Title: Spark plug dosent have a spark. Post by Jmk0420 on 04/08/08 at 17:48:34 Man..... I bought this crappy 87 that needed a motor. So i bought an 05 engine. I've been posting diffrent things here an there so you might of read one or two of my posts and know this already, so i put the engine on and hooked everything up. I find out the kick stand wire to cut the engine off is cut so i got a new one just havent put it on though. Anyway i figured id try'n starter up today just to see if all the work i put into this thing was worth it, and not a thing happens. I mean the lights come on and i can tell im in neutral but nothin else. So then i realize the guy before me pulled the darn wires commin out of the "Run/Off" switch out of the front brake lever. Hmmmm.... I have a manuel....but still dont know why the wires to run the bike need to be connected to the brake. So i try jumpin the bike by hookin the battery jumper up to the starter but nothin happens, it starts chuggin but dosent kick over....find out that the spark plug dosent spark. Probley cause the run switch. Is there a way to by-pass the kickstand kill switch and fix the darn run switch wires. LONG POST...but im thinkin this electrical stuff might be outta my leage. I thought plug-n-play right? If you guys have anything for me it would be cool. Also thanks for taking the time ta read this Long post. |

Sorry if sounds dumb, but maybe it will jog an idea.... first, there are several wires going to the right handle control. Run/Kill switch, Starter button switch and brake light switch. Brake light swtch wire comes out and goes to a "micro" switch that clicks when you throw the lever. Is that connected? Run / Kill switch, (took a while to find in the book) needs to be a "closed" switch so that power goes to the ign circiut. This is a little backwards from some older bikes that use it to ground out the IGN circiut. Starter button, uses the power from the run switch (hint hint) to feed down into the other interlocks to let the bike start. SO.... does this help???? I think you will need to take the two screws off the controller and look inside........ |

I took the two screws off of the brake lever ,where the Orange and White wires that were comming out of the kill switch should have gone. And theres a little oval piece where they were souldered on. under that theres a little copper thing with a spring behind it which pushes on the pice where the wires were souldered on. Im not sure how that works(wierdest switch ive seen). I actually soldered two new wires onto the pice and tried splicing them together. But it didnt work. The new wires were a tiny bite thicker though. Im thinkin that even if this switched worked would the kick stand kill switch hurt me. Plus the reason the new kick stand wire is not on is because i cant find the place to hook it up. There are two wires on the side of my bike which i think is where it should go. But the pieces dont line up. Same color wire and everything. Maybe diffrent years had diffrent connecters. And my fault if this post makes me look like an idiot, but i just want this thing to work. Ive actually hooked up a bunch of electrical stuff up.....just my first time with a bike....Thanks man. |

Post by Reelthing on 04/08/08 at 18:55:34 For sure you need to work through the starting circuit - likely if you just put power to the starter motor it can't turn over because the decompression solenoid didn't open - the kickstand switch shouldn't keep it from starting if the neutral switch and clutch switch are both working did you use the cdi box from the '05? |

Post by thumperclone on 04/08/08 at 19:07:20 you say you havent installed the side stand sw yet that sw must be closed also(just back to ground) if you have the suzuki service manual lok at pages 9-12 to 9-14 for the 87 sidestand igntion interlock system..tells you how to trouble shoot all those components with an ohm meter...good luck!! let us know what you find... |

EDIT: side stand switch connects under the seat..... |

Gotta work in the morning which means i might not have time ta spend with the bike.... I dont have the 05' cdi box but i have one one the way. I read that it would just backfire if you didnt have the right one in (jus wanted to hear her fire up not run it round the block or anything). But im gonna read through the manuel and figure some stuff out tonight. If you guys wanna throw your thoughts at me i appreciate it, so ill keep you posted thanks. |

It sounds like you just powered the starter moter with the battery charger which will power the starter but not the rest of the ignition system. I'm working through electrical first while trying to get my '87 project bike started and did the same thing ;) Power the bike normally, pull the clutch and see if you have spark again. |

I jumped the hot wire( single red wire on rear fender) to one of the wires on the decomp solenoid timer, Cant remember which now. But, the current is so low that a micr switch from the face of a dead DVD player has handled the load for 2 years. I can bump the switch, its strapped to the fram under the front edge of the seat, protected from weather by a double "finger" off a nitrile glove. You can look at the schematic & do the same, bypassing all interlocks & it will start if the key is on. It will crank, key off. |
