Title: LED Accent Lights
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 07/25/08 at 08:42:41

Any of you Savage owners run any type of LED accent lights on their bikes? I've seen a couple bikers running around my town with LED lights that accent the engine and body of the bike.

Legality aside... What are your thoughts on them?

(I already know that red and blue lights are illegal, that adding these lights is probably illegal, that riding with them on is asking for a ticket, etc, etc, etc...)

Whenever I see a car with those lights, I immediately think "punk kid."  I don't know why I think that, but I do.  It just looks gaudy to me, I guess.  I don't think I've noticed a bike with them.

You know, on the other hand...  You appear to be young from your photo, and you will only be young once, so I say go ahead and doll the thing up however you want it.  Your future wife and kids will lay claim to all your money and what remains of your exuberant youth eventually, so for now spend it on toys to look back on when that day arrives.

Just the opinion of a guy who is creeping up on his 20 year reunion.

I wish I could clearly remember my 20th reunion. Those were the days. Wonder where my bell bottoms are now, and who they still fit.

On a bike it's all about being seen, right? If it doesn't result in tickets that eat up gas money and doesn't insult your persona, then go for it. More lights means more visibility. Unlike loud pipes that can't necessarily be heard from the front on the highway, bright lights can be seen in mirrors and peripheral vision. Be seen, be safe(r). Be loud and annoy your neighbors.

Jack

I remember my 20th (I didn't go because I was moving) and my 25th (it was last Saturday  ;) )

I agree with Sandy and Jack: go for it and enjoy youth while you can.

Oh, and don't forget to post pics so we can all ooh and aah over them.

Haha... Our 5th reunion should've been last year... I didn't hear anything about it though!

But I don't think it's about being young. The guys that I have seen riding around with the lights on are well past their 40's. I think it's just about customizing the bike.

You're right though... I did do the whole neon light thing in my car when I was a teen, not that I was a punk or anything, by far... But I get what you're saying.

Just wanted the opinion of some fellow Savage owners. I posted on the "generic" motorcycle forum that I also frequent and it was a torn mix between people loving them and people who kept telling me it would be breaking the law.

Oh... And FWIW - The girlfriend and I will have our 5th "anniversary" on 8/3... God how time flies!

You youngsters are making me cry! I'm leaving Tuesday for a group 60th birthday party with my high school classmates.  :(

We're going to commiserate together, congratulate ourselves on lasting this long, and mourn for those who didn't make it this far.

Besides, it's a darned good excuse to make my first lengthy trip on the Savage!  About 1100 miles round trip. :D

When I think of accent lights, I think in terms of making my bike more visible at night. REAL WORLD visibility, not mall parking lot visibility.

You should consider that the power output is limited, and that the closer you get to 100% capacity, the greater the chance for generator failure.

I have 3 of those lights a guy gave me. I just cant seem to find a good spot to stick one, or 2,, Such a subtle glow if its behind something. The cars I see with enough fluorescent bulbs under to operate a bar look like they are floating, goofy lookin.

I would not mind having some lighting just to be seen better. :o

I kinda thought some LED accents would be alright..   They make the 4 LED pods that are pretty bright and don't take a lot of juice.  Maybe some purple.   Anyone done led secondary headlights?

I like the idea okay, I just can find a spot to put them. Anyone have a suggestion? I was gonna slip one behind the screen on the fake intakes, one on each side, but the Suzuki just doesnt show me a real good spot. Maybe one on the bracket under the middle & 1 under the engine. Hey, you know, thers enough gap under the seat, a little blue glow leaking out might look kinda cool. Finding a hot wire under there oughta be easy enuff. I notice that at night, in a turn, the light is not at all good enough. Maybe a couple of small lamps to help that stocker out would be a good idea.

Here in Florida, they are starting a safety campain. They are incouraging us to put more lights on our bikes. I put them on Mavricks Savage as well as his replacement bike. Mine too! Feel safer and had several times cagers stopped short instead of t-boning me at night!  I ride blue. Mav's had red, and his vulcan had green. to see pic's  http://www.bikepics.com/members/sparkett/

Love that green! If the lights are truly bright enough, and if you turned your other lights off an a bright moonlit night, you could spawn UFO and ghost reports all over the place!

those lights fall into the same category as altezza's, and you know how the custom car crowd thinks of those.

I've looked into this issue for Missouri since I'd really like to light up my bike like the 4th of July.  First off, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, of course.  In my understanding, there is no law against having accessory lights, but there are regulations on the color, direction and distance visible.

RSMo 307.175 and 304.022 address these.  The use of blue lighting is prohibited except for emergency vehicles.  Red lighting can only be visible from the rear of the vehicle.  Per 307.085 you can have up to 2 side fender/cowl lights, either white or yellow and 1 running board light on each side, white or yellow.  Per 307.100 no kind of flashing light is allowed (including TireFlys).  And Front aimed lights are limited to 4 above 300candlepower.   Read more here:  http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/chapters/chap307.htm

So, if a cop pulls you over using blue lights, is he declaring an emergency? Are you supposed to ask him if he needs help?

I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're going to try it, give me a call.  I'll come watch.  I was too young to see the Rodney King thing live.  Had to watch re-runs.
:)

I saw a bike here in Georgia once that had so many red lights on it,it looked like a Christmas tree.

So,I'm assuming red lights are okay here :-/

Actually, I was in high school when ol' Rodney worked his magic.  I was just being smart.  My big memory is watching the VERY FIRST space shuttle take off.  The whole school (maybe 70 of us K-8) gathered in the lunch room and watched it on the school's black and white T.V.  In seventh grade, another shuttle didn't fare so well.

Back to the topic:  I say put the lights on wherever you want.  No cop I ever worked with would care one bit.  He might use it as "reasonable suspicion" in order to effect a stop if you are doing something that makes him want to talk to you, but if he writes you for the lights without warning you, I'd be surprised.  I'd also tell him to his face for you that he is a nit-picking putz.  Just give him my name and number and I'll give him heck.

Watts riots?  Oh yeah!  When the electric bills got too high, right?
