VERY nice!  you are so much faster than me.  Mine is still in lots of pieces after a month.  The white paint makes it look soooo short.  funny.  great job man!

Wow, that's alot of work for 4 weeks.  At the risk of offending someone else who might like the color, that green was awful!!  Blah!  I like the white much better.   Looks great, you should be proud.

It's beautiful!!!! How'd you do the fender and seat???

Post by earlytimz on 05/11/10 at 13:51:48

Thanks yall

Yeah, it was really hard for me to look past that fugly-azz green color when I first went to look at the bike. I had a vision and I knew all along that the color didn't matter because I was gonna bob it out anyway. The PO had just painted the bike and he was so proud of it! LoL. I think he said it was "celery green metallic". Whatever dude... I had to choke down the little bit of puke in the back of my throat when I first saw it.

I cut the fender from a blank trailer fender from Tractor Supply. I welded a mount to the swingarm and you might see I opted to only use one strut (on the right side). Maybe I didn't even need the one, but it was easy to do and makes me feel a little better about the fender not getting down into the tire if it ever gets sat on or whatever. I went with a 150-90 tire and the clearance is pretty tight anyway.

The seat is an ultima 13" leather, hinged in the front and just sitting on the frame horns in the rear.

I've still got a few odds and ends to button up before I can give an honest ride report. I worked through a clutch fiasco last night (my bad) and had to re-route my throttle cable as well. I put less than 2 miles on it before I completely torn it down to the frame & began the transformation. It went pretty quickly, but I had some awesome help...
http://i39.tinypic.com/t4wztd.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/2rcal8g.jpg

I've got a bunch of progress pics I may or may not post up later on. A few of the custom parts I built and just general pics of a messy shop with a pile of parts (somewhat resembling a bike) in the middle.

Still debating on cutting off the back few inches of the frame tonight so the seat will sit down low and dirty... Hmmm...

Stay tuned

Progress pics would be great!  Especially the custom pieces.

I love having my little gut help me out in the garage.  He looses interest pretty quick though.  Is your's about 5?  Looks about the same size as mine.

nice :)  need to put a speed racer M on that front fender :)  not a fan of apes but I know some people need them to feel comfortable, make the bike look real small though

Very nice job, and I agree, that puke green was nauseating.

Have you considered a chain conversion?

I don't particularly like the green you started with, but quite frankly I think the bobber idea is a bad one. Essentially, you have made a "fashion stetement" and at the same time decreased the resale value of your motorcycle.  To each his own.

That is sweet, mine is closer to completion.  Im bobbing mine as well.

And if you buy an HD, you make a different fashion statement by spending a fortune up front, then instead of taking off non-essential items you start adding $5k in bolt on accessories to make that statement, but do you really change the resale value? Maybe that's why 95% of all used HDs list in GREAT detail every $20 do-hickey that they had the dealership bolt on just trying to justify the +$20k they have into a bike.

A bike that you can ride is not an investment, enjoy it while you can, but don't expect to make money on it!  :D

Personally, I bought my S40 from someone who bobbed it out and after spending about $500 (including a new pair of tires) I now have a bike that is fully equipped again and has more that it did when it was stock. Plus by putting the bike back the way I wanted it I know it much more thoroughly than I would have if I bought it new and only washed it before riding it. Congrats on all the work you did, and I agree that FUGLY green had to go and I like the white  :)

Not sure why people like to tear up their beautiful bikes. Rip off seats & fenders, make them look like junkers...no offence ment, but could someone shed some light on this practice???

Title: Re: Ahhh, now that's better!
Post by 12Bravo on 05/11/10 at 19:37:42

Earlytimz, nice looking bobber.

The idea behind a bobber is to take as much weight off the bike and it still be functional (someone correct me if I am wrong). I bobbed mine to make it lighter and also to make it look unique to other bikes around me. It's all in what a person likes in a bike. Some like to rake the front (chopper), others 'bob', while some like to add luggage for trips. To each his/her own. I have a Suzuki Burgman that I use for long rides/taking trips on so bobbing the S40 made sense to me.

We're bored!  ;)

Title: Re: Ahhh, now that's better!
Post by earlytimz on 05/11/10 at 19:42:06

Wow... I'm sure feeling the love... Well, mostly (but that's cool too)... Thanks!

I went with the solid white paint because I like to be different and too many folks paint their bobbers flat black. Gloss white is the exact opposite, plus I've yet to see another one like it. I have always liked white or silver bikes... Light colors in general I guess. I think it's a real clean look. My advice to anyone doing a build is to get a picture in your mind of what your bike will look like when it's done. Work towards that image until you're happy. Sure, things will change. Sometimes you won't have any control over that but stay focused and don't go into it blindly.

I'll start from the top...

