Title: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by earlytimz on 06/13/10 at 18:12:56

We rode a lot yesterday & had a really good time even though the heat was stifling! It felt so good to go through the trees, it was like temporary air conditioning... LoL

I waited til late this afternoon, after the heat of the day & got out for a little while. Didn't have anywhere to go, just got tired of being at the house. I stopped on the old iron bridge that crosses the Barren river just outside of Bowling Green. I love this old one-lane bridge...

Here's yours truly... Yeah, my face got a little red from riding for hours yesterday. Don't care though, I love it...

Here's a couple kayak'ers enjoying the river. You can see it's quite a drop...

What took y'all so long??

Why don't both of y'all (Mick and Bill) please stop following me around. It never fails...
I'm not gonna say this again, so listen up. I got your private messages... Trust me, no matter how much you stalk me, I'm not gonna send you any naked pictures of me! I'm open minded and all, but this is getting a little too weird. No means No, respect that!

I must say it's a little flattering Mick. You think I'm so cool that nothing but the coolest set of mini-apes will do. Thanks for the compliment, but the answer is still NO. Sorry. That goes for you too, Bill...

Earlytimz, your bike looks great!! How tall are your apes?
That bridge looks like it would be a blast to ride over.
Thanks for sharing the pics. Kim :)

Post by earlytimz on 06/13/10 at 19:20:10

Thanks y'all

Kim, those are 10" mini-apes on factory "early savage" risers. They look taller since I lowered the seat way down. Very comfy!

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by kimchris1 on 06/13/10 at 19:23:56

So did you have to lenthen your cables any? And if I didn't lower the stock seat then they wouldn't be that high even right? Can you see where I am heading? hahah

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by earlytimz on 06/13/10 at 19:44:27

Nope, those are the stock cables but they are tight. You do need to re-route the clutch and throttle to make 'em work. I will probably order longer cables sometime later to make it look better.

It sounds like someone is getting bobber bit!! LoL. Watch out for the haters!!

I'm 5'9" & those bars are right at shoulder height when I'm riding. A taller seat will definitely raise you up, but I guess it just depends on how tall you are. If it's something you're really considering, they also make 8" mini-apes that may better suit you. You can avoid the tightness on the cables that way too.

Here's a couple on ebay that won't break the bank...

Hey Kim, I just remembered something... Your bike has taller risers, so you'll definitely wanna take that into consideration too...

Post by kimchris1 on 06/13/10 at 19:59:39

Bobber bit? Well looking at possiblities. Never hurts to look right? I am 5'5 .

WD told me I could now make my bike "my own".  Will I completly bob her? Nahhhh yet may make a couple changes.

I didn't mean to change the topic of your post. Forgive me and thanks again for sharing with us those beautiful pics.. :)  Kim

Post by earlytimz on 06/13/10 at 20:11:35

Hey don't apologize for keeping the post alive!

Mini-apes look good on a lot of bikes, not just bobbers. I think it's good of you to keep an open mind. Some folks around here don't appreciate that, but I do.

WD is absolutely correct, you've been given a perfect opportunity to make her your own (or is it a him?). It's like starting with a blank canvas, waiting for your interpretation of the perfect ride... Love it!

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by kimchris1 on 06/13/10 at 20:29:30

Well my bike is a "her".. I call her Genie. I will save the story behind the name for another topic.

I have always looked at different bike styles. I find it amazing what people can do with some tools and imagination.

Had I not had the accident then she would have remained stock. However I am  changing the rear turn signals.

I remember I took a bicycle many many years ago. Was a regular frame. Put what then was called a banana seat on it and what are referred to now as ape handlebars on it. Looked funky, yet maybe even back then I was looking into the future.. ;)

As far as those here that have their opinions on not bobbing nor making changes other than stock. Well their entitled to their opinions like we are to ours.
They need to remember it is an opinion and all should be respected.

We can all agree to disagree at times. Yet to constantly hound one for making changes and having a difference of opinion I feel is wrong.

