I checked into trying to get it street legal before I bought my Ninja but I couldnt do it here in NC. Back in the 90's Aprilia factory reps were at the local Ducati shop. The owner was bragging to the Aprilia guys about my riding skills (HE LIED). But anyway the Aprilia guys wanted me to meet them at VIR Raceway which had just reopened. I laughed all day and all that night but I met them that Saturday. I signed some release forms and promise of payment if I wrecked the bike They put me on their latest two stroke 250 Grand Prix bike. They were trying to sale them to privateers. I made about 3 cautious laps familiarising myself with the road course and picking out landmarks. Then I thought what the Hell, its a great day to die and I turned her loose. That was one sweet handling screaming me me. They clocked me at 140+ on the longest straight. Got her a little sideways in an uphill right hander but I jammed down a gear, poured on the throttle and wheelied out of it just like I meant to do it all along. Four laps was about all my nerves could take of that and I was beginning to tire so I pulled her into the pits with probably the biggest grin ever on my ugly mug. The reps sat down with me and offered me the bike for $7000 and said they would pay me $500 for every top 10 finish. I had just turned 40 and a little birdie told me I might be getting a little to old for this and I had made some phone calls the night before. Racing tires were around $300 and good for one race and every two races you had to rebuild the top end. Piston and rings were over $200 so I would have had to finish top ten every race to break even. I told the reps thanks for the opportunity, Ive had a great time but right now I havent got the time to devote to it. I was working a full time job and I hadnt found my next wife. I jumped on my Triumph Daytona and hightailed it back to NC before I changed my mind. |