Scott,
I'll try to get some more pics posted up soon but I can promise it won't be tonight. My forward controls arrived today, so I'm working on them now. Plus I did the dirty and cut about 2.5 inches off the rear frame horns. Yeah boy, that's what I'm talking about! Now the seat is sitting down into the frame a little better, dropped it over an inch. You know what they say... Once you go HACK, you NEVER go back!! LoL
My fine looking young helper is Mason. He just turned 4 in March, and I know all about the attention loss thing. Well, also tool and parts loss as well. I gotta keep an eye on him or he'll rearrange my whole shop! Good thing I ain't paying him very much!!

thumperclone,
I got that muffler on ebay. It was supposed to be a Larosa but I think it says MAC on it. I dunno, I was looking for a turn-down muffler and found this one super cheap. It's an aftermarket for HD and YES, it is loud and actually sounds really good! I worried over that for weeks, not knowing what it would sound like. I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then huh??

Edgar,
I'll post some more pics soon, I promise. The fender is mounted to a bracket I welded to the swingarm. I also added a single strut on the right side for a little added stability. The mounting bracket is just a piece of 1/8" flat stock about 4 inches long X 1.5" wide w/ 2 holes in it. Very simple really. The seat uses the usual bobber style hinge. I cut 2 pieces of aluminum angle   _l   l_   w/ holes at the bottom to mount to the rear tank mounts and holes at top for the seat hinge.

LostArtist,
Thanks! Not familiar with speed racer, but my son would like the "M" on there fo sho! (Mason)
Oh, and until you rock the apes, you don't know what comfort is!! I dunno if it's the bars making it look small, the lack of extra fender hanging off the rear, or a combination of both. Oh well, I don't mind it...

crash_tx,
Man I hope that's just a name and not a habit!
I absolutely have considered a chain conversion. In fact, I have read up on it quite a bit. If my pockets were deeper, I'd already be there bro. I love the thought of higher gearing for the freeway. Thump Thump Thump... That's gonna have to wait for now. As a compromise, I put a bigger tire out back 150-90 to get a little taller gearing & wanted to fill the width of the fender better. I've heard some folks talk about losing bottom end this way, but come on, really?? This thing is loaded with bottom end to spare. I can't see a problem here.

Charon,
Come on bro, a bad day at the office or what?? To each his own.. I'm glad we agree on that. Kinda works for opinions too huh? I've had several bikes over the years & I've been wanting to build a bobber for the last few. I finally get my chance to do what I've been dreaming about and you gotta hit me with that?
Honestly BUD, an 86 savage w/ fugly azz green paint, bad cam chain, dirty as hell, front tire dry rotted, mirrors so cloudy you can't even see out of 'em, rear signals missing, etc, etc, etc... And you wanna rag me about resale value??? I would give TWICE the money for it now!!!
Thanks for the... whatever, I dunno...Just go away... Thanks

mike...82,
Thanks man! I hope we get pics of your ride too!

EJID,
DITTO BRO!!! Enough said

Starlifter,
What is it tonight?? Ain't yall got a wife or a dog to beat on or something??? I'm all for helping a brother vent or get something off their chest but dag-gone! It must be jealousy

12Bravo,
Infantry Man!! Thank you Brother, for your service (I assume) and for the kinds words! Like you, I don't want my bike to look like everyone else's bike. Get over it folks

So anyways, here's a quick list of what was done:

New cam chain and guides
Ported the intake & exhaust ports
10" apes
Hand made rear fender
Hand made tag bracket
Model 'A' tail light
New tires f & r

Eh I dont know a fair price as I've never priced them out yet.  Nice to see another Savage rider within a couple hours drive.  I am working on bobbing out my savage as well, just need the stock bars to put a little bit larger tank on there.

Yup I was a glorified grunt with a shovel (combat engineer). I went the el cheapo route when I bobbed mine. I found a front Savage seat and a real cheap Savage fender on Ebay. I went to chopping off the fender then repainted it with automotive undercoating. I bought some after-market DOT turn signals from Dennis Kirk (man are they bright).I decided to just chop a Savage fender since most people go with a trailer fender (I have to be different) Total cost is about $150 for everything.

Thanks man, looking forward to the pics. I can't wrap my head around how someone can be sitting at home looking at the pics of your bobber, decide they don't like it, and MUST let everyone know they don't dig it. Every man has a vision of what they want their bike or car or even home to look like when they buy it. Be it a bobber, long traveling bike, a complete shiny stock bike, an off road truck lifted or a lime green house! Can't you just shrug your shoulders and say "to each his own"???? Jeez! your bike is awesome man!!!

Charon did just that..."I don't particularly like the green you started with, but quite frankly I think the bobber idea is a bad one. Essentially, you have made a "fashion stetement" and at the same time decreased the resale value of your motorcycle.  To each his own. "
I wouldnt get too upset about it.
I think it looks pretty BA myself. I eventually plan on bobbing mine but Ive spent way way too much time and money lately on other mods. I'll get to cosmetics later. New valves, Rebore, High Comp piston, cam, carb, and a new header (that Im just going to sit on for a while before I can get it modded to fit) have set me back as far as I care to be set back. Looks good.

so sorry the po was so upset with it he had to sell it.

so a 150 tire fits on these no problem??? Obviously not with a stock rear fender, but the width of the 150 is no problem?

