Title: Agggg,, My shifter? cable broke!!
Post by FrankYoungWolf on 09/08/10 at 16:08:58

Ok so as I was pulling into my work parking lot this morning I noticed that I could just wiggle my shifter looking under the bike I noticed that the cable had simply snapped in two. Now I need to know how easy this is to fix and how costly. As money is tight right now I may be parking the ole War pony for a bit till I can afford to have it fixed.. Sux cause Riding weather here in Fl. is getting to be perfect right now!! Thanx guys. :-[

Cable? My old Vespa had shift cables, but the Savage/S40 has a rod. Remove the broken rod, have it welded or brazed back together, and reinstall it. Or just buy a new one for a relatively few dollars.

Were you able to ride it home?

I am assuming the rod also, but maybe you can post a pic of what's broken, somebody probably has a spare...

if it is the rod that broke it will cost about 8 dollars for the part and should be around 30 bucks for someone to fix it at a garage. I bent mine this week and have to do the same thing. replace it.

On the same topic, How much free play do you all have at the clutch lever? In Clymers it says there needs to be 3mm, but how do you measure that.

If anyone could measure the distance from the locknut to the turn adjuster at the clutch lever, and add the distance from the locknut to adjuster at the crankcase cover that would help.

My shift rod broke just as I pulled into work one day. I put it in 3rd by using what was left hanging from the trans. Rode 26 miles across Memphis home in just 3rd gear. Bike has a lot of torque!! I weighed 325 lbs in those days. The rod is an easy change. It is threaded opposite directions on each end. Just get it started on each end and adjust it to get the height you need on the shift lever. tighten the lock nuts down and you are ready to roll. Good luck!

It might not be broken. The rod may have come unscrewed.
Be advised that it has a left hand thread on one end and a right hand thread on the other. Be sure to tighten the lock nuts when you are done adjusting it.

It's just the cable itself that broke in two. I can look and it looks as if I took scissors and cut it in two. :-[ Will try and post a pic of it later.

Still looking for a part for the bike. Will have to go by dealer tomm. to get cost of repair I guess. Not real sure but saw someone say it could be wielded? Will that really work?

It cost 5.66$ at a place near me and would take you 20 to 30 mins to replace it. Couple of wrenches and you are done.

And special, jest fer a newbie we will mention the carefully kept secret -- the one in the front is a left handed thread and a left handed nut.

Thought I'd mention it ahead of time so you can feel really really silly when you bust it off trying to do righty tighty lefty loosey to it ....

You can do this thing. Don't let no wimpy shiftless? rod mess with you. Please note that I keep a trusted motorcycle mechanic near by.

Id bet that if I had a metal rod & some baling wire & pliers I could get one home IF it was busted out in the middle like yours. I wouldnt just weld it, Id splint it & weld it. Just a couple inches of steel rod layin across the break & some welding & that thing otta stay with ya.

Ok so with a knot in my stomach and some serious trepidation I figured I would try and fix this thing this weekend. I'm going to go and see if a local dealer has the part here in Ocala and I have the new EVO phone from sprint so I'll video it and post for your amusement..LOL ;D

mine just snapped on the way home. is the rod on just a threaded rod? could I just buy a piece from Home Depot, cut and replace?

yes and no,   it's got left and right hand threads.  So if you have a left hand 6mm thread die you could make your own using a piece of rod,  otherwise you will need to either buy a new one or take a piece of tube and put over the broken section and weld it on.
