Title: Cheated death again Post by Phelonius on 05/05/10 at 10:48:54 Riding in ths industrial south end of Seattle yesterday when a large van ( about 10,000 pounds) came up from behind and the front fender hit my elbow driving my hand from the bar. Then it hit the end of the bar forcing the steering hard to the right. This caused the sidecar to leap high into the air as the west coast mirror and frame hit me from the middle of the back across the shoulder, slamming me down and off the bike. As I fell between the bike and the truck, for a hundredth of a second I saw the machine roaring away on two wheels with the sidecar high in the air as the front wheel of the truck hit my head a grazing blow. This rotated my body just enough that when the rear duallies hit, my head was only partially under the wheel. The slick surface of the helmet saved me as I felt the helmet squirt out from under the wheel like shooting a marble with your thumb. I felt the rear wheels brush my back as the truck roared past. The whiplash this caused stunned me and I just lay there concious but unable to move as traffic stopped and people gathered around. They were asking me questions but I couldn't understand them. After about 5 minutes I was able to get up but was still groggy in shock. The doctors are still studying the xrays of my neck and ribs so I don't know the full story yet. When the bike roared away it fell back onto all three and as the throttle sprang shut it veered left and hit the truck as it stopped. The fairing was torn off but other than that the bike damage was only superficial. Now comes all the red tape, I guess that is better than being a red stain on the asphalt. Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by verslagen1 on 05/05/10 at 11:32:27 phel, glad you're alive. I hope to read in the news that the driver receives his just reward... a sidecar enema... 'can you see me now?' |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by EJID on 05/05/10 at 11:33:27 HOLY COW!!! :o :o :o Sounds like were millimeters from getting your ticket punched, but so glad it didn't come to that. Hopefully that other driver stopped and was ticketed to begin with. By the end of the hospital stay I hope he is charged with much more. Glad to hear you made it through, and hope that there is nothing significant that the doctors will find (or miss)!!! Take care and be sure you take time to heal whatever wounds you do have. :-? |

Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Phelonius on 05/05/10 at 15:47:39 The driver stopped but he never even spoke to me. I didn't even know which person he was until just before he left when the cop pointed him out. He was a kid. Probably 20 to no more than 25, driving some kind of commercial van about the size of a ford F600 or bigger. There were people trying to help me until the cop arrived at which time they all evaporated. Since I didn't actually see what had happened and the trucker apparantly didn't say much either, and no witnesses said anything, no ticket was given to either of us and the cop could assign no blame. It will be interesting to see what kind of pizzing match the insurance companies have over this. If I did not have diabetes, I would have spent last night in a bottle of Irish whisky I took two oxycodones and slept fitfully, Every time I started to dream , I would wake up. so I guess the dreams were'nt worth having. Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Max_Morley on 05/05/10 at 20:01:39 Says something about wearing a helmet whether you like the intrusion on your individual liberty. AZ doesn't require helmets and my wifenI are in a minority when ATGATT even down to the shopping center in the housing area. You just never know when it i going to happen. Heal quickly Phelonius, Max |

If I didnt know better Id say its your time, only God and the devil cant quit arguing about who has to keep you ;D . Glad you're not seriously inured. Get well soon. |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by crabpainter on 05/06/10 at 02:16:09 Absolutely glad you're alive and able to tell the tale! Please tell me if you think your hack had anything to do with the outcome. Do you think YOU would have been better off on two wheels? The bike obviously enjoyed the benefits of it's third leg once stripped of it's rider. Thankful I get to ask. |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Starlifter on 05/06/10 at 08:18:39 Holy cow! Sure glad that you came out of this just banged up and not dead. Thats about as close as it gets. No charges against the moron driving the van eh?...oh I forgot the motorcyclist is always at fault. >:( Get better soon P and sue the bast**d. |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Phelonius on 05/06/10 at 09:29:41 I don't think a suit would be sucessful. I am just happy to have ridden home on the same machine As for it being my time, BS! I think fate wants me to waste away from my other health problems so that I suffer more. I just want to ride as long as I can. when I can't do that anymore, maybe a dually over my head would be a mercy. Phelonius ::) ::) ::) ::) |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by DocNeedles on 05/06/10 at 09:42:41 What a story!!!! Glad you are relatively OK and heal quickly. DocNeedles |

For a very short stint I did some work as a movie extra but never anything that much fun. My nephew now is a semi pro stunt man and had worked as such in Holland and in the USA. He has done motorcycle scenes in commercials and even was one of the stunt drivers in the first Batman movie that had that totally awesome giant wheeled batmobile running over villians. Phelonius |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by buttgoat1 on 05/07/10 at 09:30:16 Wow, that is an incredible event to survive, much less relatively unhurt. |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by dasch on 05/07/10 at 10:30:33 A good friend of mine had a similar experience. Car tire climbing onto his head and round slick helmet just popped out somehow. He was in shock for few days, made him think a lot. He didn't change jack, of course. Still riding wild... ;) |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Phelonius on 05/07/10 at 11:31:16 Good on him, I am still running wild too. Maybe not as wild as when I was a young Turk but that is because I am now old and feeble, not because of any puny truck crash. Phelonius ;D ;D ;D ;) |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Southpaw on 05/07/10 at 13:23:40 Sure glad you're still around to talk about it! Ever see the movie "Unbreakable" ? :o |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Angie on 05/24/10 at 07:37:41 Just thought I'd let you know that I sent a link to this thread to a friend of mine that had to do a speech on the pros vs cons of wearing a helmet. Her hubby has a Harley, but neither of them have worn helmets in the past. After reading about your experience and the other research she did for her speech - Im happy to say she went out and bought herself a helmet this weekend. :) |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by bill67 on 05/24/10 at 07:45:51 About 90% of the people in my area don't wear helmets and also wear short sleeve shirts and a lot of them wear short pants,I do wear a helmet, but wear short sleeve shirts.Know one wears gloves in the summer. |
Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by Starlifter on 05/24/10 at 07:53:19 Ah, that is great. Two new helmet wearers. Phelonius did not almost die in vain. :D |

Title: Re: Cheated death again Post by kimchris1 on 05/24/10 at 18:29:47 Wow I just finished reading all the posts of your accident. First I am very glad to hear your able to tell us about it and that your home. I don't envy you for what lays ahead with the insurance companies as they can sure wear a person down. Get some rest and give yourself time to heal. I wish someone to come forward to say they seen all that happened as was the help I had in my accident. I have ridden all around Seattle on my bikes and know what a hazzard it as well as any other place can be. All it takes is a one person not paying attention and were down. Keep us posted on your recovery as well as your bikes.. Hugs and best wishes to you. I am very happy to read we did not lose you.. Kim |

A green bug that went "SPLAT !" all over my visor, and I had to stop and clean it. ::) It's a good thing I was wearing a helmet... I hate green bug splatter in my eyes... :o Not to mention the itsy bl;ack gnats in your hair, dust in your eyes, and your scalp being ground like cheese on a grater any time you fall...