I bobbed mine for no practical reason. I bought it to chop stuff off. A hobby, if you will, keeps you busy, focused, presents a challenge that's not so easy to meet. Depending on the vision.

Nice job ET.  Looking forward to some more pics.  Since I've seen so many of these projects I guess it might be time to suggest a new general category like "Bobbers Corner" or something.  A place where bobbing ideas can be talked about and seen.  Anyway just a thought.

As far as the re-sale comment from a previous post ... well, it's not like a used LS650 has much re-sale value anyway ... if a Bob-job is your fancy, then have at 'er!! 8-)

Im also curious about fitting the 150-90 tire on there.  I just ordered one and it got here and it doesnt look like it will clear the front support on the swingarm where the fender ends on the underside of the bike.  Did you have any issues with this?

Title: Re: Ahhh, now that's better!
Post by earlytimz on 05/12/10 at 05:59:15

Hey Nerf,
The 150-90 will fit, but yes it's pretty tight on the right side. I've got maybe 3/8" clearance between the tire and the swingarm where you're talking about. I still need to tighten my belt just a tad, so that'll give a little more room. Keep in mind that not all tires will measure the same though. I just put on a set of Kenda Kruz, so yours may be different. I kinda thought mine were big for their stated size. I did the calculations before I ordered and wasn't expecting it to be so tight... But it works!

Had some people ask about the rear fender & seat mounts. Here's a couple quick pics. You can also kinda see how tight the tire tucks in there.

Cool! I ordered a Dunlop Rear D404 150/90H-15 white wall tire so I am hoping it will fit.  It didnt look like it would by eyeballing it but I will have to mount it to be sure.  3/8 of an inch clearance is all you need.

Title: Re: Ahhh, now that's better!

Seems like when you post pics of a build on here you're asking for comments and you oughta be a little less touchy about folks who don't share your vision.  Nice job on the build.  I like the fender a lot.  I'm taking some time getting used to the white but it's growing on me.  I think some graphics of some kind would add a lot.  I don't like the ape hangers but that's just a personal preference, maybe I would come around if they're as comfortable as you say.  But all in all I would say very cool bike and you have reason to be proud of it.

Good advice on having a vision.  I chopped my fender in Photoshop a few times before actually getting after it with a cutting wheel.  When I was researching bags I pasted the catalog photos onto my pics and that really helped me decide.  It's also really useful for helping to imagine a color change or graphics.

And lastly, since we're dealing with individuality and artistic choice I will admit that I kinda liked that green.

Title: Re: Ahhh, now that's better!
Post by earlytimz on 05/12/10 at 06:47:21

Thanks again everyone, for the kind words!

Well, I mentioned last night I was cutting the rear frame horns off a bit so the seat would sit down on the frame a little better. I'm using the factory seat mounts to hold my turn signals, so I was able to keep them intact which I'm happy about. Those little signals are pretty friggin cool, by the way. I need to get some good pics of them. I picked them up at a truck stop, they're actually lighted license plate fasteners. Truck stops have all kinds of little chrome and stainless do-dads... This isn't them EXACTLY, but really close:

http://i44.tinypic.com/2zolu7d.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/mspde.jpg
No, that's not my fender. It's a plate I made to keep everything tucked up under the seat and all pretty like. Had to modify it too...
http://i40.tinypic.com/2wr1cgk.jpg
I measured but didn't take a pic of the before... Keep in mind the bike is up on blocks, so it'll drop down some more. It dropped the rear of the seat down about an inch which made a big improvement to the gap under it that kinda bothered me. Sits nice too...

Also worked on my forward controls. Can't really comment on them yet until I speak to Mr. Ed L. His craftsmanship is outstanding but I had some fitment issues. This is an 86 and they must be A LOT different than the newer models as far as the left peg & kickstand go... I dunno, took some figuring and enlarging the big hole for the peg/ shift rod to go thru & the kickstand spring hook didn't line up w/ the notch. (aluminum, although a soft metal, is a biotch to drill big holes in!) I got them straightened out & even re-relocated the kick stand to the factory position... Something I wanted to do anyways. So they are done and primed/ painted a satin black to match the frame. I'll get them on again for good tonight...

Hey Bro, I can take the heat man.. I promise. I welcome constructive criticism, but borderline insults are not my idea of constructive. No worries though, I ain't sweatin 'em. Some people got nothing better to do... It's part of life and especially easy for some to grow a huge set of inter-nuts and hide behind the computer. Not my thing, but I guess "to each his own" Ha Ha, seems to be a popular statement around here!!

