When I am upshifting from 4th to 5th I sometimes have a hard time with the gearshift. Sometimes it's smooth, other times it doesn't feel like it has shifted gears and I have to pull up a bit harder again on the gearshift to get it to click. Is this normal? My bike is a new '08 and has about 1400 miles on it. Thanks! Kim

The 4-5 shift on my '07 almost feels like the 1-2 shift, as if there is a neutral in between (There is - there has to be - a neutral between every two gears). I usually just hold pressure on the shifter until I feel the shift complete itself. Sometimes it is noticeable on the 5-4 downshift, too.

I suspect this is a relic of the original Savage design. The original, in the '80s, was a 4-speed. Suzuki added the 5th gear when they brought the Savage back in the '90s. Could be the 5th gear didn't integrate quite as smoothly into the design.

My 4-5 shift is strange as well. For me, it almost feels like a 1/2 shift. It always engages, never goes into neutral, but it just feels like such a short throw that I sometimes am not sure if i got it or just went back the 4th.

I have to be firm changing from 4th to 5th on KLX, there is a false neutral in there.

Hey, I have the same thing. There isn't any false neutral or anything its just that it doesn't have that click like shifting into others gears. It does go in no problem though.

My 07 doesn't have that problem between 4 & 5 but I do experience the false neutral deal between 2 & 3. My 4 to 5 transition has never caused me any concern at all though.

On my '98, I get the same feel on the 4-5 shift.

If I let the engine over-rev just a tad when I pull in the clutch, the shift is smooth as butter.

Don't allow the engine to over-rev a lot, but just a little seems to do the trick.

This is how I shift 4 to 5:

Put some pressure with your toes ( up) on the shiftlever.
Roll the throttle in the close direction and at the same time increase the up pressure on the shift lever.......bingo, your shifted to 5th gear.
No clutch. Open the throttle, works at every speed. :D :D

I keep trying to find sixth gear. :-?

5th sometimes clicks in a little funny. But only when I'm thinking about it. If I don't think about it it goes fine.

I am also very good at finding the real neutral when I'm in a hurry.... at the times when I would be most embarrassed. :-[

Dang I have the same thing happen to me when shifting from 4th to 5th. And here I thought that the extra click was the 2 stage kit that I heard mentioned here so many times. ;D Just kidding figured I would insert a little e-humor

I have a 97 and I noticed the same thing over the past couple days. Just last night I up shifted from 4th to 5th and found a "neutral". Glad to see from this that it's not just my ride.

I have the same lack of firmness, for lack of a better term, going into 5th. It always goes, just not with that satisfying "click". Oh, Bigfoot just texted me back. Yeah, he's having the same problem too, and he's really hurtin' for some forward controls! ;D

I have an '05 and don't have trouble getting into 5th, BUT I don't get the 'click' that I like to hear. I can't tell you how many times I've been distracted by something and tried to shift into 5th while I'm already there. ha

I can second that motion. I find myself shifting into what I like to call 6 with no click because I look for a sixth gear out of habit or maybe lack of counting correctly (whistling looking up at the air) ;D
