Title: Detachable Flywheel
Post by klx650sm2002 on 06/11/10 at 10:07:38

The GR650 came out in the mid '80s (uk) and the thing that made it stick in my mind was the flywheel that was attached at low rpm and detached at high rpm otherwise I wouldn't have remembered it. And here it is as a street tracker.

Fascinating.. how did the flywheel engage and disengage?  I would guess similar to a compression release?   Or a centrifugal go-kart clutch, but in reverse.

I had 2 Suzuki GR 650s I think it worked like a snowmobile clutch,At about 3500rpms part of the flywheel was free spinning.

Yes centrifugal, go-kart clutch in reverse. Must feel a bit strange engaging and disengaging.

You didn't feel it engage or disengage but the bike seem to turn on when it went to only 1/2 or what ever it split at.
