I got my Ed L plates today and have a question about painting them. I had some flat black spray paint in the garage and put a couple coats on the plates. I also have some spray clear coat. Should I put the clear on them? Will that make the black less likely to get chipped? I've never used clear coat before.

If a rock hit them it would probably chip with/without the clearcoat. Also if the clear isn't flat as well you will end up with gloss/semigloss black.

I decided to give them a few more coats of the flat black. Will install them tomorrow. Supposed to be nice out on Monday.

I always toss freshly painted parts in the oven at 180 - 200 for an hour or three. It helps to complete the polymerization of the paint. I find it resists chipping better than unbaked paint.

If you just threw on the flat black without using an etch primer (needed for aluminium) that flat black won't stay in place too well.

I tried clear coating a set for my bike and had it crack and haze up in about a month. Ended up sanding off what was left of the clear and shot them with some rattle can semi gloss black which has held up except for the expected rock chips. Just make sure they fit before painting them, don't want you to mess up a paint job.

Painted mine flat black, to match everything else. Has held up pretty well. Easy to touch up if needed.