Anyways... Thanks for the kind words. You should try a ride with a set of apes/ minis sometime. As long as they aren't higher than your shoulder, they are great! (otherwise your hands go to sleep)
I realize some of you look at that big white tank and see a blank canvas. I appreciate that but personally I like the simple, clean look of it. Plus it'll friggin blind your azz if you look at it in the sun!! LoL

I hadn't ever really thought about that before, but about 2 weeks ago on a group ride one of the other riders came over and talked to me about my paint on my tank. I have gloss blue on the sides and flat black across the middle and he said that's really cool and it doesn't reflect the sun like a glossy paint job does. Apparently when he has his w/s and tank real clean he ends up getting blinded by the sun  :o
It was just one of those added benefits I guess  8-)

EJID,
Yeah, the white is especially bad about blinding you in direct sunlight. I don't think it's a problem when I'm riding, but standing around looking at it sure is hard on the pupils... LoL

I've seen your bike and I really dig the paint scheme you went with. I was originally gonna go with Hot Rod Flatz midnight blue, which I actually ordered a kit of. It turned out to be a lot darker than I envisioned... I was hoping for a more faded-denim look (blue-grayish) Spent several nights milling over this in my head... Couldn't decide on a color. I eventually got the tins sprayed in light gray primer and mocked them up on the bike. Wow, I really liked that light color & then it hit me... Almost went with flat white, which I may still do later on for the heck of it.

It's a good thing I'm not busy at work today. Plenty of time to mess around on the ol' interweb. Actually fixin to make a 50 mile run up to a couple cell sites to test some fibers. Easy day, just like I like 'em!! LoL.

I'm from a small town a couple hours east of BG, but been here for 10-11 years now. Not a bad place to be at all.

No I never get back there anymore is Beech Bend still there.

The model A tail light is a nice touch to the side license mount! Good looking job overall! Out of curiosity, how bright are the front mini blinkers? The cops around here would be giving you grief over how close they are together. That's one place I'd worry about sending the wrong signal to an oncoming cager. Having them turn right in front of you is a real "pucker" moment I try to avoid! Anyway, enjoy the ride and the looks. You've earned them!

Ride safe!

Hey Bill,
Yeah, Beech Bend is still here. I live way out in the north part of the county about 10 miles from there as the crow flies. I can hear the drag cars running on quiet saturday nights. Thru the summer, they usually have some big event going on down there every weekend . Whether it's at the drag strip or the circle track, or both. Pretty cool place to be if you're a gear head. Being right on the river, They got flooded out a couple weeks ago... Yall might have heard about the flooding around here...

SouthPaw,
Thank you, Sir...
Those little signals are surprisingly bright. I'm sure they aren't actually legal, but it sure as hell beats what my original plan was!! Besides, they are pretty friggin sick!! I absolutely love the rears mounted on the factory seat mounts. It's a perfect spot & looks killer. I agree the fronts are a little close to the headlight, maybe too close. I milled over that for days and finally made a bracket to mount them to. Didn't have a lot of options so it is what it is... I'm not using a horn either, which isn't legal, but honestly in all my years of riding I have never used it anyway. In a pinch, I never have time to look down & find the horn. I always just yell at 'em! Trust me, it's gets their attention and 90% of the time it's a woman in a mini-van, on a cell phone!! LoL
Here's a shot of one. I had to buy 2 sets (packs of 4) since I broke one of the leads during dis-assembly and needed an extra. Now I have 3 spares which is nice since you cant change the bulbs. Diameter is about 3/4", the stamps give you a reference. Also included some eye candy because... well... who really wants to look at a dang mini light bulb anyways??? I bought my seat from Demon's. Awesome guys to work with and had it here from FL in 2 days.     Enjoy!

Very nice bobber! As far as why, why not? People personalize bikes any which way and I love them all! Whether is totally ratted with rust and a Longhorn skull or a $15,000 Pereweitz paint job! It's yours, eff it up anyway you want as long as you can still ride it. Resale value? Come on! Everybody knows the Savage is supposed to be a throw away bike! We here, have figured out better stuff to do with it. So keep posting pics  of your latest atrocity to the motorcycle kingdom, and I'll keep looking! Just throw in an occasional girl with some nice wobbly bits to cleanse the palate, as it were.   :D

Hey baby, the savageness is in our blood!! LoL

Whew.. I'm having a heck of a time tonight. I think it's time to put her to bed and hit it again tmrw evening. (after I cut the grass of course.. ughh)
These forward controls are giving me fits. Ed says he's never had any probs like I'm having, so I dunno what's up. Never got any feedback on whether the 86's kickstand & pegs are different...???
I had to modify the left plate in 3 different ways to make it work. It's good to go now & even put the kickstand back in the stock location. The right plate seemed good during mock-up, but I ended up making another brake & brake light cable holder because the cable wouldn't work & there's no adjustment there. It needed less slack & I didn't wanna drill a new hole in the plate to move it.
Mine is on the left:

I've got a set of mini-marker lights almost exactly like those that a friend picked up for me at Harbor Fright, a couple dollars I think.  Mine have 3 fins sticking out though, kinda like the old spinners on racing tires.  Good to know they're so bright.  I'm thinking of eventually putting them on the plate, and wiring them up either as extra turn or just running lights.  Depends on the rules for what colors can be used for which purpose around here. :-/

And I always thought the Savages looked good enough to eat, and here comes Verslagen tellin' me I'm not supposed to?!  :P

Earlytimz did you have to get longer cables for the ape hangers? if so where did you get them?  I'm working on a project putting on 3" risers and split the bars and stretched 6" have not got back together hoping not to have to much problem.

nice looking bike!

