Title: They're out there baby.
Post by Starlifter on 06/03/10 at 22:06:13

Two potential signatures of life on Saturn's moon Titan have been found by the Cassini spacecraft. But scientists are quick to point out that non-biological chemical reactions could also be behind the observations.

Titan is much too cold to support liquid water on its surface, but some scientists have suggested that exotic life-forms could live in the lakes of liquid methane or ethane that dot the moon's surface.

In 2005, Chris McKay of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field and Heather R Smith of the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, calculated that such microbes could eke out an existence by breathing in hydrogen gas and eating the organic molecule acetylene, creating methane in the process.

This would result in a lack of acetylene on Titan and a depletion of hydrogen close to the moon's surface, where the microbes would live, they said.

Now, measurements from the Cassini spacecraft have borne out these predictions, hinting that life may be present.

They are going to invade and steal all our welding gas cylinders for their orgies!

If they create methane as a by product of consuming other chemicals, it must smell really nice up there.

I wonder if they light their farts?

Clearly, the meaning of life is to be able to create methane. I know Ive met many who seem to believe that. As long as they can fart, theyre happy.

but to be truly happy one must fart in the presence of a lady. And then after the toot look at her with distain. >:(

Have you noticed,... most foods that are good for you,   are gassy?...
... beans, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, peas....
...'cept  for fried chicken...   that's the exception that proves the rule...

Fart, in front of a lady?,.. never!...
.. part of why I'm still single,...  couldn't possibly hold my gas that long...
... and, of course,...  a lady never farts...:-?...

blissfully delusional... ;)... sorta'... :-?...

Plus, if they grow acethylene for food, and breathe hydrogen - I think they know better then light a fart!!  ;)

I used to think lady's didn't ,but after 6 wives and a sister I can assure you they do (except maybe the queen) , the only difference women try to keep them quiet and actually go to the bathroom just for that reason, men on the other hand really enjoy farting ,while in the army it was standard to have farting and belching compatisions.

Hey why fart and waste it when you can belch and taste it ;D ;D ;D. We can find a gutter even in outer space

...sigh, "farts"...why do I bother...

But what the hey, if ya don't want to go too deep...it is funny.   :)

Data from Nasa's Cassini probe has analysed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon around the planet to have a dense atmosphere.

They have discovered that life forms have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel.

Astronomers claim the moon is generally too cold to support even liquid water on its surface.

The research has been detailed in two separate studies.

The first paper, in the journal Icarus, shows that hydrogen gas flowing throughout the planet’s atmosphere disappeared at the surface. This suggested that alien forms could in fact breathe.

The second paper, in the Journal of Geophysical Research, concluded that there was lack of the chemical on the surface.

Scientists were then led to believe it had been possibly consumed by life.

Researchers had expected sunlight interacting with chemicals in the atmosphere to produce acetylene gas. But the Cassini probe did not detect any such gas.

Chris McKay, an astrobiologist at Nasa Ames Research Centre, at Moffett Field, California who led the research, said: “We suggested hydrogen consumption because it's the obvious gas for life to consume on Titan, similar to the way we consume oxygen on Earth.

"If these signs do turn out to be a sign of life, it would be doubly exciting because it would represent a second form of life independent from water-based life on Earth.”

Professor John Zarnecki, of the Open University, added: “We believe the chemistry is there for life to form. It just needs heat and warmth to kick-start the process.

“In four billion years’ time, when the Sun swells into a red giant, it could be paradise on Titan.”

They warned, however, that there could be other explanations for the findings.

But taken together, they two indicate two important conditions necessary for methane-based life to exist.

This is really exciting newa because heretofore everyone believed that only carbon / water life could exist.

With these new findings it appears that the universe could be teeming with life.

now I'm worried in 10 billion years is the sun going to explode ?
or just grow a bit more. I tell ya I can hardley wait ;)
I never did believe we were the only forms of life in the universe.
Boy this god guy sure has his hands full.

Life on this planet is made for life on this planet,Life on another planet would be made for that planet,It wouldn't have to have the same air and water we have.It just stands to reason that were not the only thing in this hole solar system.

Yup, read the article somewhere else last week,
pretty interesting stuff. Could be geo-farts,
could be pond muck, could be an advanced
species so smart that wants nothing to do with us.

What i still don't understand is what is the big deal/debate?

I mean OF COURSE there is life elsewhere, why on earth wouldn't there be ?!  :-?

Of course, the reason for a lack of acetylene and hydrogen could also be that it just wasn't there in the first place ................ ::)

the problem is Stimpy all the born agains will be up in arms , they would have a very hard time thinking god made another world with life on it, What day of the week did he make this one ? Plus no other worlds get a mention in the bible,so it isn't true.

Oh right, I forgot about that.
My quick views.

* Creator God:
I don't know and you don't know either, period.

* Life elsewhere in the Universe:
I don't know but math and logic say YES. A simple equation
shows that at least 10,000,000,000 (ten billion) planets in
the known universe are capable of producing "our type" of
carbon based life, and this is excluding silicon & ammonia
based lifeforms and conscious energy (proven to exist, yet
still unexplained, by science since the 1950's), yikes.

I always liked the saying (can't remember who said it) that it was the height of conceit to think that we were the only life in the entire universe.  As Stimpy said, the odds are just against us being alone.

As far as what it could look like, I remember seeing on some science type show that it most likeley wouldn't be in any form familiar to us, even if it did develop on a similar type planet.  On a planet with a radically different environment?  Could end up with super intelligent Jello! ;D
