Title: Where are the big guys here? Post by Rock_Steady on 07/28/08 at 18:25:04 Hello all - new member, been lurking for a bit. I am new to cycles, and in about two weeks I will be new to the savage. I have a 1996 with 1600 miles on it being held for me. My question thus: I am a big guy, 6'3" and about 280. Not all of it is donut muscle, but there is some there. Anyone else a big guy that rides a savage? I have only sat upon it once, the price is too good for me to pass up as a first bike. It seemed a mite cramped but I think its doable. What should I look out for/what shoudl be my first mods, or is the consensus that I'll be fine on it? |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 07/28/08 at 18:35:08 I'm the same height, and do just fine. You have about a hundred pounds on me, so I can't speak to that. Just plunk any extra up on the tank, and ride on! ;) I think I'd set the shocks up right away. I found that the fourth click worked best for me, so I imagine you'll want to be at least there, maybe the fifth notch. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think at that weight I'd also set the tires at two-up pressure. Can't remember off-hand what that is, but it's printed on the belt guard. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 07/28/08 at 18:39:40 I think Djmidnite12 (sp?) also cited an impressive stature when he was talking about buying new shocks. He might have some insights. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by YonuhAdisi on 07/28/08 at 18:40:02 There are several of us that are on the big side. I myself am 6 foot 250 pounds. The most common mods for comfort are some forward controls, and a seat mod. The forward controls can be purchased from Ed L. a member of this site. The tech section of this site has a very well written how to for a seat mod created by Sandy Koocanusa. Here is the link http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1215910102 A fork brace is also usually recommended. Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment. The mods I have done personally are some forward controls that I made myself, a Harley Road King tank, a Girder front end, re-jetted my carb, and a performance cam from Lancer also a member of this site and the resident carb guru. I haven't done any seat mods yet, but will be attempting that sometime in the near future. This is a link to the progression of my 2000 Savage from when I purchased it to almost present. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1215289973 |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Educatedredneck on 07/29/08 at 01:01:21 Hey Rock - I'm 6'1" and 250 lbs - put your shock on the 3rd or 4th setting, run your front tire air normal and your rear air 1-2 lbs heavier that the 1 up setting. I have found this to work rather well for me. I'm raising the front of the seat, when I find the sweet spot, I'm gonna raise the rear a bit. I don't have any forward controls, I'm thinking about a highway bar with some extended pegs. Or maybe just some floor boards. Haven't decided. Ride Safe!!!! And I'm trying the diet thing as well - ugh!!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;) |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Rock_Steady on 07/29/08 at 06:42:31 Diet? Why, boys, I'm 280lbs of Ex-Combat Engineer - composed of spring steel and raw hide. Beer powered, Air cooled. A mountainous testament to the works of Michaelangelo on a hangover. ;D I can't imagine the folks on this board are any different - Diets are for the weak! :) Thanks for the input, I think my first duty is to get the Clymer manual before I get the bike - that way I can get my ideas together. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Gort on 07/29/08 at 07:06:07 This seat mod requires a 30" inseam for your feet to be flat on the ground. With your height, this mod will allow your long legs to be comfortably bent at the knee. The 300lbs. per spring rating should be more than enough to support your weight, and you can lighten the springs to give a softer ride, if you like. Also, as you can see from the pictures, the weight of the seat is on the shock absorber arms, the strength of which would be needed to safely support your 280lbs. http://www.richard-perry.com/HDSeat/HDPoliceSeatConversion.html |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Starzuki on 07/29/08 at 09:28:24 6'3" and 180. I've found that my Sportster seat conversion gets me about a couple inches back and up from the stock seat position. I'll be looking for a set of Ed L. forward controls here to make it that much better. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by rpgpgmr on 07/29/08 at 10:49:50 I'm 6', 245 lbs and I'm pretty darn cramped on her. The handling is unbelievable and there is no better first bike, but you'll probably be looking to trade up in 6 months or so. I've done several of the mods on here, but haven't yet tried the forward controls. That might be my next investment. In my opinion, yes you'll be cramped. On the positive side though, I just led a 600+ mile ride (most of it Interstate) and the rest of the bikes in the pack had to pull me over and ask me to slow down. They were having trouble keeping up. I was running 70-80 mph and didn't notice much rattle at all. I was VERY impressed. She'll run! |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by verslagen1 on 07/29/08 at 11:31:06 6' 240# and very comfortable with the bike with drag bars and a HD seat. Currently have a set of low rise bars on the high risers. The buckhorns are for short people. Either get a set of bars that are like the drag bars with a little rise or mini apes. I personally don't like the forward controls because there would be no way I could get my a$$ up out of the seat. although I might consider hiway pegs. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Rock_Steady on 07/29/08 at 12:06:44 So would anyone suggest just going with the seat mod using spacers? I think that will have to be my first one. I guess I will just have to ride it for a while and see how bad it feels. The handlebars did seem a bit low but as I said - I am a total newb when it comes to all of this. :-/ |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by YonuhAdisi on 07/29/08 at 12:10:28 The seat mod with spacers is usually the first mod done for guys our size. So I would say go for it. If you decide to do anything else to it after a while, (which you will, the modding bug is very contagious around here) there are many folks here that are more than willing to give you all the advise you need. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by rpgpgmr on 07/29/08 at 13:05:34 Mods I'd suggest: Seat mod White spacer/Idle mixture mod Speedo rattle mod Headlight rattle mod I'm planning on the gel seat, forward controls, and highway pegs within the next 6 mo. to a year. When I look at the time and money I've spent making it more comfortable, it probably would have been cheaper and easier to just buy a bigger bike to begin with. Then on the other hand, I've learned A LOT from this bike and I truly don't think I'd have come as far as I have in 18 months if it wasn't for the S40. Something I'll be debating with myself for a long time. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Jay on 07/29/08 at 23:46:08 I'm 6ft, 260lbs. I've done a seat mod, and am in the process of further modification. Forward controls might be nice, but I'm not there yet. As for trading up to another bike, we hear that alot. I've even had the thought cross my mind since I bought the Savage; but then I remember a post in this forum of a guy who "traded up" and said that now his bike has to hooked up to a diagnostic computer before the mechanic can tell what's wrong with it. You can't beat the Savage for simplicity! And Mick, diet?! Have you been talking to my doctor? Diet is just "die" with a "t" on the end of it!!! When I asked my doctor what diet they recommended, their reply was "If it tastes good, spit it out!" |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by seviersavage on 07/31/08 at 18:31:32 forward controls, forward controls, forward controls. seat mod helps, definately liked the white spacer air fuel mixture mods but the forward controls made a nice bike a real keeper. Seviersavage |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by Dj12midnit on 07/31/08 at 19:28:28 Yes I am a bit on the larger size. 6'2" down to about 270 now. Had to loose a little weight so my new chaps and jacket would fit. Lift the front of the seat to start with. I am going to do the forwards controls but I am long in the upper body so I am not so uncomfortable. |

Title: Re: Where are the big guys here? Post by grandpa on 07/31/08 at 20:00:42 I was 6 ft and 326 lbs 1 1/2 years ago when I got my '06. Seemed like it felt the same as my Honda 500T I had in 1979 when I first joined the USAF, but 25+ years have passed. I commute virtually everyday across Memphis TN and back. I am now down to 260 after a gastric bypass done at the end of Jan. Would probably be smaller if not for my 'comfort' foods. I did the seat mod initially. I have put the 11.5 inch progressive heavy duty shocks and bigger tires on Suzi. I undid the seat mod and I like it better now. Would like to try a sportster seat one day. I can cruise 70-75 now in a 'sweet spot' of no vibration to speak of. I am very comfortable with the bike and learning a lot that I never learned in my younger days. It's a wonder I am here today!! Still haven't scraped the pegs but it seems like I should have at times. Welcome to the site and to the savages!! You will love the bike. Do a MSF course and ride safe. ;D ;D ;D |
