Post by mick on 09/01/10 at 01:08:13 With scientific data piling up showing that the world has reached its hottest-ever point in recorded history, global-warming skeptics are facing a high-profile defection from their ranks. Bjorn Lomborg, author of the influential tract "The Skeptical Environmentalist," has reversed course on the urgency of global warming, and is now calling for action on "a challenge humanity must confront." Lomborg, a Danish academic, had previously downplayed the risk of acute climate change. A former member of Greenpeace, he was a vocal critic of the Kyoto Protocol -- a global U.N. treaty to cut carbon emissions that the United States refused to ratify -- as well as numerous other environmental causes. "The Skeptical Environmentalist," published in 2001, argued that many key preoccupations of the environmental movement, including pollution control and biodiversity, were either overblown as threats or amenable to relatively simple technological fixes. Lomborg argued that the governments spending billions to curb carbon emissions would be better off diverting those resources to initiatives such as AIDS research, anti-malaria programs and other kinds of humanitarian aid. Lomborg's essential argument was: Yes, global warming is real and human behavior is the main reason for it, but the world has far more important things to worry about. Oh, how times have changed. In a book to be published this year, Lomborg calls global warming "undoubtedly one of the chief concerns facing the world today" and calls for the world's governments to invest tens of billions of dollars annually to fight climate change. |

We are approaching a solar max, in 2012. Weve just been thru a solar minimum in the last few years. Thats why the GWscam fell thru. ARE we impacting the climate? Sure, we gotta be, but the SUN is the main driver of our climate & our ability to swing it one way or the other seems to be a lot less than what the fear mongers would have us believe. PLease. When I was in school I learned that about 12000 BC the last Ice Age ended ith a global warming tha sowly melted the big glaciers... (and when I say big, I mean BIG, as in "those that cvered N.America all the way down to Kansas, and Europe all the way down to halfway dow Germany...) It got so warm, many species were exterminated: no more giant sloths, woolly mammooths or saber-toothed tigers, no more Neaanderthal Man and no more...whatever I haven't listed. Ask Al Gore what started that global warming, he'll shrug and blame it on sun spots or whatever. The truth is, we are now nearing the apex of that global warming period, which started in 12000 BC. Only, we've been keeping records of local temperatures only since... 150 yars ago? Anything older, you'll have to ask a paleometereologist or similar scientist. So, yes, man-made pollution does contribute to global warming, more or less as much as dumping you warm cola into a pond. All the pollution caused by industry cannot compete with the amount of heat that reaches your bedroom window every day at sunup. Get the picture ? So relax, ride that bicycle to Walmart's and do some exercise, but don't expect anybody's 1000-story hirise office building to switch off the lights and airconditioning from 5 to 9 the next day, cause it ain't gonna happen. 8-) |

Or some superbug like the spanish flu or eboli dont get us. Lets not forget we just might nuke ourselves to death before any of that. Or get hit by a cage tomorrow. ;D For Humanity to give itself a chance at a nice long reign we have to expand...to the stars. The moon, mars and elsewhere. We keep all of us sitting here on this lil ball of rock we are eventualy going to go the way of the T-Rex, thats a given. Survival means expansion, not keeping all or eggs in one basket so to speak. We're supposed to average an ELE asteroid or comet stirke every 650 million years or so. Supposedly we're about a 100 million years overdue. On that note if you remember we've had TWO asteroid more then 5 kiliometers acorss fly by us within the moons orbit in the last 15 years. That we have seen OR been told about. If you remember the first one about 15 years or so back, they did'nt MENTION it to the public untill AFTER it had passed because they did'nt know if it was going to hit us or not as close as it was to come to us. Global warming is a cycle. We are'nt going to stop it, it comes and goes. Carbon taxes are'nt going to help. Reduceing carbon emissions is the only thing that will. He!!, al gore buys LOTS of carbon taxes then runs more juice through his house then some buisnesses. WE did'nt cause global warming, we just helped accellerate it. Possibly make it a lil worse. Myself im a lil more worried abut the ozone layer reduction which IS a real threat. Its already causeing the reduction and possible extinction of some speceis such as frogs, toads ect. Folks in australia and the southern pole already are feeling the effects. Ever notice skin cancer is on the rise? How much easier you burn then when you were a kid? :( |

The garden is strong. The temperature has been in the 90's every day this past week. Every full moon at the end of August the temp would run 28-32 for 3-4 days. It was the start of cold weather, cleaning the garden out. Now I wait until October to do that. - Global warming -it is here. We argue over what is to blame- but we can still do something about it. The hot weather sucks. I didn't move to Maine for the heat. |

Well, I havent froze to death nor starved. Maby the planet is warming, from what I understand it won't be the first time. Change is the only constant. The earths climate is and always has been changing; up & down; hotter & cooler; and it will continue until the end of the world. BUT MICK, DO YOU REALLY THINK THERE IS ANYTHING THAN MANKIND CAN DO TO CHANGE ANY OF THAT BY ONE IOTA ? DO YOU REALLY THINK WE CAN CHANGE THE CLIMATE ? DO YOU REALLY THINK WE HAVE THAT KIND OF POWER ? If you do, then the next time a tornado or hurricane or earthquake or volcanic eruption begins to happen then just run out there and STOP IT ! It's very true that the earth has it's ups and downs ,but the ozone layer was never as thin as it is right now,more people are coming down with skin cancer than ever before,so please don't just give up and say there is nothing we can do ,because you know that's bullsh1t. |

It's like the atheist thing ,you pray to a non existing god.That real smart people don't believe in And interlectuals believe in global warming.
