Title: Locking up your bike......
Post by Hell, Billy on 04/17/08 at 16:29:19

Hi,

I wonder what everybody is doing to secure their rides-I know the Savages are the least stolen bike in the USA, but why tempt fate?

Are you using the [unreliable] fork lock, a disc lock, a chain, alarms? Big mean doggies?

Hey?

Bill

Nope.  I park it and walk away.  If someone wants to steal it, let them.  I'm insured and all my customization is covered too....

Besides, you have to be pretty hard up to jack a bike with an MSRP of 4 grand.....

Do you mean while youre out for a ride.......or if youre going to leave it parked outside overnight/plus?

About six feet of chain with a padlock.  But usually I don't bother.

At home Thumper gets locked up in the garage, at work he's in an inside garage, shopping he's usually parked next to the building.

on tour he was chained down every night

Here in Moses Lake I usually just pull the key and drop the helmet/silks and gloves in the unlocked trunk and do whatever chores I have and it is always there when I come back. Out of town I do lock the fork and carry a fork lock that I use. Moses Lake is still country enough that most of the farm PU's have the keys in them in front of the tractor/auto parts/ bearing/hydraulic shop place. I only pull the key on the '04 Colorado PU consistently as it was special order and it would take months to replace it. Our other 2  88 MY vehicles (GMC PU and Astro Van) have the key in them except when we are out of town. I'll bet I could borrow a vehicle from 90% of the farms here if needed as most have the keys in them. We have a couple little noisy dogs and a big lab, plus a couple debarked little ones so anyone or thing is announced.  Savage gets garaged every night but the garage is often unlocked as is the OH door. BIg city or someplace I wasn't sure of I'd do everything I could to make sure it was there when I came back.

Well, I guess I`ll just keep on leaving that rubber snake on my seat, then.

Locked up in my garden shed when I'm at home - private parking lot when I'm at work - It's fully insured, so if someone is that hard up.....  I'll get more than what I paid for it back.

Mine's a '96 so you have to be pretty jacked up to take it, and I wouldn't stop them, I'll just phone it in with a picture.

I treat it like I want to keep it, but I wont be sweating it.When I park in parking lots that have security cameras, I park with one aimed at it. Otherwise, I get off & walk away, no fork lock er nuthin. I'll be back in a few. IF I am leaving it overnight, like a couple O weeks ago, when it had a flat, I applied the fork lock & ent hom,e. At home, its in the shop, all nice & cozy. I am more concerned about a cat hetting on it & clawing the seat than I am theft.

Rode my to school yesterday at Love Field in Dallas, accidentally left keys in it until lunch. It was still there(WHEW).But then again I have a little reputation there about not messing with my stuff ;).

At home it's in the garage,  at work in the company parking deck.

I understand your concern.   I always wonder when I pull into the Wally world lot.   I've have seen some people there....  :P   So I lock the fork.  I figure if there are dumb enough to want to take my bike, they are also too dumb to figure out the lock.

A real bike thief will look at the bike and think....  I can't get anything for it let me look for a HD or sport bike.   The "Kids" looking for a joy ride will think the same.....

Note: I live in the "megalopolis" of the east coast.  Bike theft is a real thing here..... yes, I would miss my LS650 if it was stolen..... I do worry...

I've never worried too much about theft with any of my vehicles.  I have a short enough attention span to a vehicle that I would see theft as an excuse to get another one.  I've never experienced a theft though.

I read a sad tale some years ago, an old man in New York city had had a couple of cars stolen, was broke & out of "heart" for more troubles. He went out to get in his car & it was gone. It was more than he could bear & he jumped to his death from the parking garage. Later, it was found parked on a lower level from where he THOUGHT it was. I wonder if he saw it on his way down? ( I can be SOOO mean!)

I would guess he saw it on the way down, and called it a few names.

I use a Kryptonite disc lock that I've had for 15 years.  When I bought the bike, the guy didn't have the fork lock key (of course), and he only had one ignition key.  I doubt anybody would steal this bike, but you never know these days.

i install bike alarms the local harley suzuki dealer sells...

i love my job. but seriously a bike alarm? something goes off when someone is stealing your bike?
what a waste

if someone really wants your ride they will take it.. whether it be loading it into an el camino, alarm blaring... or cut the chain and then loading it into the el camino.

i think a chain is your best protection though..

Your criticism is greatly appreciated.     #@! you very much.
Seriously though, the alarm I got is a cheap, small, simple to install deterrent.  Nothing makes a bike theft proof.  I just try to make it less tempting.  In many cases, it only has to be less tempting than the next bike.

