Title: WoW!!!!
Post by SavageGreaseMonkey13 on 04/21/08 at 17:44:29

I just got back from my first real ride on my savage. Just a little over 15 miles. It was a little wet and cold but what a freaking rush. The best $2000 ive ever spent. I do have a question though. It started to get dark and i noticed that the spedo is not back lit. Is it supposed to be or not? And if it is supposed to be lit how do you get in there to check the bulb and change it out? Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Ride Hard

Yes it should be back lit but couldn't tell you how to change the bulb. BUt I'm sure someone here knows. They are a wealth of info.

as long as i know now that it is supposed to be back lit i can probably figure out how to change it. shouldnt be too hard anyway. plus it will give me time to learn more about my bike.

Light bulbs are in gray rubber holders that push into the speedo.   If you have a very, very small hand, you might be able to reach up into the tank tunnel and pull the rubber socket out.

But.......  take the tank off, you'll be happier,  your hands will thank you too....

I got my replacement bulbs at Auto-Zone, so the rest of the big chain auto parts stores should have them too.

It's been a while so I hope I'm remembering this correctly:

Ya gotta pull the tank and undo three nuts on the underside of the speedometer to get at the bulbs easily. At least with my fat fingers it was easier to take out the meter to get at the bulbs to change them. Of course that means it would be wise to have an empty tank
(or near empty) so you can at least turn it on it's side to get at stuff. And by side I mean the one that doesn't have the gas cap. DON"T ASK!

It's a pretty ingenious system they've got of mounting the speedometer. Be careful not to use too much tork on those screws when you reassemble as they go into plastic type thingies. One of mine was already broken which accounted for a bit of rattle from time to time at certain rpm's.

Go to Super Bright LEDS and order the equivalent LED. Then you should only have to do the job ONCE.  :)

I didn't have to take the speedo out of the tank when I changed my HighBeam indicator.   Once I got the tank off there was enough room.
