Title: Route 66 Articles Post by Southpaw on 07/08/10 at 09:23:49 Rainy day in Missouri, found a few Route 66 articles to share while I'm waiting to get back outside. Might be good for a couple of day trips! St. Louis Post Dispatch's "Explore Missouri" article from 7/4/10 with links to the Great River Project http://www.stltoday.com/travel/article_f6237413-92fe-591b-bfc0-c3ed83059507.html More links in newspaper that didn't show up on website: http://theroadwanderer.net/ http://mostateparks.com/route66.htm http://transportmuseumassociation.org/plan.html http://www.americascave.com/ http://joplinmuseum.org/ http://www.redoakiimissouri.com/ Ride safe Dan |
Title: Re: Route 66 Articles Post by WebsterMark on 07/08/10 at 11:07:52 Greetings fellow Show-Me rider. I saw that article also. Another good ride in Missouri is a visit to the numerous winery's in Missouri. Hwy 94 is a good start but its a haven for crotch rockets. Came upon the remains of one Sunday. Ambulance screaming by, fire trucks, damaged bike on the side of the road, a single helmet in the tall grass and a cop writting a ticket to the downed riders buddy. |
Title: Re: Route 66 Articles Post by Wolfman on 07/08/10 at 13:58:54 If you get down around Lake of the Ozarks check out Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Do the tour around the castle and walk down around the spring and cave. Lot of nice scenry and some GOOD roads if you like the curves...lol Im kinda curious about how many Savage riders we have here in MO. We seem kinda savage poor, although i see a LOT of s40's(ls650's as well) for sale on craigslist recently. Yet to see another out rideing though. |

There's a couple around the Franklin County Area I see on a regular basis. On this site I've talked to Dr Harveys, Bravo12, Webstermark and Marine5317. I'm sure I missed someone else along the way. We're kind of scattered all over the place! As far as the winery circuit, its the twisties on the river road and the tourist traps that attract them. The further away from St. Louis you get, the fewer attitude squid you run into. I can run 94 on a weekday and not see two bikes from Francis Howell to Dutzow. Weekends are another story! Just an example, but you can run a big square from Hwy 94 west to Hwy 19 south to Hwy 8 east to Hwy 47 north and find lots of nice roads without a ton of "tourist traffic" to get in your way. Lots of good places to eat and stop, just a different type of travelers down that way. Meremac State park area has a lot of nice roads! (Gotta watch the boat trailers and rafters at the end of the day though, still too many heavy drinkers on the rivers down south!) |
Title: Re: Route 66 Articles Post by 12Bravo on 07/08/10 at 20:38:31 I prefer riding 94 from 47 west to 19 or even to Jeff City. You get less traffic that way. Hwy 100 is a pretty ride also heading west from Washington. There some nice roads in southern Montgomery and Calloway counties. Sometimes I make a loop starting on 19 and will take either 94 or 100 then cross over at Washington and then come back. |
Title: Re: Route 66 Articles Post by Wolfman on 07/09/10 at 03:34:55 I've got a nice chunk of route 66 on my doorstep here in sw mo. Go about 25 miles either way for a short run. My long loop takes in a good 10-15 miles on route 66 then another 40 or so on the backroads with some nice tight curves and low traffic. Some old stores and motels still standing on the route 66 part. I remember when it was still a major road and I44 was still a fairly new highway. Southpaw, not sure who labled you a flatlander but it must of been before you hit MO. I love these ozark mountains...untill i have to walk up one...lol |
Title: Re: Route 66 Articles Post by WebsterMark on 07/09/10 at 04:51:41 I'm glad I'm not alone! I've done the 94 - 47 - 21 circle a few times. Back to route 66, I've been at the beginning in Chicago and the end in California and many places in between but would like to do the whole thing one time. Not sure my S40 is the right bike for that however. On vacation last year we stopped at a little place for lunch in Needles, CA which is the perfect stop over for bikes making the long trip across route 66. |