I didn't get longer cables, but I sure could've used them. I just re-routed the clutch and throttle cables but I don't really like them like they are. They do work.. I will probably still change them out later on when after my wallet recovers from the initial shock of building this thing.

Hey John, there's a lot of things we're "not supposed" to do... I say as long as it's consensual you'll be alright...  LoL

OK... Another slow day at the office so I'll post a few pics of the work in progress. I apologize for the quality. I use my phone, which is a Motorola Hint QA30. Pretty good phone & decent camera. My ex wife took our good camera. Small price to pay to get rid of her!! LoL

Started with a lovely "celery green metallic", vintage 1986 Suzuki Savage. She had 17,400 miles on the clicker. I started looking for a good deal on a savage about 2 years ago. I've wanted to build a bobber (or pseudo-bobber) for the last few years and after some research I knew the savage was a perfect candidate.

I must admit, I'm not particularly a Suzuki fan. Several years ago I owned an 82 GS650e that would do 125mph. Good bike, but yeah, not smart!! In my defense, I was in my early 20's & invincible!! I also had a gsx550es for a period as well. For metrics, I lean more toward Yamaha. Been riding Yamaha quads for years. Don't hate me, I'm basically an fan of air cooled bikes (& cars) and besides HD, Yamaha has some nice air cooled bikes. That's one thing I love about the savage... Air Kooled & Old Skooled!!

I guess that brings me to my love for the old VW's. You might notice hiding in the shop is my old woods buggy. I've got more money & time tied up in that thing than I care to mention. 2054cc w/ 110 cam & 1.25 rockers, dual weber idf 40s w/ big vents, Big valve heads w/ p&p, 5 rib trans w/ superdiff, 2x3 arms, chevy disk brakes, cutter brakes... Blah, blah, blah... I know, get back to bike talking already!!! Ok, Ok.. Pretty mean machine though and climbs hills like a goat.

So here we go...

Alright... Got the frame de-greased and cleaned up. I picked up my fender at Tractor Supply. I like the fact that it has a somewhat rounded profile & deeper sides than the standard flat fender. After some measuring, I think I cut 3" off the bottom end & 4" off the top end.

Here it is doing a test fit and some 'cipherin...

That alone was about a 4 hour job but much more satisfying when you build it on your own instead of clicking "but it now" on ebay for $30!!! I must say this thread has been very enjoyable to read/see.  I'm not much into bobbers, but it amazes me that you guys can tear something apart so completely, and put it all back together.  I would never trust anything I took apart to that extent!  But I guess that's one of the simple beauties of this bike.

And your wit is enjoyable too, I dig the Model-A light, and Mason is adorable!!    ;)

Thank ya, baby!!
Mason is my pride and joy! I can't wait til he's old enough for us to be building him a junked-up, no resale value, POS deathtrap!! LoL, sorry, couldn't resist...

Scott, I'd say get it running first. One less thing to worry about that way. I knew mine was running good and thanks to this forum, I knew it was probably due for a cam chain. Easy enough to do and I don't even own a Clymer's manual! All the info you need is readily available right here on Suzukisavage.com!!! (nice plug, huh?) An occasional glance at ronayers.com micro fiche pics doesn't hurt either. Lots of kewl folks on here too to help you out if/ when you need it.

I gotta say, I really appreciate the positive responses from yall. I started posting this build on another forum as well, but I didn't get the love like I got here. That means a lot to me & I really do appreciate it. I have since abandoned that "other" forum... I'm gonna concentrate my efforts here where the folks (well, most of 'em) appreciate it. So thanks!!

Still waiting on the cam chain to get here so now it's time to get rid of that eyesore fugly green paint the PO was so proud of. He didn't tell me he had fixed a couple dents on the top of the tank... Well, he didn't have to tell me, I could see 'em plain as day! No worries though... It's nothing a lot of sanding, paint stripper, wire wheels & a little bondo won't cure. I had an "oh shyt" moment while working on the tank. Went to hang it on my A frame and the other end of the wire wasn't hooked very well...  Dropped the dag-gone thing on it's end right into the gravel... CRAP!!! Oh well, one more dent to fix... LoL

Here's a shot of "MY" dent...

I originally planned for it to be flat blue. Kinda like the Harley flat denim color. So I shot it with some Hot Rod Flatz "midnight blue" paint. After staring at it for a few days, I just wasn't feeling the love for it. You might say it was giving me the "blues"... LoL. The pics of it in gray primer inspired me to go with a lighter color. Then after a lot of thought and a few sleepless nights, I decided on the white.