So by myself speaking of making cosmetic changes to my bike makes a few unhappy, then they can just kiss my grits.... ;)

If Mick and Bill aren't ribbing you about something,... they don't like you...
I put bicycle pedals on my bike.... Perhaps not a popular choice...
A few liked, a few didn't....
I like drag bars,.. I think I caught a ribbing from you for that...
Didn't I?...
If not,... you now have a free shot.... ;D...

Speaking of ape hangers, I was looking up laws about something, can't even remember now... (yea, old age settin' in again)  but I do remember seeing that in WV, the law on handlebars is maxiumum of 15" above the seat.  Kentucky has no handlebar restriction.

Here's a nice little chart, by state:http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp

And sunblock?  Spfttt, sunblock is for babies and wusses  LOL

I never pick on any one,it's just that you allways seem to leave your self open to it.
FREEDOM huh ! in that case just jump on your bike or get in your car and go,never worry about a licence,of a helmet, heck take the brakes off the bike. Driving or riding is a privilage not a right.
you earn that right by taking tests and paying for your use of the road you share with everyone else. So go out and and scrape your foot pegs down to nubs, and your knee pucks down to the leather, have fun
I do know one thing for sure, you are only young once, godamit.

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by earlytimz on 06/14/10 at 08:52:36

You gotta calm down there buddy... I bet your blood pressure must be thru the roof! We're all here to have fun & make a little fun along the way. If I leave an opening for scrutiny, take a shot, I can handle it... But expect one in return, I can do this all day & enjoy it! LoL

Riding is a privilege, that's true, never said otherwise. Wearing a helmet is a personal choice, depending on where you ride. You posted a pic of yourself yesterday riding without a helmet. Congrats, that's what I call freedom! We don't need the govt telling us how to live if it doesn't affect other people's rights or safety.

We're only young once, and we ain't as young as we used to be! Take advantage of your privileges and enjoy them however you see fit. I know I do!!

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics

It appears we should call this room "the debate room". We cover alot of different issues. Their are times we all pretty much agree on a subject and other times, well we don't.

I feel being able to come here and share my opinions is a freedom. Now whether some or most agree or disagree is alright with me. That is what makes us all unique.

It would be a very boring world if we all thought alike as well as rode bikes that looked exactly alike and heaven forbid looked alike..

Mick, your so very right saying, "were only young once".

The saying "if I could go back to my childhood with the knowledge I now have" really rings true as you get older.

If you choose to wear gear or not including a helmet. It is your head not mine that will be injured. If you choose to wear sunblock again your skin that will possibly be burned not mine.
Again just because I may not agree with some on issues don't mean I can't agree with you on other issues.
Also my opinion is mine and yes I have a patent on it..

OOo Earlytimz I did it again.. got off topic.. Please get us back on..  :)

So anyway,...  When I ride,.. between the FF helmet, sunglasses, mustache, and goatee,... the only exposed part of my face is my huge nose...

I wore a pair of those cool driving gloves on a long ride once and ended up with bright red circles on every knuckle...
Looks ridiculous when you take them off...

Skidoo, first of all congratulations on being with your spouse that many years. It is nice that you were able to take her out for a b-day ride.
I love the old locomotive as well.

I ride with chaps every time I ride. Well almost. 3 years ago we had the bikes down in Ca. It was 104 and I went without my chaps. It sure felt weird though.
Here in Wa. State the chaps not only protect my legs yet they help keep them warm as well.

Some great pics, that bridge looks like it'd be fun.
I feel where you're coming from too, with the lack of sunblock.  Went riding with my brother when I was back on vacation last summer.  Didn't have a helmet, and none required in Wyoming, so had to try it at least once.  Also no sunscreen.  The result?  Ouch!
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Vacation%20pics/Nebraska%202009/th_IM000330.jpg (http://s626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/redneck72102/Vacation%20pics/Nebraska%202009/?action=view&current=IM000330.jpg)

Looked funny for the next couple weeks! ;D

Oh, and I've been known to wear chaps too, depending on weather, and where I'm going.  The young ladies at the bookstore give me service with a smile when I'm all leathered up! ;)

Wow John, that was some sunburn.. I have been fortunate and so far have not been burned like that while riding my bike.

