...so?  DO-THEY-WORK?

Do they make a real difference at 5x the price?

- more power?
- more high/low/mid end?
- more complete combustion?
- better mileage?
- placebo sparkplug (you just think it works better)?
- what?

(cause i'm thinking about ordering one, thanks)

They do last longer. My corolla had 120.000Km plug replacement interval, $6 a piece, NGK iridum, can't remember which. $6 is nothing. Can't vouch for better mileage, higher power output, etc.

In marginal conditions iridium plugs show some advantage over a normal plug.  An iridium plug will fire at a reduced voltage scenario where a normal plug would not spark.   They will fire when oily when a normal plug would foul out.

Beyond that, they will last a bit longer because the center electrode will not evaporate.  The hook will eventually go away though, just like a normal plug.

Those are the only advantages.

You can argue that they are NOT worth the extra dollars, although even I own one because of the marginal advantages.

We only have one plug, so make it a good 'un.

I used one in my Savage, and I'm about to use 4 in my Miata.
they might be a placebo, not sure, but then I change my oil every 500 miles,on the bike,it just made me feel good,I also use nothing but premium gas....................................??? in my car.

KLX's have a reputation for a weak coil so I fit an iridium to make up for that. First fire after six months she started 6-7 turns. I used to fit NGK B9EV in my 350LC definately made a difference in a two smoke.

You know, I was wondering...since the price of gas has been so high for so long. and most people now use only the cheapest gas, how old is the premium gas? How long has it been sitting around in those gas station tanks?

Title: Re: Iridium

Premium gas tanks are rarely filled more that a quarter of the way up at any time (stations don't buy much at a time)

Distributors tanks are rarely ever over half full ....

Condensation water, sediments, crap all are increased accordingly.

And MUCH greater age, yup, some more of that "vintage" premium gasoline for your motorcycle, mister?

I saw on the History channel that Iridium comes from meteorites... It only forms in space...

Space metal!..
Ooooh!... I like the idea of that... :-?...
But I don't want it hidden away in my spark plug hole...  I want it mounted in my speedometer or something, where it shows... or maybe in the headlight?...
;D ;D ;D...

There are thousands upon thousands of Mazda Miatas ,they all call for premium,so do all Jaguars, Lotus, Bently's ,Rolls Royce, and many many more just about all sports cars.
there is a gas station not far from here that sells Racing fuel,"But only in a can" if you can find some try a tank full ,you will think you are on another bike, talk about zoom zoom zoom !
By the way my bike went way better on premium,if there is any crap in there I didn't notice,I also put in my ninja.good stuff.

An iridium plug will fire at a reduced voltage scenario

im sold! i hate pushing, it's not so much annoying as it is embarrassing,
the rest of the real or placebo benefits are welcomed too  ;)

(and thanks for that inside scoop on premium gas, makes total sense!)

lucky you only had to get one,I just got 4  $27.96 or $6.99 a piece
Oh well it's for my baby,I shall put them in just before my vacation run.

I can't speak for the third generation Miata but the first two generations (1989-2005) all run on regular and have regular recommended in the owner's manual.  (I own one, Mom's had two).  The exception would be the MazdaSpeed turbo Miata.  But lot's of guys use premium so that they can advance the timing for more power without getting pinging.
When I bought my supercharger it came with a sticker to put inside the filler door that says "Premium Fuel Required."
I was just reading a thread on Intruder Alert where some guys felt their bikes run better on regular.
I've always believed that unless you retune to take advantage of the better gas the machine will not run any differently.

Jef,glad you commented I didn't get a owners manuel, with mine and it's a 93 so regular gas is ok,I had just heard that Miatas ran on premium, so it's just the later ones, thanks for the info.
So what's the story on superchargers ? are they really worth the mony ? how many more pony's ? ,any more helpful stuff about this great little car would be nice if you find the time, mine has just under a 100 thousand on it. thanks mate.

If your engine doesn't require premium, you really don't gain any performance by using it. The higher octane fuel equates to the mixture having a higher resistance to ignition. It can handle the high compression and/ or advanced timing of performance engines without detonation...

Having said that, I have some friends who swear by 108 octane race fuel, running it in air cooled v-dubs, claiming they can tell a difference. I dunno, I'm guilty of using it from time to time in my dub too. ($7-$8/ gal) It sure smells good!! If nothing else, the premium gas usually has better additives in it which equals a cleaner engine.

Mick, I bought my Miata new in 1991 and have always loved it.  Even though it has plenty of zip I felt it was a bit underpowered for a real sports car.  When I looked into adding more power I read that a turbo or supercharged Miata would go through a stock clutch in about a week so I forgot about it for a while.  But when I had to replace the clutch at about 88k I used an ACT Stage I which would handle the extra power.  So I bought the Jackson Racing Supercharger kit and had my local garage install it.  It makes about 6 lbs of boost for a hp increase of about 40%.  So it went from 113hp to somewhere around 158hp.  Yeah, I thought it was worth it!  The stock 0-60 time is advertised as 9.3.  I timed it at 7.02 on my first try.
Of course anyone on here can tell you that once you start modding it's a slippery slope.  Soon I added the boost upgrade which gets you about 12lbs of boost.  Then a high flow exhaust. Then a header. Then I blew my rear end and got a limited slip out of a '95.  Added the bigger '95 brakes while I was at it.  And on and on.  0-60 now is about 6 seconds.
The supercharger is bypassed until you step on the gas so there's no difference in drivability, just a lot more power when you want it.
That said, after a few years it failed it's emissions test and no one could figure out why.  I was saved by Mass laws changing to exempt cars before a certain year.  Right now it runs very strong but doesn't idle well and again no one can figure out why.  There's a guy out in Marlboro who specializes in modified Miatas who could probably fix it but that's about an hour from here.  Right now it's still in winter storage while I get my bikes going then I've gotta figure out what to do with it.  Lots of info at http://www.miatamania.com/
But if you want to go REALLY fast I think turbo is the way to go, look here http://www.flyinmiata.com/
And lots of good info at http://miata.net/

>snip<

The unusually high abundance of iridium in the clay layer at the K–T geologic boundary gave rise to the Alvarez hypothesis, which suggests that the impact of a massive extraterrestrial object caused the extinction of dinosaurs and many other species 65 million years ago. Iridium is found in meteorites with an abundance much higher than its average abundance in the Earth's crust. It is thought that the amount of iridium in the planet Earth is much higher than that observed in crustal rocks, but because of the high density and tendency of iridium to bond with iron, most iridium descended below the crust and into the Earth's core when the planet was young and still molten.

Iridium is the second densest element (after osmium) and is the most corrosion-resistant metal, even at temperatures as high as 2000 °.
Iridium is used in high-end after-market sparkplugs as the center electrode, replacing more commonly-used metals. The claimed benefits are greater economy and improved acceleration.
