Title: Colorado -- so much to do, so little time! Post by drharveys on 08/21/10 at 13:36:07 Mrs. Doc and I spent the first week of August in Colorado. Not wanting to subject my long-suffering wife to a summer ride across Kansas, we trailered the Bonnie: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO000.jpg Arthur Bryant's is right off I-70, so a barbeque stop was required: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO002.jpg We also broke up the trip with a stop at Mamie & Ike's in Abilene: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO004.jpg And, thanks to the wonders of cell phones and GPS, we met some Denver friends for breakfast and got in a shopping run while Marsha's flight was delayed. (Marsha??? Our daughter's new aunt by marriage...) Much of the week was occupied by such things as the Vail music and dance festival, some superb restaurants and more than a few bison burgers, but I was able to get in a full day with the Triumph: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO031.jpg Cross this bridge to take Tennessee Pass to Leadville: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO030.jpg Leadville is at 10,250 feet elevation. It dates back to the mining days, and there's some great architecture, such as this wooden church http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO032.jpg and a recently restored synagogue across the street (5 points -- it had been originally built a a synagogue, later decommissioned and used as apartments.) http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO033.jpg There's also an old road from the stage coach days linking Leadville to Denver by way of Alma, Mosquito Pass Road. At just over 13,000 feet, it's the highest pass with a road across it in the U.S. Since I've done my share of cow-trailing, I gave it a try. This road, along with Mrs. Doc preferring to pillion on the Triumph, is why I left the Suzuki at home. Even the modest forward positioning of the pegs on the Savage seemed unsuitable for anything off-road. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO040.jpg Not a street bike friendly road: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO044.jpg Here's where I met some guys on ATVs coming the other way. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO041.jpg Following some discussion, I decided that it would be, uhh, prudent, to turn back before I damaged either the bike or myself. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO045.jpg Back in Leadville, I consoled myself with a visit to the Tennessee Pass Cafe and a nice Thai style chicken and shrimp dish. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO048.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO047.jpg With a full tummy and undamaged bike, I headed back to Avon by way of Fremont Pass, where I rode into some hail, Copper Mountain and Vail Pass. Had a great day, and still made it back in time for Eugenia Zuckerman performing a Bach concerto on flute and a baroque ensemble playing all four of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Later, there were zip lines, white water rafting, hiking and more performing arts. Oh yeah, Mrs Doc and I went over Mosquito Pass a few days later in the Xterra. It wasn't bad with 4 wheel drive in compound low! http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO165.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO171.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO172.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO178a.jpg |
Title: Re: Colorado -- so much to do, so little time! Post by gerald.hughes on 08/21/10 at 14:32:57 My God. Yours looks just like my creamsickle T-Bird sport that I had when I moved to Tucson. The best engine that I ever had on a bike, and not bad suspension. Unfortunately, I am vertically challenged (26" inseam), and even with a modified dog leg and low profile tires, I was way up on my tip toes. In Tucson traffic, I knew that meant disaster, so I reluctantly sold the bike. Don't get me wrong, I love the Savage (have put over 20 K on it in the last year and never been farther than 100 miles from Tucson), but every once in a while, I pine for the T-Bird. Glad that somewhere, someone is still able to enjoy one. Oh yea, nice pics too. Thanks for sharing. |

Title: Re: Colorado -- so much to do, so little time! Post by kimchris1 on 08/22/10 at 04:51:48 Great pics and I loved the bridge. That looks like it would have been awesome to ride across. Equally nice you were able to grab the once synagague now apt and get points for the scavenger hunt. That road definetly biker unfriendly in my opinion as well. Thanks for sharing this adventure that you and Mrs. Doc had..It appears you had a great time and nice pics of your bike as well.. :) kim |

Yup, the more I see of it, the more I like it! Here's a few of the non-motorcycle photos: Mrs. Doc meets a bear in Vail: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO017.jpg Vail is also good for just walking around in: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO021.jpg Zip lines -- Mrs. Doc in harness: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO055.jpg Me on the practice lines: (That's a fishing cap under the helmet -- brim in front, neck shade in back and it has a clip to keep it attached to your shirt if it blows off.) http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO063.jpg And she's off! (I did it too, but had the camera) http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO083.jpg Subtle transition shot to rafting: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO067.jpg Us on the raft: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO105.jpg Historic spring fed "hot tub" at Glenwood Springs: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO108.jpg High elevation lily near the top of the Vail gondola: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO130.jpg More hiking photos: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO145.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO146.jpg I got this neat hat with the money we saved buying our tickets at the box office. We dodged a $4 PER TICKET "handling fee", and got to visit the Betty Ford Alpine Garden next to the box office. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO132.jpg Historic mansion in Abilene Kansas (we stopped on the way home, too): http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO183.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO184.jpg This one's a restaurant -- a good one! http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO006.jpg OK, that's enough already -- I guess I've convinced myself there's enough to do in a ski area in the summer! ;D |

I drive through it every year to get to New Mexico and I almost never get to check out all the cool stuff. One of these times though I will have more time to enjoy it all. Thank you for sharing those awesome pictures! |

Next time I'm out there, I'll let you know! A meetup would be good, plus a little local knowledge on some twisties would be appreciated. ;) My mapping program says this would take about 6 1/2 hours: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Bike%20Sushi/ColoRoute.gif and only 2 1/4 to get back on I-70 |