It is funny how people respond to leather. Seems you may get smiles, raised eyebrows, and at times the hmmm I wonder look.. ;)

Work is about the only place I won't wear the full leather, mostly because it's a hassle to find a place to store it, and also, I'd never hear the end of the Village People jokes! ;D

I plan on going riding with my brother again when I'm back there next month.  This time I'm bringing sunscreen! ;)

Great pics and an entertaining thread. Glad we're all out enjoying the ride. Style and gear tend to change with age. Nothing worse than outliving your look! Post by earlytimz on 06/14/10 at 19:40:34

LMAO!! Hey John, I had that same look after a big ride once... Way back in the early 90's. The worst part was I had to be IN a wedding the following weekend (not my own!) I never thought I'd go to a tanning bed place, but I went every night that week and my head-line was evened out in time for the wedding... Good times!!

I know this will probably shock some folks, maybe even piss a few off...
I ride in shorts, t-shirt & ankle high boots most of the time. I wear my skid lid about 90% of the time & a hoodie when it gets below mid 60's on my way to work in the morning.
I'm a fair weather rider, any more than 30% chance of rain & I'm in the truck. Below 50* & yep, I'm in the truck.

When you live in a state that doesn't require a helmet, it's really hard to put that thing on!! Once you get the feeling of your hair blowing in the wind it almost ruins you! I make myself wear mine when I commute, but sometime I gotta let my hair down! (pun intended)

I'm waiting... LoL

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by kimchris1 on 06/14/10 at 19:49:11

I will testify that ATGATT saved my a**  and other body parts from being more seriously hurt than I was in my accident.
I stated back when it first happened how all the emergency responders as well as the deputy, gave me high 5's for being in leather as well as ff helmet.
Again had I been in any other kind than ff then my jaw would have suffered severe injury. The ff kept that from happening.

I will always wear my gear for sure now. We can debate gear vs no gear all night long and I won't change my mind on that..

I've been riding 39 years never had a motorcycle jacket just wear regular clothes like everyone else around here,My wife always wore shorts in the summer. We taught ourself how to ride so never been down don't know anyone that has. Some people play the role others enjoy the ride.

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by kimchris1 on 06/14/10 at 20:09:20

Earlytimz, you not wearing gear and helmet does not piss me off. It makes me shake my head in wonder.

Accidents happen at times from no fault of our own. Even if we had a no helmet law here in Wa. State I would still wear one. Same with my leathers and boots.
Even here in Wa. State  there are ones that ride in shorts, tennis shoes, tank tops. I shake my head at them as again I have been down. I know how it feels to hit pavement. At least I didn't have to have any skin graphs. The injuries that I sustained have been nothing compared to what I would have had with no gear.

So now you have my opinion on gear and ff helmet. I may disagree with you on this yet that is what makes us all interesting, our differences of opinions.. ;)

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by earlytimz on 06/14/10 at 20:10:59

Hey Kim, you won't get a debate from me on that! I commend you and your decision. I do wear my FF when it gets chilly & sometimes at night, but mainly for the warmth & because the bugs are friggin crazy here after dark.

Bill, (hold on to your hat) I respect your point of view & think I actually agree... I'm not into the leather chaps & the costume part of it either, I'm in it for the ride. Not gonna knock it though...

Title: Re: Just a little ride today w/ a few pics
Post by earlytimz on 06/14/10 at 20:27:44

Around here, about 40% of the bikers I see are wearing a helmet. Maybe 20% in full gear. The squids are normally better about it, or so it seems....

One thing I won't waiver on is my boots. I don't wear riding boots, just good leather lace-up style boots. Your feet are always the first thing to hit the road when something goes wrong. I've had a close call or two where I've had to put my feet down to save my butt. When I see someone in flip flops on a bike I just wanna smack 'em. One close call in those and you've got no chance of saving it...

My brother has been in NC for several years & they have a helmet law. He came to visit last summer & brought his bike so we could ride together for the first time in many years. I remember him talking smack about how he always wears his helmet & had every intention to wear it while he was here. Well, I never saw him put it on & he even admitted it was addicting... After that he was ruint for sure!