Cam chain was waiting on me when I got home this day. Time for some engine work! I wasn't aiming to take the head off, but that's what happens when one of the bolts breaks off in it... DANGIT!!! Oh well, let's dig out the drill bits and easy outs... Broke one of them off too!! CRAP!!! I gotta say, I had a heck of a time getting that thing out!! Didn't get any pics of it, I wasn't in a very good mood and honestly didn't think about it. Plus it's not very handy to dig your phone outta your pocket when working on your engine. I had oil & grease up to my elbows like I had just got done eating a bucket of KFC!! LoL

Having the head off gave me a good reason to "massage" the intake & exhaust ports... Especially that exhaust port. I took off the oh so restrictive "ledge" and opened it up to match the diameter of the pipe. Nothing real aggressive, but she should breath a lot better now! The intake side basically just got the stud removed and a little cleaning at the seams. Again, no pics but there are some good ones in the forums if anyone is interested in doing this. A good bur bit on your favorite cordless drill and a lot of patience is all it takes. Be careful, precise, and take your time!!!

Here's a few random shots of the engine with the head off... Look how nasty those case covers are!! I started to polish them out, but dang that's a lot of work!!! I ended up painting them with high temp paint and just polished out the oil filter cover & pulley cover. Turned out pretty decent in the end, I think...
http://i44.tinypic.com/vhf285.jpg
Everything looked good. The piston was a little dirty from running a little rich, but the cylinder walls looked good and there was a minimal ring ridge. That's a good sign that it was getting properly lubed, especially with 17k+ miles... I was happy about this!
http://i44.tinypic.com/2mnhvew.jpg
Pretty clean inside...
http://i41.tinypic.com/oshg8p.jpg

Got the new cam chain in & head bolt replaced. My local dealer actually had a new head gasket & exhaust gasket in stock... Sweet! Time to button this jewel back up! I put a slight bend on the tension guide (as suggested in another post... Thanks!) but didn't do the adjuster mod. Believe me, I wanted to. The thing is, at this point I'm running low on fundage and knowing me I'll be wanting one of those stage 1 or maybe stage 2 cams in the next year or so anyway. (You know, maybe a winter project/ X-mas present!!) I'll do it then... Until that time, I know I've got a good 15-20k miles before I need to worry about the cam chain adjuster again.

7.5mm of adjuster showing... I think I'm in good shape for a while...

Hey, just to let you know... I have been working a little today. It's not all fun and games! Just tested a couple circuits, but it really is pretty slow around here today...

Here's a couple shots I thought I'd share. You might have heard about all the flooding we got a couple weeks ago. This is what it kinda looked like one day when I had to run downtown to the courthouse on my lunch break...

http://i41.tinypic.com/2qdbf5z.jpg

My seat showed up!! Had it shipped to the office...
http://i42.tinypic.com/2m31thl.jpg

Fast forward a little bit... I didn't get a lot of pics of the reassembly. Sorry 'bout that, I guess I was so excited to get this thing together that I just didn't stop to take pics. You can see here that I built a battery tray out of the old battery box cover. I had to cut it down, then added an aluminum strap on the other side to box it in. I plan to get a short black leather belt made up down at the flea-market to go over & secure the battery. (yeah, I like the flea-market!! Might get me a funnel cake & a sack of boiled peanuts too!!) Haven't got it yet so it's being held in with a velcro strap right now. It ain't going anywhere, but I think the leather belt with a cool buckle will look pretty sick.

You can also kinda see how I boxed in the rear of the frame to hide all the electronical goodies. That's changed a little since I hacked off the rear of the frame some but it's still kinda there... Mostly.

Got the cables & wiring harness all ran and secured. Ended up moving the throttle cable later on... Was not cool when you turn the bars and it revs like you're sitting at a stoplight fixin to smoke a sportster!!! LoL
Luckily the wiring harness was in good shape and un-molested. I'm using everything but the horn so that worked out good!

A peek at one of my mini signals mounted in the old seat mount. How sick is that?? Perfect fit!

Fast forward again. Sorry the pics are getting scarce at this point... Time to mount those new tires! I was gonna take them into town & get it done, but hell, we used to change 'em on dirtbikes when I was a kid. Can't be too hard! Don't pinch the tube & do a lot of reading on how to balance them out... No Problems!! It actually went really smooth. Line up the paint dot on the tire (lightest spot) with the heaviest spot on your wheel. (you read up on balancing... right??) Balance again and use one of the spoke weights you took off, if you need to. I needed one on the front, none on the rear. Awesome! Another project I did myself and saved some green!! Couldn't be happier!!

