Title: Did the petcock conversion
Post by RangerBob on 10/27/08 at 18:17:55

The savage wouldn't run on "on" or on "reserve" but got to where it would only run on "prime".

I followed the directions stored on the board, and now the savage is running great.

I wanted to thanks all involved in storing this information.

Bob.

Yeah, I did and like the raptor petcock too.  Makes getting the tank on and off effortless compared to the little-back-little-sideways-little-twist-lots-of-scratches method.  Now I just need to remember to turn it off at the end of a ride!  ::)

Don't forget to turn the fuel on before the ride also. I did that several times with my Harley manual petcock. Quite embarrassing.  :-[

That means ... a lot of savage petcocks are available ... cheap ... to free ... OK so ... anyone wanna get rid of one ...
Cool.

One day I'm going to get up the nerve to buy a 1982 GS1000 diaphram to see if it will work.

The '82 GS1000 petcock looks almost identical to ours , only it has the rear plate mounted 90 deg  turned.    I figure the screen is different too.

Here's a link to one on ebay , but not the best picture,

Also, the Diaphram on ebay ('82 model) looks very much like ours.

Oh ... the on/off petcock that will work, and never ever intervene with the frame on removal ... I know for sure ... GS500 tank petcock.
Its got 2 lines out of it, on and res, but its non vacuum and its opened with a screwdriver/key. The GS 500 frame petcock is the vacuum operated one.
A kawi vulcan 750 one also will fit and work, but kawi petcocks are total crap.
Cool.

If I recall correctly, the bolt holes on the base are further apart.  The 1000 takes the same petcock as my 850, but I am not sure about the diaphragm in comparison to the savage.  I tried to rebuild the petcock on my GS, but found that that way lies madness.  After two attempts, I just gave up and bought a new one.  I wanted to ride.

The next time mine goes, I think I will put the raptor petcock on.  That diaphragm seems to fail too often.

srinath, if seviersavage doesn't still have his, I think I have my old one floating around the garage.

Put a Raptor petcock on mine. No problems.

Steely shoot me a $ ...
You're not talking GS500 petcock are you ... cos that GS500 petcock is actually a straight on fit and its a super small one ... It only has 2 lines, not 1 and is opened with screwdriver/key tip ...  but it should work well ... I'll put up a pic.
Cool.

Rangerbob, did you mean you did the mod to the stock petcock or installed a new one? I did the stock mod while attempting to narrow down the source of my over-richness at idle but not sure I'm happy with it. Anybody do the stock one and notice the fuel flow is much less? I have an inline fuel filter and it doesn't stay full now while I ride like it did previously. Didn't seem to affect the ride yet so I guess the carb is getting enough fuel, just don't feel like getting stranded. Maybe I too will pickup a raptor one if nobody has any input on this.

Srinath,
Yep, sold.
My inline filter wasn't staying full all the time either- high usage would overtax it. Will see if the 660 keeps up. Otherwise it's a filter problem.

Sorry srinath,  I thought I had the old one from my 850 kicking around the garage.  I must have tossed it last time I cleaned up.
