I remember that sound from when I was a kid. When the secondaries kicked in, there was kind of a moan, or drone, or something. Haven't heard one for awhile, but recently my bike has started doing it when I open the throttle wide.

I drilled more holes in the muffler the other day. So now I'm running the nufoam DIY filter and a fairly open exhaust. The noise started right after I drilled the holes. I never bothered as a kid to find out why a four barrel sounded that way, so I don't know if I should be worrying about my bike making a similar sound. Is it just the internal combustion engine version of a toilet flushing sound? :)

Anyone who knows something about it, please pipe up.

Sandy,
You make it sound almost like it's a problem. I remember it as an awe inspiring noise.

It's the sound of un-muffled air flowing into a small opening with a vengeance .... to mix with it's friend gasoline the make raw unadulterated horsepower.... ;D ;D ;D

Oh.... I see you may want a scientific explanation .... :P

That's just it. If it ain't a problem, then I love it. I'm just jumpy about new sounds. There aren't any idiot lights on this thing, so I like to have a translation from those who know.

Unadulterated horse power. Sounds good.

I think it's the sound of the engine taking a deep breath. Last I heard it was about 10 years ago.....
Wendy and I were in separate cars going home, stopped at a light. I was right lane in the '78 LTD with it's 460/C6, Wendy is in the center in The Beast, and some poor soul is on the left in a 3rd gen IROC Camaro. With his girlfriend. heh.

Green light, I step out smartly, IROC is even with me. I open up as does the IROC. I cannot take him, but his shiny white IROC couldn't shake a ugly cream yellow barge. Meanwhile, back in the center lane, Wendy watches the two of us pull ahead. She gives her Beast a little more gas and we pull further ahead. It dawns on her, "those suckers are RACING!" She floors it and there was that sound you remember, a moan / drone / snarly mix of the gasses through the Holley and out the Hedman's. Only lasted a second or two as she blew past us doing about 80.

In a 35 zone. *SIGH* At least I backed off at 50! which was about when she humiliated the two of us

I think that sound is FREE BREATHING, both in and out.
