02/08 at 07:19:19 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2128/2382958268_4d1b1fe080_b.jpg 1987 Suzuki Savage.
Amount paid for bike: $1200 Amount put into bike: I never totalled it up... ...The joy is well worth it. |

Title: Re: My Mods... Post by Rockin_John on 04/02/08 at 13:13:23 Yes indeed, I see now that you DO have just enough rise and pullback on the bars to make it comfortable. As I mentioned, the straight "broomstick" bars just don't work for me. Can't stand the torque on my wrists. I even use an ergonomic keyboard on the computer because my wide shoulders make it near impossible to type on a conventional keyboard. |
|
Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 04/02/08 at 15:28:35 On top of nearly breaking my back a few years ago, I used to wind coils for a living, electrical transformers... My wrists and fingers are still jacked up from manipulating 1 and 2 ga wire. I did have a broomstick on there for about three days and decided that even though it looked d@mn cool, the pain wasn't worth it. I'm not 20 and made of rubber. :P |
|
Title: Re: My Mods... Post by jk on 04/07/08 at 03:45:47 After that 158 mile run yesterday, I'm dropping the saddle bags and putting the bobbed fender back on. At 70 miles an hour, those cans create an awefull lot of drag and instability. Me and the bike together only weigh 500 lbs. For my upcoming trip, I'm just going to use a backpack. I'm only packing three days worth of clothes anyway. |
