Title: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by photojoe on 06/11/10 at 13:59:01 Wonderful feeling earlier today whipping through twisties when I feel a stinging sensation just under the chin strap on the lid. Kept digging in there, thought that the strap was catching part of my 3 day no-shave stubble. With a cage on my tail at around 45 mph, and no place to pull over the stinging moved down to my shoulders. I leaned over, looked in the mirror, and there was the nastiest looking wasp I ever did see, and mind you, I've seen a lot in my 50 years, crawling on my skin, just above the collar of my t-shirt. Bastardo got me 4 times. Started to feel dizzy and found a place to pull over to put some alcohol on the welts. Life on the road eh, taking the good with the bad. Yeah, the little bugger got me eh, eh eh. |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by Tanker2Biker on 06/11/10 at 16:01:48 It doesn't take multiple stings to suck. I wear a full face helmet, and I had a bee slip in between my face and the helmet. Stung me on the temple. By the time I could pull over and stop, It had swolen up to the point it hurt too much to put the helmet back on, and I chose to ride home without it. Took some Benadryl and put some ice on it, and it reduced by the next morning. |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by mornhm - FSO on 06/11/10 at 16:38:29 Yeah, wasp stings are bad. My wife got one on her back one time and it walked across (OK maybe it ran, I don't know) and before she could get it off stung her about a dozen times or more. Before it swelled up, it looked like someone had run a sewing machine on her. I'm having trouble now keeping from laughing (it was funny to me). I had one hit me in the helmet one time, and I thought, well that's going to make a mess, then I felt something crawling around my scalp. So I pulled to the side, tore my helmet off, and there the wasp was, crawling around stinging the heck out of the helmet liner. Lucky for me she didn't end up feet down on my scalp. Anyway, she flew off seemingly no worse for the wear. The the front vents on my helmet is only about 3-4 mm across - she was bigger than that. Must have been a real santa clause/chimney moment. |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by kimchris1 on 06/11/10 at 17:21:45 I am not sure if this works on Wasps. Yet it does on Bee stings. Take a cigarette if you have them. Break it and wet the tobacco and apply to sting area. This takes the sting as well as helps with the swelling. I personally know this works on again bee stings. This is just one of the lessons I remember from my loving Grandmother and have passed on down the line.. |
Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by drharveys on 06/11/10 at 17:24:23 One of the creatures that likes my boat even more than I do are our local mud-dauber wasps. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Boat%20and%20Marina/black-and-yellow-mud-dauber.jpg They make these mud nests that dry up and protect the larvae as they metamorphose from pupae into the next generation of mud-daubers: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Boat%20and%20Marina/Muddaubernest.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Boat%20and%20Marina/Muddauber2.jpg I am constantly knocking the mud tubes into the river, along with whatever (if anything) is inside. On the plus side, they're not very aggressive, and the parent wasps do not protect the nests. One time I was rudely surprised when what I thought was a mud dauber was a regular wasp -- and I located the paper nest just after I squashed the thing when it bit me! |
Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by drharveys on 06/11/10 at 17:26:09 When it comes to insects, I prefer the bee family. They don't bother you unless you actively disturb them. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Bee2a.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Bee1a.jpg Plus they hang out around some pretty photogenic backgrounds! |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by BurnPgh on 06/12/10 at 00:36:18 count your blessings. I've only been riding 3 years and have been stung repeatedly in the armpit, of all places, twice. Seems something about my jacket just scoops them up and funnels them in to one of the top 5 worst places to be stung. |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by JohnBoy on 06/12/10 at 10:50:42 A couple of years ago in Scottsdale, AZ a female motor cop caught a wasp under her faceplate. It stung her more than once, and she lost control and crashed into a large stone. Several broken bones and weeks in hospital. A 1/4 oz insect came within a knats a$$ of killing a 120 lb woman. |
Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by Rogue_Cheddar on 06/12/10 at 12:18:33 About a week ago I was riding along and got hit right in the adams apple by a bumble bee at 55 mph. It didn't sting me, but, the collision hurt like hell. I realized my jacket was only zipped at the bottom and I was afraid it might have scooped up in there, so was waiting for additional pain to come. Didn't happen so I guess it didn't survive the initial impact. From then on I always zip up my jacket as far as it will go no matter how warm it is. I'm currently running without a shield so I've been catching a lot of bugs lately. Took one on the side of the nose the other day, I thought I'd been shot with a bb gun. Better save up for a full face helmet I guess. :D |
Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by Starlifter on 06/12/10 at 14:09:07 Ah yes, everyone has a story. Mine is of a wasp that flew inside my shirt during a 20 mile bicycle ride. It stung and stung untill I was able to squish the bugger. :o |
Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by Trippah on 06/12/10 at 14:12:48 Back in '63 (Heaven Help me!) on rte 128 near Boston, bee hit my eyebrow and ended up between my glases lens and my right eyeball. Bee kinda involutarily moving its legs on my eyeball. Stopped the bike (305 Honda Superhawk thank you)as fast as I could, jumped off and threw the glasses on the ground. Poor little beastie fell off my eye which thankfully it didn't sting. Don't EVER want to try that again. :o |

Yes, it works for waspers too! That's an old trick & a good one to pass on! Chewing tobacco or dip works too... drharveys... I feel your pain, around here we call them dirt-dobbers. They build nests everywhere. I bet I can go out and find 5 or 6 right now... My boss's bike was running crappy the other day. We checked his fuel filter -good, checked his air filter and had a big dirt-dobber nest up in it. It was originally in a spot that was out of the way but had fell down blocking the airway. They are annoying as hell but like you said, harmless. Those honey bees aren't bad unless they're Africanized. Luckily they haven't made it to this part of the country... yet! My buddy had a big bee in his shirt when we stopped for a drink today. He didn't even know it until we were inside & he felt it crawling around. A quick shirt shake and it was loose in the store. No harm done. I hate when you hit a june-bug or something while going about 70mph. Those suckers are hard & they'll bring tears to your eyes if they hit you in the right spot! |

Title: Re: Did you know that wasps don't stop stinging? Post by stinger on 06/14/10 at 02:54:20 Actually once when I rode my Savage from Portland to Illinois, I got beat up in a rest area with another biker. They stole my coat, helmet, money, camera etc. Knocked a tooth out and my eye was already swollen from being hit. While I was sitting on the picnic table with a ambulance driver, a darn bee stung me in the adams apple. A day later I was trying to ride with a swollen lip, eye, and neck from the bee sting. I had another bee get stuck between the helmet the police dept gave me, and my cheek bone! I looked like something out of a horror movie. |
