Title: $1500 fine Post by mick on 10/05/10 at 14:15:14 My Nephew who lives in Sublimity OR was arrested and sent back home after agreeing to pay a $1500 fine for copying a movie. The Hurt Locker,to be exact. I bet he won't do that again. Guess who will have to pay it.his Mom,who else. little sh1t I'd like to smack him upside the head with a 2+4. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by SimonTuffGuy on 10/05/10 at 15:53:45 Copying a movie? Care to explain on that further? |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by verslagen1 on 10/05/10 at 16:13:24 Yes, how old is he? where did he copy it from (internet or what)? How'd he get caught? I worry about this, I try to keep the kids legal and don't allow sharing software on my computers. But I know people with thousands of music titles. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by Trippah on 10/05/10 at 16:18:09 Most appropriate movie (given the title). After downloading a copy of our Savage haynes manual, I got to thinking about it and went out and bought a copy. It is sooo easy to slip. :P |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by LostArtist on 10/05/10 at 16:40:55 I heard the makers of The Hurt Locker were suing people over that. if a creator of something puts something out for free that's their choice. but people need to pay for some content, or we are going to have ad sponsored everything. it's so easy to steal something when it's only digital right? on the other side, people want things in digital format, and the creators aren't providing it in good formats, maybe licensing it for downloads allowing people to buy it with 3 licenses with it, one for your desktop and one for your laptop and one for a mobile device maybe, as a creator, I'd like to be paid for what I create, and this kinda stuff scares me a little. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by buttgoat1 on 10/05/10 at 17:05:49 well, that is stealing so I guess that is the price to pay. Too bad he isn't an illegal immigrant, then he wouldnt have to leave, and get some nice parting gifts to go back home. |

his mother and father are both American. And do you really think they would deport someone for stealing a movie ? they don't deport for stealing medical help or the price of having a baby, this is Oregon not Arizona or Texas thank god. |

what's to explain ? he downloaded a movie before it was released to the general public, some outfit in russia lets you download from there the Makers of film watch the russian outfit and who is downloading by there IP address, first they send you a nastygram, telling you what the fine will be ,I guess my nephew is only 17 so they gave him a break, at $1500 ,the fines went up last week the minimum is now $2500 or more. So I hope all you thieves are not christians . Personally I'm an athiest and I don't steal, wierd uh ? |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by Serowbot on 10/05/10 at 18:22:50 ... and "Hurt Locker" wasn't even that good of a movie.... "Best Picture" my butt!... :-?... It was a pretty lame year for movies all 'round... ... and nominating "Dances with Smurfs" (Avatar) was a travesty too... Has James Cameron ever had an original thought?... Did he pay for stealing that intellectual property?... Paint the Indians blue in "Dances with Wolves" and you can't tell those movies apart!... Whew!.... Glad I got that off my chest!.... :-?... |

Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by mick on 10/05/10 at 22:33:56 a little more info if you need it,the russion outfit (we are not 100 % that the outfit is russian, anyway the name of the outfit is . " BIT TORRENT" see anything at all like that ,run . good luck, Sorry about the religious reflection in my last post,I must remember to keep it up in "you must be this tall". Serowbot,I liked that movie the Hurt Locker, I remember to borrow it from my nephew. I think I liked it because I was smoking by proxy, boy he was taking those long deep drags that I used to enjoy. Sh1t I just remembered I have to see my lung doctor in the morning,I hope smoking by proxy doesn't show. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by 23Skidoo on 10/06/10 at 01:31:15 WOW 1500 bucks... Did he have to go to court? I assume his name does not appear on the internet providers bill how come his parents did not take the wrap? I thought this was quite hard to prove as you could claim that someone has tapped into your wireless connection and downloaded using your ip. Not that I know anything about state laws. I'm too lazy to be bothered to download stuff.. and I consider myself Pagan... lol the Lazy Religion...? Get him to learn about using proxy ip addresses... ;) |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by LostArtist on 10/06/10 at 07:34:35 Bit Torrent is another kind of protocol that can be used through the internet. like you have http, and ftp = file transfer protocol, email, voip = voice over internet protocol, etc. . . I'm sure there are russian Bit Torrents but it's not exclusive to russia. it's a file sharing protocol that is mis-used a lot for this kinda stuff. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by Yonuh Adisi on 10/06/10 at 11:33:27 He got off lucky when every warning on a DVD just before the movie begins informs that the fine can be up to 250,000 grand and imprisonment. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by Serowbot on 10/06/10 at 12:00:56 I'd make them take me to court... How do you know that you're not being shaken down by the Russian bit-torrent, otherwise... Plus,.. it'll cost them more than $1500.00 to take you to court... Just say you can't be sure otherwise... You can't trust that it's not a fraudulent claim over the net, phone, or mail... Maybe Jerry E. can advise?... :-?... |

Jerry cant help , not his forte. Only deals with aircraft. No Pro Bono either. My niece did see a lawyer a 10 minute free consultation, he has handled this type of thing before, he advised her to pay the 1500. he said if it does go to court they have his IP address and can prove it,and it gets very spendy with a chance of jail. If I was going to copy a movie I would rent the movie copy it and take it back, no harm no foul. The thing is his mom has warned him several times. He has $5000 in savings ,for every buck he saved my sister would match it,he was going to get it on his 18th B/day next month.shame realy,he had big plans for that money, perhaps he can buy some movies with the change. |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by bill67 on 10/06/10 at 14:51:04 Is a aircraft lawyer,One of those fly by night lawyer ;) |

Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by 23Skidoo on 10/06/10 at 15:33:38 If the little bugger has been warned already then perhaps this will be a lesson learnt. I'm curious though.. Is this sort of fine common in the States and who is issuing them..? They may have an ip address but how do they know it was your nephrew that downloaded it and not a neighbour hacking into an unsecure wireless router? Of course PC equipment would have to be taken for investigation.. no..? We have all been young once Mick and I'm certain we've done a million silly things... :) Let it be a lesson.. all be it a costly one.. Andy |

They can't prove anything... ... and you might want to delete the movie off the hard drive, but they won't check anyway,... I bet they wouldn't even take it to court... They'd loose... |
Title: Re: $1500 fine Post by 23Skidoo on 10/06/10 at 15:49:06 As a note.. Last week in the UK a list has been leaked from a legal firm listing not only the IP address but name and post code of people downloading mainly porn and music via torrent sites on the Murdoch internet provider... The list has been posted all over the internet and we've all had a laugh to see who and what our neighbours have been downloading.. We are one weird bunch in the UK..... ;D Or as we prefer.. Eccentric.... :) But goes to show big brother is watching... |
