Title: Savage wont start
Post by oddurb on 03/26/09 at 10:04:09

Hi guys !

My savage is acting strange...

When I try to start it, it just sounds like a hairdryer, whisssssssss.
It usually sounded like wiss thump thump. It just wont start.
I opened the cover on the left side, and the starter gear spins along with all the other gears visible. It seems to me like the crankshaft is not turning...

What do you guys think ?
could it be the clutch assembly that is behind the flexplate that engages the crank to spin ? If so then how do I remove the flexplate without destroying it or damaging it ?

Please help me .....

Oddur B

Questions should be in the Rubber-Side-Down.  Gets faster responses.

Need some info....  What year bike?  The starter gears changed after the Eighties bikes to add a torque limiter, which helps prevent damage from the backwards travel at shut-down.

Flex plate???  The starter clutch is a one-way spinnning thingy behind the flywheel/stator.  Check all the teeth on all the starter componets.

Sluggo, Rob or John,  move this to Rubber side.  It could get long.

It takes a specil odd Flywheel puller.   I think the outside thread is M50-1.0   if I recall correctly.

Are the teeth on the starter clutch (thing behing flywheel) bad???