I don't make the kids wear a helmet on their bikes either. I think kids these days have become somewhat pu$$y-fied with all the helmets and knee pads and crap.
Hell, we don't even have a net on our trampoline out back... Probably get me arrested one day for neglect! LoL

Howdy Bill, my name is Kim. I went down as result of being rear ended by a 92 year old woman that ran a stop sign.
Perhaps in your 39 years of riding experience you might be able to give me some pointers on how to avoid going down, heaven forbid the situation ever happening again

I not only wear gear for protection yet as for warmth as well. I get chilled very easily. I have been in situations where I didn't have on enough layers even. That is a very uncomfortable feeling.
You evidentually have a higher body heat than I do.  :)

I rode for quiet a few years with my wife riding her bike behind me,So I am use to looking in my rear view mirrors,When there is some one behind me I keep a close watch on them,As for as cold I don't ride less than 60 degrees,I don't like riding when its cold,Most the time I have a shirt and blue jeans,I always wore cowboy boots,And my wife did because we were short,But with the lower seat height I wear tennis shoes.I have always had a big windshield which keeps you warmer.

Hey, if I can laugh at my own misfortune, why not give everyone else the opportunity too? ;D  And yeah, I pretty much kept my cap on most of the time for the next week or so.

As for gear, I always wear some kinda heavy boots, mostly steel toed (get 'em almost free through work!); jeans, sometimes with chaps, sometimes even ski pants, depending on the weather; almost always a jacket of some kind, leather, textile, or mesh, unless it gets over 100° and I'm doing all city riding; and almost always a helmet (OR and WA are helmet states), FF most of the time, 1/2 once in a while.

Kimmy, don't disown me, cause I always wear my boots, and jeans, (chaps if its below 55°) but I do ride in T-shirts quite often.  No gloves, unless its really cold.  I wouldn't dream of riding in flip-flops, and most likely not in tennis shoes, but that's mostly cause I don't like wearing tennis shoes anyway.
Helmet - well, when I was in Kentucky, I did ride through the campground without my helmet, but otherwise, I wore it.  I'm still skeered to ride without one.  But maybe next time I get across the border, I'll try it, just to see what it feels like.

If I see full gear around here, they are on a squid, or possibly a full dresser, but alot of them wear t-shirts and shorts too.  And I've seen girls on the back of a squid in next to nothing.... thinkin' they must be friggin nuts!

Oh, and speedo's are definitely OUT!  Please guys, if any of you own one (or god forbid, more than one), THROW THEM AWAY!

AJ, I can tell the difference in a man wearing chaps... its all in the walk.    ;)

Nice sunburn John!  And nice of us to let us rib you!  My shoulders got pink a couple weekends ago, and now they are peeling.  I usually don't peel and don't mind to get a little pink, but I hate the peeling part.  I bet your nose looked nice when it peeled....

Piglet, you know I love ya gal. If you feel comfortable not being in full gear, then good for you.
Again I feel safer in gear and yes I am confident in my riding abilities. However I am not comfortable in others ability to drive safely.

Was I this strong concerning gearing up before the accident? Hell ya or else I would not have been all geared up that beautiful sunny day.

I wish safe riding to all of us. I enjoy reading your posts of current activites your able to do example, the scavenger hunt.

O and we have beautiful scenery that crosses rivers as well as 2 volcano's that offer breath taking views on the way up to them.

Hey Earlytimz, see I got back on topic. Just took awhile to do so.. ;)

We are going camping this weekend.  Will ride if the weather holds out well enough.  I'll take some pics!  There is a cool little Indian fort there.

Yeah, I peeled like a snake for a while after that. ;D  It's one of the hazards of working nights, I'm just not used to being in the sun all that much.  Lessens my risk of skin cancer I guess. :-/

And I'm not gonna be caught dead in a Speedo!  Heck, I don't go out in public in any kind of shorts, partially due to the above mentioned pasty-ness. ;D

Oh, and the one piece of gear I forgot to mention is gloves.  Even if I'm riding in a t-shirt, I'm still wearing gloves.  I like all of my digits right where they are, thank you very much! :D