I guess you'll notice it's painted too. Trust me when I say painting is NOT MY THING!!! I can weld, wrench, swing a hammer, cut, drill, poke, punch and bend, but the mysteries of the perfect paint job is beyond me. I understand what it takes, it's just... I dunno... I guess me and the paint gun don't get along very well. I decided to take a chance and picked up some "industrial" Rust-oleum from Lowes. I knew that if it didn't work out, I would have to take it to be professionally sprayed. The secret is in the preparation and the finishing... OK, got it... I cleaned & sanded, shot the primer, wet sanded & got it looking pretty good. Primer is easy. After a couple days I set everything up in my paint booth again and started shooting the white. 2 thin coats and 2 good wet coats. It set up for a couple more days and was wet sanded with 1000, then 1500, then I rubbed it out by hand with 3M rubbing compound. I gotta say I was really surprised how good it turned out! Now I know it may never hold up, but I'm cool with that. Once again saved me a bunch of cash and it's good enough that it doesn't embarrass me... Whew!!

So that pretty much gets us up to date...
http://i42.tinypic.com/uvxcp.jpg

I'll be finishing up the forward controls tonight... I hope.

I also need to pull the front brake caliper and figure out why it's dragging. Not sticking, but seems to drag more than I like. I flushed the old fluid out of the system & bled it, so my next step is to clean up the caliper & see what happens. Shouldn't be too bad of a chore.

Still gotta replace that broken turn signal & do a really good check to make sure all the bolts & everything are tight. I noticed my oil drain plug is leaking too, so probably needs a new washer.

It's been a fun journey so far and I'm really proud of how it's turned out. I guess that's why it's kinda hard to take the negative comments. That's cool though, put as much work into your bike as I have mine and we'll see who's laughing in the end!!! You can never understand how much goes into something like this until you actually do it yourself. I've enjoyed it thoroughly!!

Here you can see my front signals. Yes they are small and too close together but I really didn't have a lot of options without making some kinda big gawdy bracket. I was gonna just run without them & use hand signals but after a while that seemed less and less like a good idea. I made a little bracket that mounts under the headlight housing. The signals point out at an angle to kinda match the way the rears are. Is it perfect? Nope! Does it work? Hells yeah! I can live with it...

I think bar end or bar mount signals would look good and be a lot more visible. I cant imagine Id notice those little signal lights up under the seat or right under the headlight.

Hey thanks yall!

LoL... savagedml, you ain't joking brother!! Sure looks a lot easier when you're reading it! There's no way to include everything that's gotta be done... Like hitting every single bolt head with the wire wheel to clean them up before you put them back in, or the hours of staring at something trying to figure out a good way to do it... Like those dang front signals! I don't know how much time I spent off and on trying to figure out something to do with them. Still not completely happy w/ them but I can sure live w/ it. Then there's all the measuring, & test fitting, & more measuring, & figuring, etc, etc, etc... Takes a while to do even the simplest things.

BurnPgh, I hear you man! I thought about the bar end signals. Even watched a few on ebay. They also make some integrated into the mirrors. I happened to stop at a truckstop one day while I was out working & found my minis. You'd be surprised how bright they are. I don't think the rears are gonna be any problem. You can see them for sure. The fronts now, well... I hate to beat a dead horse, although I don't think they're as bad as you imagine. I'd like to get some video of it. I have the ability to do so, just gotta get everything together & do it sometime. I try to ride like my life depends on it, mainly because it does! With or without signals, the cell phone yappin soccer mom still ain't gonna see you. Just gotta be defensive & stay alert.

LostArtist...
My garage... The shop (that's what we call it)... My man-cave... My oasis!!! I built that thing 4 years ago & tried to make it just like I wanted. I wish I had insulated it, you can feel the heat coming off the roof like a radiant heater sometimes when it's hot outside & the sun is beating down. Also can get cold out there in the winter but I can knock the worst of the chill off if I crank up the wood stove & keep it roaring. I love my shop man, you can have the house, just let me in to take a shower once a week and I'd be happy!! LoL

Maybe not this one exactly since I'd wanna check the length on it to be sure, but it's 7" wide (perfect) and has a nice profile to it...

Another crappy, rainy day here in the mid-south so no riding today. I did make it down to get my black leather battery strap made yesterday. It matches the seat nicely and cinches down good and tight. The leather lady made it from scrap & only charged me $10!

My next project is to find something to use as a single swingarm bag. My last scoot got a cool black canvas military type bag I picked up at a surplus store. It was durable, weatherproof & would hold a lot. It worked great and I may go that route again although this time I'm thinking more black leather...

Well it rained all friggin day yesterday so I got the oil changed in my truck then started playing around with the savage a little.
I had some leftover roll bar tubing (1" x .083 wall) so I bent up some drag bars just to see what it would look like. I didn't look at any bars to get a feel for what looks good, just started measuring and bending. This is what I came up with, they are 33" wide. I think the controls would clear if I used them, but not sure. Just playing around anyway...

I also did some playing around with the mirrors. I always thought my mirrors looked big perched up on those apes, so this was the obvious next step. I think I might rock it like this for a few days and see how I like it, but I do wish it was on the other side. It stopped raining for a little while, long enough to roll out & take a few pics...