Seriously, if someone wants your bike they'll take it.  The object is to make your bike less wanted than the one next to it.  And really, some 10 speeds are worth more than my bike.  But not to me!  If a piercing alarm devalues your bike enough to make it not wanted even by the lowest of low, then I'd get one.
But security is peace of mine, it does rattle mine to park it, pull the key and walk away knowing any four fools can throw it in the back of a truck and go.   >:(

I use 1/4 inch steel cable, attached  to a "Club" lock that goes high on the frame. By mounting the lock high, I reduce the odds that it can be beaten with a hammer or pried with a bar.  I park in a public lot all day - it's near a beach and a museum with plenty of foot trafic and security cameras (yay big brother!).

A professional thief with the right tools will not be denied, but any lock/chain combo should discourage  wannabe crooks.

My biggest concern is children playing on the machine while I'm at work. I'm concerned that it can tip over and injure someone. Yes the bike would also be damaged, but I can fix that - and have fun doing it. The un-fun part is that there could be some 10 year old boy with a cast on his leg all summer long - that would SUCK!  I should do something.

Several times I've returned to the bike to find a) turn signals engaged; b) kill switch engaged; c) high beams; d) bike is in 5th gear.

I'm currently thinking ways to better stabilize the bike to prevent injury to naughty children who like to sit on motorcycles. They are one of us :-)

Post by verslagen1 on 04/19/08 at 08:40:15

I'd make the bike less appealing to sit on, a cover.  The half covers would do.
If you lock your bike to something, set the chain in a way to prevent tipping.

My new (to me) Savage is parked either in my garage behind a 140 pound rotweiller/mastiff cross, or about ten feet from my desk on the other side of a window (I'm drooling over it even as I write  :)), about a half-block from the Sheriff's office, which uses our driveway as a back entrance. I think that it's reasonably secure.

I don't have a garage at my apartment so I use:
a thick plastic covered cable (harder to cut) with a contractor masterlock (solid piece of metal).
a disk brake lock.
Alarm with two way pager.  (So I know when something happens).
Fork Lock.
Cover (as long as it hasn't been raining, I'm afraid of mold and mildew)

I don't live in the best part of town.  Every car in the lot was broken into and vandalized untill they got to mine. When the alarm went off and the light in the window came on they scattered.

Ohio State has motorcycle parking spots all over campus in visible areas close to class buildings.  I've never had a problem there.  Most of the time forget to turn the alarm on.

You could say its over kill on my part.  I just say I'm paranoid.  This is my only form of transpo.

I have that problem every time that I rent a car. I'm easy to spot. I'm the idiot out in the mall parking lot clicking his door remote and listening for the horn.  :-[

At home at night the Thumper is locked in the garage.  At work it is under a camera and I lock the forks.  At Wally-World I lock the forks.  The only time I leave the keys in it, is when we (PGR) are on a "mission", then there are a lot of HDs and large touring bikes there, so I don't think anyone would be interested in a 4K bike.
One thing I never leave on the bike is the "brain bucket" (once again, except on a PGR mission).  Here in Mississippi there is a helmet law, and I couldn't go any place without it.

What about motels? Do you all  take locks with you then? My nutty best friend who used to ride, insists I have to get a ground floor room and haul it in the room. ?????

I said she was nuts. But I do have to travel this summer and will be staying in motels and I'm a little nervous about someone making off with it in the middle of the night.

The manager will throw you out most likely.

get a cable lock and secure it to a post or something.

get an alarm will ease your mind about watching it all the time.

Title: Re: Locking up your bike......

On my OKC trip I had about six feet of chain and a padlock.  Chain has a ring on the end so you can pass the chain around something, thru the ring, snug it down, and lock the other end to the bike.  Always chain around something that you cannot lift the chain off (fire hydraunt bad!.)  On the bike end the chain went thru the front wheel and the frame.

Usually locked up right outside the door.  The one night I had a second floor room I wheeled the outside staircase and chained to that.

You cannot stop a professional thief.  When my GS450 was stolen a witness said he unlocked the forks, hopped on, put a key in the ignition and rode off.  You can stop the joyriders and the semi-pros.

As someone else said -- it is not so much securing the bike as making other bikes to be easier targets.  About the only thing worth stealing on a Savage are the side covers -- those things fetch huge prices.

would a U lock through the front rim and key out of ignition be sufficient for parking outside of apartment complex every night?  Near UF campus, descent neighborhood, all kids...

Title: Re: Locking up your bike......
Post by NDBiker on 04/20/08 at 21:08:00

If you can get a Ulock big enough go for it.  Frame instead of rim is your best bet though if that's all you're going to do.
