Hi, I'm new to this forum but I have a recently purchased S40 that backfires when decelerating and not just a putt putt. Can anyone provide some remedies? I already spent 700 to get it checked out and have the backfire problem fixed and guess what, it's still there. Anyway I love the bike after being away for about ten years and would love to keep it but the backfiring has got to go, besides it can't be good for the bike. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Oh wow. After you get done reading the article, do the following:

Take the largest frying pan you own and, while banging it forcefully against a sensitive body part, repeat aloud: "I will never pay anyone $700 to do anything to this bike again!" until you get tired of the squishy sound the pan is making. ;)

I think that is my favorite part of owning this bike. Even a guy like me can fix it when it requires attention.

Come to think of it, that's about the highest bill I've heard anyone mention on this site. What all did they do for you for that kind of money, if I may ask?

SEVEN hundred bucks & they couldnt make it quit backfiring? Dude, never walk in there again. What DID they do? For that $$ you coulda had a Supertrapp, New intake, pick one, slip in aftermarket, strip out airbox & go with pod filter,, man,what a shame..What kind of shop did you take it to?

ooohhh $700?!? thats like... gas for 2 years! or I like what ha said.. SuperTrapp!! There is so much on this site about that stupid backfire. Good luck, and man, don't go to a shop. Anything you need is right here, and if not, just ask.

When you turn it off.... pull the choke at the same time as the kill switch. It won't backfire. Might fart, but no big cannon shot.

On the freeway, just make sure you pull the clutch before decelerating. :)

I have read enough on this forum to know, the dealer isn't going to do anything anyways.

I ain't old enough to pull the spacer yet, but maybe someday. ;D

There are several reasons for backfiring.

Generally, the bike is tuned lean from the factory. Richening the idle mixture screw will sometimes fix it. Yours is most likely still behind a brass plug. There's a write up in the tech section. check the index at the top.

I think quite a few have said that most shops won't/can't adjust this. So they charged you $700 knowing they couldn't fix it. I wouldn't ever go back there again except to complain to BBB.

Another reason is exhaust leaks. These they should've been able to cure. Check the header bolts to see it they are loose. And check for leaks around the muffler to header connection. Use a lit candle to detect the leak.

The write-up in the tech/reference section is exactly what you need. If you want, print it out, then take your bike back to the dealer, hand them the print out and say 'Here. Do this!'

$700.00 in labor? Yikes. What your bike is doing is normal for the stock Savage. Once you hand them the carb tuning guide, you should tell them 'This repair is on YOU.'

Or, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you can do the job yourself in about an hour and a half.

I've found that I can eliminate almost all of the back fire by simply decelerating a little more slowly. Just roll the throttle down, but not completely off. Let it slow down, downshift and match revs as it's slowing, and finally roll throttle completely off as I'm coming to a stop and putting my foot down.

My S40 seldom backfires using this technique. If I rapidly roll throttle to idle from cruising speed, she pops like a machine gun.

I would follow skrapiron's advice and take the tuning instructions back to the place that took your money. Since they did not fix the backfiring problem they should not have charged you anything for that part of the work.

It torques my chain just thinking about it. If you were close by I would be more than happy to visit the shop with you and TALK to the mech & owner. >:(

I noticed that the top stud of the cylinder to manifold mount was very loose. I tightened it last night. Today on the way to work it seems to be backfiring a bit less but when it got warmed up there were a couple loud pops. I stopped to get gas and adjusted the carb. I had the adjustment screw turned 4 turns out. I backed it off to 2 turns out and continued. It backfired a bit less. I stopped and turned it in 1/2 turn. It backfired more after this so I stopped and turned it out 1 full turn making it 2 1/2 turns out in total. I only had 3 miles further to ride but it did seem to not be backfiring loudly. I can hear little burbles as I drive and let off the gas though.

LOL i took mine to the stealership for the same thing.....
they said " If it stops backfiring be very afraid" then they went on a long spill about it burning off extra gas vapors and crap, truth is THEY DIDN'T WANNA FIX IT. hubby fixed it after advice from our fellow members and now it runs like a top, I LOVE MY BIKE. :D

Just to clarify:
To richen the mixture you turn the screw out, ie counter-clockwise, right?
Stoopid question I know, but the wifes bike is lean & I am away at work so I am trying to walk her through it but I need to spell it out...
