Title: Colorado -- so much to do, so little time! Post by drharveys on 08/21/10 at 13:36:07 Mrs. Doc and I spent the first week of August in Colorado. Not wanting to subject my long-suffering wife to a summer ride across Kansas, we trailered the Bonnie: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO000.jpg Arthur Bryant's is right off I-70, so a barbeque stop was required: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO002.jpg We also broke up the trip with a stop at Mamie & Ike's in Abilene: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO004.jpg And, thanks to the wonders of cell phones and GPS, we met some Denver friends for breakfast and got in a shopping run while Marsha's flight was delayed. (Marsha??? Our daughter's new aunt by marriage...) Much of the week was occupied by such things as the Vail music and dance festival, some superb restaurants and more than a few bison burgers,but I was able to get in a full day with the Triumph: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO031.jpg Cross this bridge to take Tennessee Pass to Leadville: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO030.jpg Leadville is at 10,250 feet elevation. It dates back to the mining days, and there's some great architecture, such as this wooden church http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO032.jpg and a recently restored synagogue across the street (5 points -- it had been originally built a a synagogue, later decommissioned and used as apartments.) http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e204/drharveys/Colorado%20Vacation%20Summer%202010/CO033.jpg There's also an old road from the stage coach days linking Leadville to Denver by way of Alma, Mosquito Pass Road. At just over 13,000 feet, it's the highest pass with a road across it in the U.S. Since I've done my share of cow-trailing, I gave it a try. This road, along with Mrs. Doc preferring to pillion on the Triumph, is why I left the Suzuki at home. Had a great day, and still made it back in time for Eugenia Zuckerman performing a Bach concerto on flute and a baroque ensemble playing all four of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Later, there were zip lines, white water rafting, hiking and more performing arts. Oh yeah, Mrs Doc and I went over Mosquito Pass a few days later in the Xterra. The best engine that I ever had on a bike, and not bad suspension. Unfortunately, I am vertically challenged (26" inseam), and even with a modified dog leg and low profile tires, I was way up on my tip toes. In Tucson traffic, I knew that meant disaster, so I reluctantly sold the bike. Don't get me wrong, I love the Savage (have put over 20 K on it in the last year and never been farther than 100 miles from Tucson), but every once in a while, I pine for the T-Bird. Glad that somewhere, someone is still able to enjoy one. Oh yea, nice pics too. Thanks for sharing. |

Equally nice you were able to grab the once synagague now apt and get points for the scavenger hunt. That road definetly biker unfriendly in my opinion as well. Thanks for sharing this adventure that you and Mrs. Doc had..It appears you had a great time and nice pics of your bike as well.. :) kim |

Post by thumperclone on 08/23/10 at 18:32:48 your southern route high lited in green is a MUCH better bike/senic less touristry path... we have a fold out couch that is always available to visitors(sorry only 1 bedroom)..fresh home grown eggs,veggies and peaches in season or canned later in the year...(cept the eggs! never tried to can them lol) as your next trip get closer pm me and can help you and yours with ideas...may drag the pop up camper and meet up round gunnison, fresh trout for suppper and a free bed there also.. me and misses are pretty easy goin with enuff fore plannig wifey can schedule her appts as she is self employed... this invite is open to all(even MICK) who dare to venture to the west slope... T.C.& wifey& 2 dogs and 4 hens and... |
