Title: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Tiefighterpilot on 04/29/10 at 22:45:31 When I first started riding (only few months ago). I told myself I will not split lanes, as moving faster/slower than traffic is dangerous. Few days ago, I started splitting lanes... just few times a day at first when traffic is just crazy stop and go. Now today, I find myself splitting lanes every traffic slowdown. How does everyone feel about splitting lanes? |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by verslagen1 on 04/29/10 at 23:41:43 I started out just like you, not going to split right away, gonna wait till I know what I'm doing. Then some cager with blacked out windows (illegal) decides he needs my open lane, we're practically eyeball to eyeball, but he comes over anyway. Right then and there I'm a full time lane splitter. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by mick on 04/29/10 at 23:51:40 I was a lane splitter,it is quite legal in Europe indeed it is encouraged so as to speed traffic along, and at every red light you always see a big gathering of M/Cs at the fore. On the other hand MCs are not a luxory item in England and Europe, alot of people prefer them to cages, with gas at $8 a gallon. With a good rain suit, who needs a bloody car ? But in the US it is dangerious, because cages do not expect it, most of them are blind to MCs anyway. I did do it on occasion, but living out in the boonies I found it unessisary. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Stimpy on 04/30/10 at 00:50:36 EVERYONE does it; with lane splitting I have 3 rules: - "feel the future" aka: avoid getting yourself into bad situation by quickly evaluating your environment and by following your gut - don't do it unless the vehicle(s) in front of you are "boxed in" . - and always always ALWAYS watch the vehicles(s) front tire, it will alert you to a sudden change of direcion and give you time to react. * extra rule: use your horn and/or rev up freely, most drivers will rearview instinctivly just to see what's up and where that bike is (cause they've always wanted one too you know). Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/30/10 at 01:40:13 Then theres the jasshonkey who sees ya comin & tosses something out the window or opens the door.. A buddy had to use duct tape to seal the cr5ack he got in an engine case because some hate filled redneck tossed bricks out the window as he was comong up to pass on his bike. Thers a few insane, hateful people out there, dont let your guard down. |

Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by matt on 04/30/10 at 11:52:51 i did a few times just being impatient, i always fear some jerk off will throw something out at the same time i go by, just becasue they feel like "they can" like emptying there cup of whatever out, trash, cigarette butts, etc. i wont unless i need to be somewhere in a certain time or i know the i will be stuck behind grandma traffic. i have to say there is a lot of ignotant people in florida. id have to say most of it all boils down to self esteem issues and or molestation growing up and the need to control. Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by EJID on 04/30/10 at 21:08:49 Never done it, and never will since it's against the law here in Idaho!!! |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by BurnPgh on 04/30/10 at 22:48:48 If it's really backed up and Ive had plenty of time to scope the immediate surroundings for cops I'll do it. It doesnt really get like that too often though. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by JohnBoy on 04/30/10 at 23:18:39 I have done it. And, almost every time I have felt a little surprised that I wasn't hurt in the process. I know that there are times you need to...just be double or even triple careful. Stupid not only hurts "A Lot!!!", but it is very expensive. |

Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by LostArtist on 09/29/10 at 20:49:45 wow, saw that coming though, big open gap to the right, someone is going to take advantage of that, they had time to react but didn't, poor bike :( |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Lupo on 09/29/10 at 22:00:25 Moving to Arizona from California the 2 things I missed most were all the awesome canyon roads (I lived at the base of Angeles Crest Hwy) and lane sharing / splitting. I've now learned it is only legal in California. All the other states have laws prohibiting it though I know Washington has been trying to change the law. California law states you can only occupy one lane at a time and because a motorcycle is a single track vehicle it can only be in one lane. Other states say you can't be next to another vehicle in the same lane or stuff like that which prohibits lane sharing. If traffic really irks me, sometimes I'll do it anyway. What we need to do ( I have) is email and bug the AMA and ABATE to push those issues instead of fighting helmet laws. Lane sharing is safer at intersections since you eliminate the potential of being rear ended and motorcyclists can flow through congestion which eases the overall traffic buildup. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Serowbot on 09/29/10 at 23:18:09 I had to lane split today when 5mph Granny turned into the center lane, instead of taking the first... I nearly had to duck under the SUV's side mirror next to me,... just not used to being that close... It's illegal here, but so is suicide... and getting hit by granny is suicide... ... but it got really hairy, on the way back,... trying to get home before the quart of margarita sherbet in my backpack melted ... Didn't leak a drop... ;)... .. speaking of suicide,... this guy won't live to see his next oil change... |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by mpescatori on 09/30/10 at 00:59:37 Copy Nick and Stimpy on their remarks. Lane splitting is quite normal in Europe, consider that up to a few years ago all MCs were aircooled anyway, there's NO WAY an air cooled bike will sit still in stationary traffic, moving means survival at least in terms of engine mechanicals etc. As for "Look out ahead" I learned one fundamental rule: DRIVE BY LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD OF THE CAR IN FRONT In other words, if you can see what he sees, you will understand what's on his mind. Also NEVER EVER SPLIT BETWEEN TWO TRUCKS (especially the big rigs !!!) STAY AWAY FROM Q-TIPS STAY AWAY FROM WEEKEND TEENAGE DRIVERS STAY AWAY FROM MINIVANS WITH SOCCER/HOCKEY/SPORTS TEAMS (Mom will be outta her mind) And remember... your kneecaps are your bumpers, your collarbone is your roll bar, and if you're not convinced, YOUR A$$ IS GRASS !!! :) |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by justin_o_guy2 on 09/30/10 at 04:24:45 Lane splitting is one thing. Running thru there at stupid speeds is another. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by CeliaMarie on 09/30/10 at 05:01:28 I wonder when that was taken and if that guy is still alive.. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by kimchris1 on 09/30/10 at 08:14:43 Myself I have never split lanes. Living in a state where it is illegal perhaps is one of the reasons why. I will say he seemed to have good reflexes yet not as many brain cells. I watched the entire video and at times found myself saying, omg.. It is one thing to split them as he was, another to do wheelies as well. Or at least it looked to me like he popped a couple. I do understand the reasoning for wanting to keep the bike moving as visiting here in Ca in the triple digits, it would not take long for the engine to over heat in these temps. I am not opposed to splitting lanes, if I lived here I would get used to it as would practice at my own rate and not be pressured by someone else's.. I have seen a few do the lane splitting here and it makes me watch my mirrors in the cage even more when stopped at the lights as well as when plain driving.. :) kim |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by LostArtist on 09/30/10 at 10:59:05 I don't even like it when another biker is beside me in my lane same for two lanes with a car, don't like being beside other vehicles |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by serenity3743 on 09/30/10 at 11:58:20 Maybe he'll have his camera rig on when his a$$ gets smeared all over the asphalt. Then we will see why NOT to follow his example. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by John_D FSO on 09/30/10 at 15:34:10 Never done the lane splitting, since as Kim says, it's illegal here and in OR. Not that it stops some people. More power to 'em, if they do it safely, but especially with my new wider bike, I'm not going to try it. I just don't trust the bonehead drivers around her enough for them not to do something stupid when I'm squeezing through. :-? |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Starlifter on 09/30/10 at 19:59:48 Wouldn't even think of doing it...anyway it's illegal here too as it should be. Too many nuts out there. Happens when I ride my bicycle also. Some redneck in a pickup who apparently cannot stand to see any display of physical fitness blasted his horn and threw a beer can at me not too long ago. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by verslagen1 on 09/30/10 at 20:12:14 good thing he was a friend. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Southpaw on 09/30/10 at 20:20:02 Will only consider it in an emergency! Too many drivers equate it with the fool that drives to the very end of a closing lane in a construction zone and then slows everyone up trying to "butt back in line". Tried explaining how its not the same at a lunchroom argument but people had their minds already made up. |

Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by WD on 10/02/10 at 14:41:18 Just because it is illegal in Wa you won't do it? Must be nice to not have to deal with Seattle metroplex (check a map, Seattle runs from milepost 206 to milepost 116) idiocy. I'll split it in town any chance I get. And if Granny Bluehair is following me, I'm taking to the sidewalk. They may not see a motorcycle as anything other than a targeting dot, but that fireplug will at least slow her down. Speaking of lane ending crowding, try it in a heavy haul tractor trailer. I'll be in the correct spot a mile or two before the lane ends, watching the fools stack up in the one that tapers away to nothing. I get to where they have to merge in, and I straddle the shoulder line. I've had 2 cages and a cement mixer come around me and end up in the creek because, horror of horrors, god forbid you get stuck behind a semi... I've had Bubbas, Achmeds, Pacos, Apus and Changs all open doors or throw something at me while I was splitting. I carry BIG knives or BIG spikes when I'm riding...taking off mirrors and popping their tires is good clean fun. They were just lucky I rarely carry anything more dangerous anymore... |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by John_D FSO on 10/06/10 at 02:32:45 Not necessarily because it's illegal, mostly because I'm just not comfortable doing it. It all boils down to some words of wisdom my Mom gave me when I was learning to drive (at about 12 years old :D), "don't drive any faster than you feel safe". That also applies to most of my other driving and riding habits. If I don't feel safe doing it, I don't. That's doesn't mean I don't approve of splitting by any means, I just don't have the nerves for it! :-/ |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by odmanout on 10/10/10 at 07:26:50 My brother in law used to race motocross and flat track when he was a teen. He was pretty good at it but couldn't get it through his head that a busy 4-lane was not a track. They pulled him out from under the rear of cars four times before he learned that lesson. He got busted up enough so that now at age 54 he has a bad back, shoulder, hand and legs giving him constant problems. Not worth saving a few minutes IMHO. |
Title: Re: Can't stop splitting lanes! Post by Red_Wine on 10/14/10 at 10:08:31 Down here lane splitting and weaving are normal... I just try to avoid it at speed, and only do it when traffic is really slow or just jammed... Mirrors are a nice trophy when cagers think riders are disposable... RW |
