Title: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by fretman on 06/10/09 at 12:37:10 Greetings all - just introducing myself. I sealed the deal today on a white '07 s40. This is my first motorcycle, and I'm pretty excited about it. I take possession of it tomorrow morning, and hopefully will have it plated, and a maiden voyage underway, by afternoon. I started lurking here last night, and this looks like a great forum - enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. I'm sure it will be my home away from home in the months to come, as I get acquainted with my new ride! Cheers. |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by John_D on 06/10/09 at 13:50:29 Welcome! You've found a very helpful and friendly bunch of folks, as I've found out first hand. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] If this is your first bike, is this also your first time riding? If so, I strongly recommend taking a MSF course, if you haven't already. My Savage was my first ride, and I'd hate to think where I'd be now without the course. Again, welcome, and ride safe! 8-) |

I've got a few hours of lessons in at a driving school, taught by a former MSF instructor, so I'm getting some good guidance. I'm gonna continue with a couple lessons on my own bike, and I'll definitely take the 3 day course when I can - I know everyone raves about it. I've also been riding a scooter for 8 or 9 months, so I've developed some two wheel street-smarts... Thanks for the warm welcome! Looking forward to it. |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by fretman on 06/11/09 at 14:16:03 Update: got her plated today and out for a spin, despite some drizzle here in NY - what a beautiful ride! Very easy to handle, looks great, sounds great, I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship :) http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/fretsys/Suzuki%20S40/suzy.jpg |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by High-Def on 06/11/09 at 14:29:13 WoOT freah meat :D j/k welcome. Please remember to use the search function first to answer questions you might have. I along with many others have made the noob mistake of asking questions that have been answered a millions times. Don't get me wrong the people on this site will regurgitate it again and again cause they are awsome but in the effort of being a good neighbor try to check if it's been discussed before. If not, or if you have a new viewpoint, just shoot. Most here are more than happy to help in a way possible, including myself. |

Good for you! I never let a little rain stop me from going for a spin, since I live in the lovely (wet!) Northwest. Now a lot of rain is a different story! ;D |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by fretman on 06/11/09 at 19:21:03 Thanks all for the welcome and well wishes! Btw, I just realized there's a topic dedicated to introductions in the "cafe" section - I don't know how heavily modded this forum is, but this thread probably could/should be moved there? Again, thanks - more storms tomorrow in NY, but I'll be ridin'! At the vey least, I gotta go gas up... |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by PhilM on 06/12/09 at 10:36:34 Welcome! That white looks sharp with those bags. It's a classic look. Are those risers/bars a standard option? |

Thanks, yes I'm quite sure it's a totally stock '07. Previous owner added the bags and the windshield, which I like a lot. One thing I really need and want to add asap is the passenger backrest. |

To add the backrest you will need to swap the side rails for the "sissy-bar compatible" versions . You might find someone here who is removing their sissy bar and is willing to swap side rails with you - try asking in the Marketplace. |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by JohnBoy on 06/13/09 at 16:19:43 Welcome Brooklyn! Nice bike! Glad you didn't pick the "pink" one :) |

Yeah - I actually really liked the way the "pink" one looked, when I thought it was red, from the pix on the Suzuki site. After reading the "pink" thread though, not so much ;) The white/silver one looks great though. The all white one I got, probably would have been my last choice, but now that I have it, I'm really loving it - it's beautiful, and, pretty uncommon. At least here in NY, where black is the new black :) |

I didn't know that - hadn't researched it that far - thanks for the tip! Actually I'm not positive what side rails you're talking about, without looking at the bike directly, but I'm sure it will become apparent when I check it out (at least I hope so). Thanks again! |

Thanks Alcoa - as I noted, white wouldn't have been a first choice, but man do I like it now that I have it - absolutely beautiful! I do love the bike already. Today I found a big open lot at the end of my street, and just went nuts, practicing all kinds of maneuvers, really getting a feel for it. Had a blast, what fun! |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by Skid Mark on 06/15/09 at 07:40:19 I have an 08 and got the after market solution rack and back rest. The rack has long arms that fit between the stock rails & fender. The back rest bolts to the rack. They provide slightly longer bolts to accomadate the extra thickness. It fits well and works great. But its pricy. I think it cost me around $300 for the kit. I ordered it thru the dealer parts dept. |

That sounds good to me - ordered it on line, or from a brick and mortar dealer? |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by Skid Mark on 06/15/09 at 09:05:39 It was the Brick & Mortar dealer where I bought the bike. I can't remember the name of the after market outfit that supplied the kit. If it comes to me, I'll post it. |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by stratman on 06/15/09 at 12:07:54 Welcome fretman. This is an amazing resource for information. If you plan on doing any maintenance yourself, get a manual and the savage companion cd(from the Savage Store). I spend so much time reading the tips and step by step instructions here, I've only had time for a few posts. This bike floats like a Bigsby tremolo and stings like a '55 stratocaster. Ride safe, stratman |

Thanks, that would be helpful. I'll check with the local Suzuki dealers. All I found new online, was some stuff by "Cobra", but it didn't turn uo the bars, just the padded rests... |

Thanks - I know absolutely ZILCH about mechanics, but I would eventually like to be able to do routine stuff myself. I have the owners manual, but not the service manual - I'd like to pick that up, and the cd as well. I'll get into it after a little more time in the saddle, right now I'm just having way too much fun riding :) Stratman, eh? I don't have a Strat, but I have two Mustangs. and I'm shopping for a Tele. My main axes now are a Les Paul, and a custom "Blake". Cheers, and thanks again! |

I just ordered what looks like the same deal, from a Suzuki Dealer in Manhattan, came in at just about $300. I'll have it in 5 days, I'm psyched! Broke, but psyched :) |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by Skid Mark on 06/17/09 at 20:45:19 If it's the same one I have, you will really like it. It installs eAsily and looks good. Just be careful with the signal lite wires. It will be easy to pinch them between the rails and fenders, if you are not careful. |

I'm guessing it's the same, thanks for the heads up on the wires. Also, I realized I could have ordered it from Suzuki's site and had it shipped to my door, instead of schlepping it from the dealer. Somehow I didn't see it before but it's all there, on the accessories page. These are the ones I ordered, same as yours? BACKREST (http://www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/Cycles/Products/Boulevard%20S40/2009/S40/Accessories/Passenger%20Backrest/46200-24812.aspx?ProductView=true) REAR RACK (http://www.suzukicycles.com/Product%20Lines/Cycles/Products/Boulevard%20S40/2009/S40/Accessories/General/990A0-75029.aspx?ProductView=true) Oh well, going back to the dealer will give me an excuse to look at, and sit on some more bikes :P |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by Skid Mark on 06/19/09 at 06:00:06 Mines a little different. I called the dealer to see if they could tell me the 3rd part vendor, but the quoted me the Suzuki parts you are getting. |

Do you know if the one you got is any taller than the Suzuki? Mine turned out to be more of a but rest than a back rest. It's criminally expensive for what it is, and the rear rack should so be included in the package, if ya ask me... Still, it looks cool, works great for my 10 year old. and is way better than nothin'. |

Title: Re: Greetings from new forum member/s40 owner Post by Skid Mark on 06/28/09 at 13:43:12 Mine's not too different from the Suzuki one. If you are good at metal work, or know someone who is, I can't see it being too difficult to fab a taller back rest. |