I'd like some honest opinions on it. I already know it's not as safe & I'll only see half the fun... (may have to name this bike "barely legal")
Just opinions on how it looks... Thanks!

eh...not great. doesnt looks too bad, doesnt look too good, but it does allow less visibility of what's behind you and I add that as a con. No obvious pros I can see. I didnt think it looked bad with the mirrors upright.

You just need some cool lookin mirrors, that don't stick up quite so far.  Could you trim and re-thread the support?  Or make new rods?  I don't know.  I think the shape of the mirror needs to be more "rockin'" too.... to match that rockin bike!  Aren't you glad you asked for opinions?  LOL

These are expensive, but this is something like what's in my mind on that bike:

There are flame mirrors all over ebay pretty cheap. I haven't fallen in love with any of them though.

I Got another "NAY" from a friend, but got a "YAY" from my brother. It's starting to grow on me some, so I dunno. I kinda go against the grain sometimes anyway...

For me, its about personal preference and feeling of accomplishment.  I am very mechanically challenge but always wanted to work on cars or bikes.  Now I have a bike to play with... so I tear off the stuff I don't need or like and put stuff that is more to my taste.  For example:

1.  Stock muffler (not loud enough)
2.  Seat (I will never carry passenger so pillion is not needed.  Stock is uncomfortable for me)
3.  Re-locate rear lights (I needed to install big saddlebag, and I also broke one)
4.  Belt cover (why cover the beautiful belt)
5.  New light bulb (stock is too dim)
etc.

Hey thanks y'all!!!

It's been real & it's been fun... But it didn't get real fun til I got 'er done!!
LoL, sorry... Feeling poetic tonight

The rear fender is 19.25" long. I didn't plan it that way, just went by looks til I thought it was right. The back edge of the fender is directly above the center of the axle. If I was gonna do it again (and I might) I'd probably add a couple inches to it. Maybe go like 21 or 21.5" total. I'm a fair weather rider, but I've noticed that I get a nice little spray on the small of my back if I hit a wet spot in the road. I expected it since it's so short, and it's not that bad, I just think a couple inches would make a noticeable difference. (story of my life!!) It also occasionally throws up sand and road debris which I sometimes feel hitting my back since the wind pulls my shirt up a little. It doesn't hurt at all, just kinda made me go WTF??? the first time it happened.

Sorry Tfp, you asked a simple question but got a friggin storybook answer!!

I guess now is a good time for a little update...

I've been riding the piss outta this thing the last couple weeks. Been trying to tune out a gear-shift backfire and occasional erratic idle. Seems to idle down once it gets good and hot like after a hard 10- 15 mile run, then sitting at a light. It's been 85*- 90* and sticky- icky focking humid so maybe that factors in. I'm gonna look at the plug, change the oil and check the valve adjustment one night this week. It's just hard to let it sit long enough since you gotta check the valves with a stone cold engine.

It really shines when you crank it back and let it sing! I can roll out of a 25mph curve in high gear without a downshift. At partial throttle pull, it wants to jump a little but is easily fixed by opening it up. I'm very impressed with the bottom end lugging, even though I went with a huge rear tire. I opened up the head pretty good mainly on the exhaust side so I think that's what makes her really come alive. Not sorry about that! Now I wonder what one of Lancer's super carbs would feel like... (Dear Santa..)

This is really a fun little bike & surprisingly comfortable too. It's super nimble and with my center mass a little lower it takes curves like it's on rails... I'm talking almost sportbike like handling. The solo seat is one of the best feeling seats my a$$ has had the pleasure of meeting. I'm tickled with the way it rides. The bars are shoulder height and really comfortable. Any higher would be too much for the longer rides. The low seat, high bars & forward controls really let you stretch out and feels like a larger bike. The balance is right on.

I added a throttle rocker since the last pics. Not sure if I'll keep it or not... I've used them before, but the savage seems to have such a long throttle twist. I dunno, time will tell... Might pitch it in the ditch tomorrow, who knows?

Speedo seems to be about ~3 mph slow at 55, ~5 mph slow at 70. This isn't verified yet, just judging by flow of traffic. I'll put my gps in my pocket one day and check it... Maybe...

I guess all in all my few complaints are not that big a deal. I'm happy with it and look forward to punishing it daily.

Oh, and don't worry about Mick... He's a grumpy 'ol bloke stuck in his ways. I have become a magnet for criticism around here but I'm cool with it.
Not everyone can understand what it's all about, but WE do. It's not like cutting up an antique, collectible, high dollar bike... It's a bottom end, overlooked, cheap bike. It's a good bike, but not one that hurts my feelings to be hacked. I bought the savage to chop up. I actively looked for one for 2 years off and on. I knew this was the perfect bike to "fix". It's my bike, it's my money, it's my a$$ rocking out on a lowball custom... Just the way I pictured it. (subject to change on a whim!!)
